What music do you like to use in your games (if you play music during your run)?

My friends and I have a tradition of starting every rpg with a Powerpoint presentation that introduces the game, the title, the players, etc, just like the opening credits of a movie.  I'm looking for a suitable accompanying theme.

The best I've been able to come up with off the top of my head is the soundtrack to Blade Runner, but that might be too cliche.

Any suggestions?

I love the PowerPoint thing! +1 to you.

Music - I stream an industrial/goth station as we play.  Sometimes music is part of the plot - hidden messages and such.

W00t for another music topic.

Kudos for the Power Point idea!  Must allow for things to go pretty smoothly.

And kudos too for the goth radio!  Too cool.

Yes, for me personally, music is a must in whatever games I run.  Typically, I tend to assault my brain with certain tunes while I work on my plots and design the general layout of a gaming session.  In turn, I try to play similar music during the game as it helps me remember things much more fluidly.

Right now, the music I'm into is a right mix of Industrial, Harsh EBM, Japanese scream-o, and a selection of Original Soundtracks from a good many sources of movies, anime and video games -- the full of which, to me, sound very much Shadowrun-esque.

How about some specific title and/or artist suggestions?  I'm a child of the 80's, so I'm not too in-touch with the latest music styles and I don't video game.  :-)

Sure!

I actually put in some suggestions for music in this thread: scroll down!

There's tons more, obviously, but I wouldn't want to needlessly clutter up the forums by throwing around all the stuff I listen to.  If you wish, however, I'd be happy to toss you some in PM.

Metal.  The heavier, the faster, the harder, the louder, the better.  Punk, too, same thing.

Start at DragonForce and move up from there.

Thanks for the heads-up, Fallen!  I'll have to spend hours sampling your suggestions!

Depending on the type of game, the intro music to cowboy bebop could work perfectly

You could acquire the Shadowrun Sega OST. Has some great synthesized for use in clubs.

For standard background noise I use industrial or gothic metal like others have suggested, but I tend to only pull out instrumentals (vocals tend to distract my players). I have a preference toward Sirenia, Lacuna Coil, and early Tristania albums.

I tend to pull out specific songs for certain music types. I have a list somewhere, but the only one coming to me off the top of my head (moving files between computers so everything is haywire right now)  is:

I find Shadowrun to be the most difficult game to set music to.  With D&D you can use classical or folk music easily.  For Space operas again Classical, for modern games modern music.  Shadowrun though it's more difficult.  Think about this.  Do you think Paul Macarthy could have come up with Smells Like Teen Spirit during the run of The Beatles?  No, it would take Kurt Cobain 30 years later to come up with it.

I once had a player ask me during a go through of On The Run, "what does Goblinrock sound like?"  I told him "imagine a cover of La Bamba done by The Dropkick Murpheys, that had been covered by a Norweigen Deathmetal Band that had been given a Techno remix, on speed".  That sounded about right to me.
