Like, if i wanna get on the matrix, but i dont wanna drill a hole in my head, there's gear that'll let me do it. Not as well as someone with the hole drilled, but i can DO it.
Does there exist gear of any sort that will allow non awakened to at least perceive the astral plane?

A trodenet for part A
No for part B
(well, in SR4 there was a Lucifer Lamp that helped with the Perception Roll to see magic and there's some Drugs , Tempo f.E. that made unawakened see the Auras of People but its not possible to get a skill if you can't assense on a permanent base)

I could see a GM allowing a mundane character to astrally perceive with a deepweed addition while on the drug.
Forced astral perception means not only would you take a -2 to all actions on the physical plane, but that guardian spirit won't even have to materialize to hurt you.
Just had a scary thought about a Corp. forcing a mage to take deepweed on a spacestation

5e just came out - and it's really not all that different than 4e, unlike the 3e-4e shift.  Get the old stuff, tweak it until it looks right as compared to other stuff in its class, and go with it until we get to that point.  Remember that 'early in the edition' it's always the same in regards to requiring house-rules for stuff from a previous edition; the devs simply cannot convert everything simultaneously, so be patient.  With 4e, there was a lot of stuff from 3e that had to be house-ruled all the way to the end, because they didn't provide the deep game-system development for 4e the way it had been for 3e.

You can do all things on the matrix with normal Augmented Reality heads-up display.
For this you only need an imaging device with an image link (like a monocle so you still can cast spells).

If you want to experience VR (rag-doll-mode) then you need DNI and a Sim-Module.
For an awakened that would probably be Trodes + Commlink modded with a Sim-Module.



...only awakened can view or enter the astral plane.
