I have a player who is a Troll Adept , follower of Wolf and walks  the Way of Beasts

Just before his first initiation trial I want Wolf to show him a vision of the previous magic world, without technology and pollution. Is this something a  Mentor Spirit should be able to do?

Do you think I should show the player glimpses of Barsaive? If yes, which book should I read for inspiration?

(The elf rigger has already dreamt of a past life in Blood Wood, and I really like Earthdawn references)

Hard to say since Mentors are very, very loosely defined for the deliberate purpose of leaving room for multiple, conflicting interpretations and having them all still be "right"... even int he same group.

If this sis something you wanted to do, perhaps look at a dream quest.

Basically through ritual you induce a state of lucid dreaming, from there the mentor spirit could guide the dreamer... one could just use this for a vision, but perhaps just a simple quest with the vision as the reward.

I say go for it.

As ScytheKnight said, Mentor Spirits aren't really defined, they can really be anything. If the spirits are actual mythical creatures they might very well have been around back then. If they're not, but a construct of the Mage's subconscious mind, then it could simply create a vision like that. If it's something else, like a force of nature that was created with the Awakening, it could still make up that vision as a warning "that if somebody doesn't do something it will get worse" or so.

I see nothing wrong with this.  The idea has been around for centuries in the real world, and with the inclusion of magic I see any kind of (especially) metaplanar quest as being a vision quest.  The mentor spirit should absolutely be used in this context.  In fact, in some situations I've used mentor spirits, or visions of them at least, to help steer a character in the right direction.  It's a fantastic tool for a GM, so long as the mentor never directly intervenes.
