As it has some current-world relevance, and is generally an area known for it's conflict, I was considering planning a future run that would take my players to the middle east.  Can anyone tell me some books or other sources that could shed some light on the state of the middle east in Shadowrun?  In particular I'm really interested in what effects the Awakening had on the area.

Street Magic has a small mention of how the Islamic sects view magic, and the poster Goat Foot mentions the Great Dragon Aden, but I don't know where to find more information (if there is any).

Jeeze.  It would almost sound stupid until you realize we're talking about an immortal elf clown sword fighting a dragon ghost in a mall.

Year of the Comet has some info as well... but it is all pretty limited.

It is just not an area that has been covered that well, probably for a lot of reasons....

Ah, I have Sixth World Almanac.  Can't believe I didn't think of looking through it...

And yeah, maybe it's too touchy a subject to say much about it in Shadowrun.  I don't know; my understanding of current events is very small.

Its plain simple, according to 6WA. Izrael got gassed by Lybia. Lybia got nuked by Izrael. Most of the area is now scene for Desert wars. Mana Storm covered most of Jeruzalem, left only a few alive, and than murdered and cpsequently Shedim possesed Ibn Eisa declared great Jihad and the rest of the civilization got wiped out. Not to stand back, Aden razed Tehran to declare the Jihad canceled, killing maybe hundreds of thousands in the process. Saeder Krupp established heavy presence in the area, which led Heszaby to razing their HQ...just dont recall if it was in Dubai... Istanbul got heavily infested by Bugs, and when those hives were cleaned, Istanbul become Smuggler h(e)aven.
Imo i forgot the first Jihad, that happened during Eurowars, but i dont have this updated in memory for a while...

It's a shame I'm not allowed to retcon the entire AFA/Second Ottoman Jihad/southern Eurowars because it's so unbelievably stupid and has its origins in the second-worst sourcebook.

And, yes, the S-K Middle East HQ Hestaby razed was in Dubai.

Dang, so some crazy stuff did happen there.  Shedim, bug spirits, multiple dragons, a mana storm...  All on top of the usual conflicts.  The place sounds like it'd be rich for dramatic storytelling opportunities and a dangerous, violent atmosphere.

The previously-mentioned Shadows of Asia is a fun book and will have a ton of what you're looking for.  That said, the entire Jihad/AfA thing seemed really forced and never made much sense.

I love running in Israel--you can do stories that range from the glass towers of Tel Aviv to the bazaars of the Old City.  Plus, you have more mystic sects per capita than just about anywhere else on the planet.

Killing so many sacred cows, I'm banned from India.

IIRC this came from The Year of the Commet, which i remember was quite fun to read. Or you are talking about something else?

I meant the original "second Eurowars," where the Alliance for Allah managed to unify all the Muslims in southwest Asia and north Africa to invade Europe through the Balkans/up the Danube in the east and across the Strait of Gibraltar into Iberia with various other incursions into Cyprus, Italy and the other islands in the Mediterranean. Introduced in the Germany SB (which is not well-regarded by anyone, but which I still think is better than Loose Alliances).
