Hi all. Right now I'm running a shadowrun campain where all my players are just getting into the running scene and right now, I'm running them as part time runners, so they all have to get other sources of income or go down in lifestyle.
One of the runners are a former security wage mage. That lost his job, caused by a curse that gave him spiritbane spirits of man and corporter intrigue. Right now he's doing som freelance wardbuilding and are thinking about leasing a spirit out to do magical security.

The ward part I handle at he gets cheated a bit because he's self employed and are in bad standing so my thought is he can get hired for as many hour's per day as he can get success on etiquette and and the pay is 50NY per hour half the going rate. Gliths are that there are spirits of man nearby he's work area and they don't like his pressence

But the spirit leasing i have no idea of how to handle so i thought i would ask the hive mind ;)

"cheated a bit"???

If I'm remembering correctly, mages go for like 200Y per hour or higher.......Probably more....

The norm for having a mage put up a ward is 100 nuyen per hour. (SR4A, pg. 194)

The easiest way to do this is to require them to take the Day Job quality.  They decide how much their salary is (and how many BP they get), by how many hours they're locked into the job for.

Personally, I have always thought that the prices listed for magical services to be a little low. I recall reading somewhere that less than 2% of the population has the potential for magic. Even less are actually trained. You'd think that with such a small talent pool, mages could command much better pricing. :(
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Fifty nuyen an hour to build wards is way too low, honestly. I mean, dude, if the rigger does what I would do, then he'd probably have a mechanic's shop where he can make extra money keeping people's rides going, and he's probably going to be pulling in more than that in 2074, especially considering how much mechanics charge for services nowadays.

But can an unlicensed mechanic make the same money as a licensed one? Depends on what sort of work he's doing. If he's doing illegal work for the shadow community, then they won't care about licenses, and he can charge extra for the risk he's taking and his silence afterwards.

I figure that the cost of warding is what it is because so many are capable of and willing to do it; a lot more people can put up a ward than have the skills to be a combat mage. (Nor is the SR equivalent of $100/hour small potatoes.) Even if only 1% of the population was Awakened and only 10% of the Awakened did wards as either a primary or side buiness, that would still be 3,000 providers in the Seattle Metroplex. Anybody who tries to charge more would have to have a pretty good reason for people to pay extra for them when others are only charging 100Y x Force. You'd think that if this PC was only charging 50Y/hour, he'd be innundated with work or else have a ton of mages after his ass for price gouging... or both. Then again, a ward provider does have to be trustworthy... you're giving them access to the place that you want protected.

We've all sort of skipped the other question he asked, which was about leasing spirits for security work. That he should be able to charge a lot for, because to get the spirits to stick around more than a day they'd have to be bound, and that requires 500Y x Force in materials and taking a serious risk of injury from Drain and an uncontrolled spirit rampage.

Well about the 50ny an hour pay that means if he works full time he's gonna end up making 8k NY a month, thats all most the high lifestyle payed. So I think 50NY an hour after taxes for a safe job is pretty well pay.
I thought about the spirits i thought about saying the pay for that is the 500x force per month times the danger. Ie if the spirit just patoles and report to you or some one else its 1000x forces per month, if it's used to fight but is allowed to flee twice that and the higher the danger is the high the pay of.
And handle it with the multiplier is the number of dice to roll per month each 1 is one favor burned. That would put the average income for an 8 die summoner that summons a force 2 spirits on 3000NY in witch 1000 goes to materials.
So that would for a full time mage that summons one force 2 spirit for patrol work be a high lifestyle
About the mechanic he should properly make around 5000NY after expense to keep the shop going I don't think he should end up living on a higher lifestyle that.

Well, full time in Shadowrun is 6 days a week, with 12-14 hour shifts, so. :)
