I only have the 2e rulebook and Anarchy. I don't recall these two player types in the 2050s, but maybe I'm mistaken. Did they appear in later editions? Was there a specific event that brought them about?

Adepts have been around since 1E but were called Physical Adepts back then and have evolved to be more than just a magic street sam is all.

Technomancers are the evolution of the Otaku and became a thing in 4E if I'm recalling correctly. Otaku were a late 2E addition I think, but it might have been 3E.

The 1e Virtual Realities matrix sourcebook first hinted at Otaku.  But iirc they didn't become a thing with rules until Deus and the Arcology Shutdown event.  So, 3e?

Technomancers came about in 4e, and in-universe I want to say they're evolved so to speak from Deus' Otaku.
RPG mechanics exist to give structure and consistency to the game world, true, but at the end of the day, you’re fighting dragons with algebra and random number generators.

sounds of pages being riffled

Otaku were introduced in 2e: first in the Denver book as a mysterious faction (yes, this surprised me too, I had totally forgotten), then with full rules in Virtual Realities 2.0. (For people who don't know, they were deck-less deckers; use all the same game mechanics as deckers but had no physical deck. They're totally distinct from Technomancers in that way.) Technomancers, I believe, were first seen in a 3e splat; I don't have any 3e books beyond the CRB and Renraku Arcology Shutdown so I'm not sure where.

Beyond physads: SR2e CRB had shamanic adepts, who could cast spells or conjure spirits associated with their totem. Also magical adepts, who could only use one magical skill (Sorcery or Conjuring.) The 2e splat The Grimoire introduced elemental adepts, who could summon one type of elemental and use spells associated with that element. Awakenings: New Magic In 2057 introduces the concept of "physical magicians" (what we would now call mystic adepts), but it only teases the concept, no rules are provided.

There was an adept variant that got the astral side sensitive adept something like that. They could bond foci.
