I always assumed that replacing your eyes with cybereyes negated the natural benefits of your race, but a teammate pointed out that he assumed the opposite.  I can't find anything to support either view.  Help?  Does an elf with cybereyes need to be low-light vision again?

I'm not sure where it says in the book, but a character which replace his natural eyes with cybereyes will, indeed, lose the natural benefits of his metatype. Check the Sample characters on SR4A; whenever one of them has cybereyes implanted there's a note saying that she lost her natural thermographic/low light vision due to implants.

I don't think it was as much as someone trying to get something for free as an honest mistake.

I recall it saying somewhere in the books that the implants like cybereyes were actually just small structures put in place by nanites inside your original eyes, the same with cyberears and the like. But yeah, if you replace a full eye with a cybereye, no more original eye powers.

If you get the eye ware separately, then yeah, you'll keep your natural vision augments--but as said in the quoted post, the cyber eyes will remove what was there before. (This is why I try to avoid getting eye replacements on elves I play).

In short, to get what you want, you generally have to give up something else.

My point was that one should be skeptical of free things.

In SR2 (I do not remember for SR3) natural low-light/thermo vision was better than cyber one, so it was better not to replace the natural one by a cyber version. This is no more the case in SR4 but I somehow still think that way...
