this is the back story and concepts for my new character. my last one died so im making a new one to fill in the same role as before (investigator). please tell me what you think.
Character: Inspector Gadget
Background Concepts:
1) Inspector Gadget is an oddball, who spends all waking hours searching for missing persons, hunting down people on the run, finding stolen gems, art, artifacts, weapons, etc, and working on his cases in any other manner they require.
2) Inspector Gadget is more machine than man. Having gone through so much body augmentation and surgery adding the most complex cyberware to his body has left him more than half crazy with an almost ignorance to danger and the threat of death.
3) Gadget is in the employment of a major corporation who financed the expensive and risky surgeries. Nobody can say for sure why he agreed in the first place to undergo the transformation from man to human Swiss army knife but whatever the reason is he either no longer recalls or does not have any desire to recount the reasons due to his altered mental state.
4) Gadget is one of the best Investigators to ever hold the title. Every case he has ever been given he has completed. All except one, an international evil villain known as Dr Claw who runs a secret evil corporation known as MAD and specializes in stealing important, rare and valuable items to sell on the black market and fund his research and development of weapons of mass destruction.
5) Gadget was never married and due to his habits and half sane mental state has no interest in a compassionate relationship. The closest people to him were his niece and her dog. Gadgets sister and her husband died in a car accident when his niece Penny was just an infant. At the time Gadget was undergoing his recovery time from his final surgery and was the only relative left to care for her. Despite having no contact with his sister or her husband for the past nine years due to his seemingly reckless choice to except the corporations offer to undergo these dangerous and mad augmentations to his body (and as a side effect mental state), he was left with guardianship for his baby niece upon their death..
6) Several years ago while in Egypt on the trail of Dr Claw Gadget was captured along with penny and her dog brain by several MAD agents. They were brought before Dr Claw and Gadget attempted a risky and daring escape. Due to his lack of ability to recognize danger and the possibility of death being high he did not foresee the danger he put Penny and Brain in with this reckless escape attempt. They escaped from Dr Claw and his MAD agents but in the process Penny was mortally injured from a lazar weapon. By the time Gadget was able to get her to a street doctor she had passed away. Inspector Gadget and Brain were left in grieving for many months. Gadget shut himself in his home and refused to eat, sleep, or answer any calls made to him. But now he has returned to his investigative work ten-fold. Half crazed he seeks vengeance and he now searches ceaselessly to find and destroy Dr Claw and MAD.
7) The corporation Gadget works for deals in weapons research, cyberware construction and design, solder training, and other related things. They have large contracts with various military groups but their largest contract by far is with lone star police whom they are developing better weapons for, and working on creating safer fighting methods (armor, training, etc). In addition they hire on investigators (such as gadget) to aid the police in fighting crime and solving dangerous and difficult cases. These investigators are a small branch of the corporation but are highly sought after and “rented out” to police for a high price. The corporation has started delving further into drone construction and cyberware creation and development in the past decade and hopes to make this become their biggest cash crop yet (that is if they can find men to for their cyberware test surgeries. To this date Gadget is the only successful attempt at the new cyberware they are developing).
Character Goals
1) Find and destroy Dr Claw, and stop his evil plans.
2) Use Gadgets amazing investigative skills efficiently and use his gadgets/cyberware to keep him from being killed on his exploits.
Secrets About The Character
1) The human part of him and part of his mind that is still sane feel responsible for the death of his niece Penny. He secretly fears succeeding in killing Dr Claw because if he does the only person left to be held responsible is himself. Despite this he will still do anything and everything to catch Dr Claw. He keeps these thoughts buried deep within himself, almost unaware of them.
2) Unbeknownst to Inspector Gadget Dr Claw now has MAD agents inside the corporation Gadget works for. Dr Claw has had enough of Gadget ruining his plans and is slowly infiltrating and taking over the Corporation from the inside.
3) From the outward appearance most people meeting Gadget would only see him as a hunched over man in a long grey trench coat and hat. He appears to be someone with an air of ignorance but of high intellect and deductive reasoning. He almost comes off as mentally unstable at times. What people meeting Gadget don’t know is that he has undergone the most intense and expensive cyberware augmentation and surgery that has ever been attempted on a human and survived. None of it is visible to the naked eye except for when he uses one of his “gadgets” as he calls them.
People Tied to the Character
1) Quimby is Gadgets contact and ranking officer in the corporation he works for. Quimby does find it tedious working with Gadget but trusts him and knows how good he is at what he does. Quimby is loyal to Gadget and would not betray him to anyone.
2) Brain is Gadgets deceased niece Penny’s dog. Brain appears to be of very high intellect for a dog although gadget seems not to have ever noticed this. Brain can understand human speech and has become adept at walking on two legs when need be. He also has managed to learn to use his front paws as hands and use equipment and handle other items in the same manner you or I would. Brain attempts to communicate with people but is only understood if someone is concentrating on trying to understand him. When he “speaks” he barks normally as a dog would but his barks sound vaguely familiar like words being covered up with dog sounds. Because of brains high intellect he can care for himself without much help, a good thing seeing as how Gadget doesn’t seem to notice that as a dog he would normally need to be fed and walked.
3) Alabaster is an occult investigator. He has met and had dealings with Gadget on several occasions but knows him more for his record and skills in crime solving and related dealings. Alabaster often finds investigators for hire for corporations and other people needing their services.
Memories, Mannerisms, and Quirks
1) Whether Gadgets remembers his former life before the surgeries is uncertain. Those close to him (which is very few. Quimby for example who still only occasionally see’s him) believe he knows who he used to be but has lost most memories of his former life. Only remembering who he was, not what he did or what he enjoyed in life. It is suspected that his only true memories from before his alterations and the side effects they had on his sanity are those of his early days as an investigator and any events leading up to the corporation making him (with his consent) their Guiney pig. Weather he remembers for what reason he gave consent to undergo the dangerous cyberware installations over nine year process is uncertain. Perhaps the memory is buried deep within his subconscious somewhere.
2) Inspector Gadget often speaks to himself openly. He appears unaware that he occasionally has no inner monologue.
3) Sometimes Gadget gets caught up with his obsessive search to catch Dr Claw and occasionally assumes and confronts people about being Part of his evil MAD Corporation. He has even attempted to chase and catch innocent people because he has made himself believe they are MAD agents in disguise. This comes from the time Penny, brain and him were caught in Egypt by several MAD agents disguised as tourists visiting the pyramids which lead to Gadgets reckless escape attempt and Penny’s death.
4) Gadget walks with a limp due to all the cyberware crammed into his body. However this does not affect his ability to run, move at a fast pace or move silently.
