Thanks Cs.  He's gonna have 6 Firearms (group) and 6 agility so he can use a lil of everything.  I see him using assault rifles a lot with a SMG for quieter jobs.

Ok, so if I'm making an adept with firearms skils and I want to take advantage of a smartlink without getting wired what are my options.  I can buy say a Predator and glasses with Smartlink and just run a wire from the pistol to the glasses and that works right?

If your adept is going for machine pistols and automatics, you're probably better off taking a laser sight and tracer ammunition. You get +2 accuracy, +1 dice pool and don't need to worry about what connects to what in what mode. Just need an FA capable weapon, of which there are plenty in each class of automatics (pistols/SMG/AR)

I would suggest Contacts instead of glasses & wire, they are aleady wireless for that bonus as well as everything else a smartgunlink will let you do & back them up with a cheap laser sight (125) as well for those times when someone tries to take down your smartlink.

I would suggest Contacts instead of ...
With contacts you have no option than to connect your smartgun wireless working on concert with DNI.

With goggles you can choose to use a wireless connection working on concert with DNI or connected with a wire between your gun and your goggles (wireless OFF and no need for DNI).

Agreed,  I just have issues w/ imagining anyone running around adept style like Jackie Chan with NVG's strapped to their head.
I don't care what the movies make it look like, they are not enjoyable to wear & IMHO look goofy as heck so I've just never been a fan.
That said, glasses that change shading at least seem to be a mildly better option.
Though I still see them all getting knocked the first time someone hits you or you have to dive through a doorway.

I'd add that smartlink has a couple of advantages over laser sights sometimes overlooked.

  • Being able to fire from complete cover w/ -3 penalty, combine with a periscope to minimize your exposure
  • Eject Clip and change fire mode become free actions.

If you're using a shotgun or weapon which could be SA/BF/FA, this becomes increasingly important.

So, a laser-sight wielding character would take two simple actions to reload while one with a smartgun only needs one simple action.

Note: With Errata, the periscope reduces the penalty from firing from cover to a -1. A lovely situation.
You're only ever one bag of grenades away from chunky salsa.

Agreed completely.
I just find the LasSit to be a very cheap back up system.

Being able to fire from complete cover w/ -3 penalty, combine with a periscope to minimize your exposure...
Reason why a smartgun system let you fire around corners without exposing yourself for only -3 dice instead of -6 dice as you normally get with Blind Fire is because the smartgun come with a camera.

Instead of camera you can use a top mounted periscope to fire around corners without exposing yourself.
A top mounted periscope only give you a negative dice pool modifier of 2 dice (or just 1 dice if wireless).

You can use a weapon with a top mounted periscope together with a built in or under barrel mounted laser sight.
Using a smartgun system (or rather a camera) is not the only way to fire around corners...

Think more along the lines of Blade Runner or 5th Element; pollution is horrendous, acid rain is a common occurrence, and most people need such devices just to stand going outside. Fortunately for you, the corporations have your back; you can choose from a large assortment of stylish devices, in custom colors! ;D

Quite right.

What I continue not to get (in theory) is why the periscope, which isn't being fed directly into your eyesight, gives any more benefit than the camera on your smartgun.

The thing about contacts is that there relatively hard to take off, decker hacks your goggles/glasses just take'em off. They hack your contacts...... I hope your good at blind firing chummer.

This is why it is I never use the contacts. Plus, the face-to-face group's decker hacked someone's contacts in the last session and used the image link to fill the guy's vision with gay troll porn. Then used the distraction to delete the gun's smartgun software.

Another reason to use a monocle i guess ;)

Then again, if a hacker attack my contacts I would probably simply just spend a free action to cut him off.

Toggling an individual device’s wireless functionality off is a Free Action, as is toggling all of your wireless
devices to “wireless off.” You lose wireless bonuses, but the items can no longer be wirelessly hacked

What I'm wondering is how things work when you turn it back on.
Does the Hacker have reacquire the hacked item, or, is it still "hacked"?
I "barely" touched decking in 1E for simple stuff & have not had that desire ever again in later editions.  ;)
Closest I came was designing a Rigger for 3rd for a campaign that never happened  :(

For the whole shebang, you need the smartlink in your whatever, and some trodes for a DNI. The trodes are 70 bucks and you can throw em in a helmet or a ballistic mask.
