with enough buzz here on the boards, why not the Devs & experienced players work together to make a new set of templates

see what people play/ what is seen at tables alot
better then what is in the main book, without completely min/max (sorry, no pornmancers)
be mission legal so at conventions a GM can pull one out, or a new player can use one right out of the book

yes, I understand everyone has their quirks on making characters, which is why it would be a joint venture

and when done, they can be offered either on this board or a gamestore (like Drivethrus RPG) for free. it might entice new players.....I knowI check out much of the free content just to see if a game is even worth looking into

thoughts?

Check out UmaroIV's sig and/or thread right here in this subforum;  they might violate the "not completely min/max" requirement of yours, but he's put a lot of work into 'em.

Umaro has provided some missions legal and very optimized characters examples.  As Critias has said, check his sig.  If anything, they are a shade over-optimized for example characters, but then again they were not created as general example characters, but rather created so that a new player could sit down and be effective at a table with experienced players running characters with significant karma.

This second part I must say carefully to avoid getting another smite.

While I really like the Shadowrun game universe, and for the most part the current 4th edition game line, CGL is frankly weak with post publication product support.  Errata, rules clarifications, official faqs, etc, don't seem to happen and probably are not going to happen.  There is a very long list of things that end up being "GM's call" with this system because of slightly loose writing or unclear mechanics.  I do think the core mechanics for the system are very sound, but there are alot of specific applications, stacking questions, interpretations of particular wording in the rules, etc, that have never been "officially" addressed.  So a re-write of the sample characters from the core book isn't in the cards.

And honestly, I think I can understand that.  GGL is a small company that uses alot of freelancers.  Shadowrun is a niche game.  I imagine 99% of the energy of the core development team is probably spent trying to generate enough sales to keep the company in the black and the doors open.  Game design is a hard road financially under the best of circumstances and even more so for a product like Shadowrun.  If they are going to pay someone it probably needs to be to make something they could sell, not to be head  of  the rules court or to make free downloads.

UmaroIV's characters are well done, though not broken down in normal stats
he uses the style I have seen in Season 4 Missions for NPCs, which makes it easier on the GM to run the game

it is great start in the right direction

good points baraonspam
SR has done well to be still going in today's market
only reason I suggested free templates is to help get new players in, and like the complait about First Run in Runner's toolkit, why pay for something I already have.., the basic tempaltes do work though some are a bit weak or not well thought out. it could all be how the character is percetive

and the Coal rule is..you cannot make everyone happy

You can plug Umaro's characters into Chummer (a creation program found on Dumpshock) and they transfer into a normal character sheet very easily.
You can't tell me what toys I can play with.
