Fireball?!?

Her tradition is different from mine, shamanic rather than hermitic, but I can tell a fireball when I see it.  I feel a cold sweat when I realize there are vulnerable people in the room.  Chesh, her daughter and Arc!  Arc is barely a step from the grave right now!

I reach deep within myself to counter the explosion and...

NOTHING

Counterspell fireball (target Chesh, daughter, Yelena, Arc, myself): 6d6t5: 0 [6d6t5=2, 4, 4, 3, 1, 1] Counterspell ineffective

Soak fireball damage: 12d6t5: 3 [12d6t5=6, 3, 5, 1, 2, 3, 3, 6, 4, 4, 4, 2]  Take 3 damage

Armor save against fireball/catching fire (9 armor + 6 FR - 5 force = 10 dice): 10d6t5: 4 [10d6t5=6, 2, 1, 5, 6, 3, 2, 1, 6, 4] Do NOT catch fire

Save against mass confusion: 11d6t5: 3 [11d6t5=6, 3, 5, 3, 3, 1, 6, 1, 2, 2, 1]  Spell has no effect

The ball of flame bursts into existence behind me, bowling me over and forcing my face into the ground.  Before I can gather my wits, the world spins a moment and then rights itself as a chaos spell intrudes and is immediately dismissed from my mind.  It makes little difference.

Nothing...nothing happened.  Allah...have...you abandoned me?

The implications are mind numbing, but fortunately I have things to do and I push them from my terrified mind.  I lift my head and see Yelena-sensei aiming where it appears Dana has fled for cover.  Arc, however...

I look back toward the entrance of the room to see a smoldering lump of clothes and flesh.

Sensei!

Wasting no time I reach for the medkit which had until recently been attached to my own body and move to engage it to save my teacher and friend.  If she's on fire, I'll extinguish her.  After that I can heal her...

...assuming I still can...

MedKit stabilization on Arc after fireball: 12d6t5: 5 [12d6t5=2, 2, 2, 6, 1, 4, 3, 6, 2, 6, 5, 5]
MedKit first aid on Arc after fireball: 12d6t5: 4 [12d6t5=4, 4, 4, 5, 2, 2, 6, 1, 6, 3, 3, 6]

[6:19:25 PM] Cat: So I douse Daily and Arc who are embraced and therefore I assume one joint action, then perform stabilization on Arc, then perform first aid on Arc
[6:19:43 PM] Cat: While the Medkit works on Arc, next round I will cast HEAL on Daisy

The high pitched terrified scream of a little girl pierces the air followed by, "Momma!" Facing Tusks and Arc as they were Chesh and Daisy never had a chance to avoid the fireball and Daisy's scream is filled with pain and terror as exposed flesh is burned. Chesh is better protected, a lifetime of boosting and being prepared means she's almost always dressed for the occaision. But Daisy isn't nearly so well armed and only Arc's quick action to block her from the flames saves her from far worse. Dana's hope to avoid most of the blast by ducking for cover does not prevent the flames kiss from finding her, although, with Tusks bearing down on her she might have wished otherwise.

Dana is acting on a survival instinct. doing her best to get out alive. But she gambles and loses. The troll powered tool cart shoves Dana and then tips over on top of her.

No more!  First time: shame on you.  Second time: shame on me!
Tuskaloosa was determined to make sure there was no second time--no further volley of spells.
Her normally long but easy gait was a ground eating run.  She squinted through a kaleidoscope fog as the  air rapidly dispersed its lingering heat.   Here and there, scorched spots stood out as angry scabs.
She ignored it all, save the yellow-greenish glow of the warm tool cart, alert for the tell-tale red-yellows of a live body: the woman had not gone past her hastily sought shelter.

The troll lowered her shoulder.
Her  elbows were practically scraping the floor as she slammed into the metal shelves, a dim part of her mind noting thankfully that they were all closed...

She anticipated the tool caddy would be heavy: it was.
She did not anticipate its wheels stopping.
...Or its bulk tipping...

Instinctively, she pushed up and sailed over the  unit, her feet barely clearing the far side.
Tuskaloosa threw a hand to the wall and spun herself around, ready to run over her quarry again.
She took a deep breath instead as she caught sight of Dana's soot-dusted arm, extending out from under the now greenish-blue caddy.

"Is she out ?" asked Marco as he examined the mage, "quickly help me remove that thing from her before she dies." He said and helped Tuska remove the tool box  "misguided soul" , he said when he saw the unconscious mage - "This is too much for a single day." he thought.

(If the mage is heart Marco will tend to her wounds- stabilize her and pack her as a cat again.)

When Marco examines Dana she is badly injured. The fireball hit her hard and she's barely breathing, And when Marco examines her more closely it's evident from the quickly swelling goose egg on her right temple that something hit her head hard knocking her out, at least for now.

Marco places his hand on Dana's head and chants softly - a yellow glow envelopes Dana and closes her wounds.
Hopefully she survives this drama and can repent her aggressive behavior.

Dana's breathing becomes deeper, less ragged and the burns across her skin lose the raw appearance of open flesh to slowly become red patches. She stirs.

Marco grabs a piece of cloth and quickly blindfold Dana, repeating the process multiple times to make sure that there is no way she is able to see. He is too compassionate to shot her and send her back to sleep. After all shes been through the accident, the fireball and the toolbox it really is a difficult day for poor Ms. Wallace. He cannot let her sling her mojo like that again tough, not anymore. "Tuska, do you have some restraints for her hands? not strictly needed but I don't want her to take off the eye cover - if she cannot see us she cannot target us with spells" Since waking up can come as quite a shock, and who knows how dangerous Dana is Marco attempts to make her as comfortable as he can despite the safety measures they are about to take. He whispers softly  "It is okay... you are safe...Nothing bad will happen to you." .  He is waiting for Tuska to restrain her hands, but is doing his best to keep her comfortable.

“Quickly,” Marco called from his place on the floor, “help me remove this thing before she dies.”

Wordlessly, the troll complied.  Metal gave a tortured shriek against concrete as she lifted the bulk and pushed it far enough to clear the crumpled body.
She caught the elf's quiet “misguided soul” before he dropped his voice into a lower mutter.

Tuskaloosa looked around the room, assessing the damage.

Where she had been heartbeats before Firefly, Yelena and Cheshire now knelt. The scorched backside of the decker and the Vory elf betrayed little movement except shifts and turns; all she knew was that they were fighting to save Arc.  She took it as a hopeful sign that they were fighting in the first place.
Near them...

The troll's heart stopped.  Chesh was draped over a blanket-covered lump.

The echoes of her own warning rang in her ears:
I'm sure your daughter has heard strong language, but you have ten seconds to get her clear anyway.
...you have ten seconds...
No...

She watched as the gnome lifted up and carefully pulled pack the drape.
“She's out,” carried through the hushed air.
Firefly's body was already shifting to the girl's direction.

“Tuska, do you have some restraints for her hands? They're not strictly needed but I don't want her to take off the eye cover - if she cannot see us she cannot target us with spells.”

Restrain her hands...
She caught movement from the corner of her eye.  Alyce came through the door at a stumbling run, the bulk of a medkit clutched to his chest.
Hatter stood in the doorway: pale as plaster.

“Hatter.”
She got no response.
“Hatter!
He jumped at the sound of his name. “Get me some spray adhesive,” she said softer but firmly.  “This is a shop—I know you have some.”
He nodded quickly, then disappeared.

Frantically but with trained purpose I maneuver the medkit into place and set it in motion, following the directions first to stabilize and then to heal the rigger.  Best to trust technology with her for now, the troll's misadventure with another medkit notwithstanding.

This one worked its technological wizardry on me.  Now please work just one more time.

As soon as I become superfluous with the older woman, I shift my attention to a so much smaller one.  The girl, Daisy, is not even two feet tall.  Such a tiny soul, and a mother who is still around to love her.

Please, Allah, if not for me, smile on this girl who didn't choose this path.

I take a deep breath...and reach for the mana....

...and it answers!

Heal Daisy (Force 6 spell: 6 spellcasting + 5 magic - 2 gnome magic resist): 9d6t5: 5 [9d6t5=5, 6, 5, 4, 5, 1, 4, 1, 5]
Resist drain for Daisy heal: 11d6t5: 5 [11d6t5=1, 3, 5, 4, 6, 6, 2, 4, 1, 5, 5]

Chesh had grabbed the medkit quick as a blink from Alyce and had it on Daisy faster than Subaru could believe. Seemingly in one motions she opened it, turned it on, placed patches and turned on advanced options. Daisy was crying, her tiny body jerking with pain. Alyce knelt beside her, one hand slipping his finger into her tiny hand, the other stroking her hair. "There, there girl. Your mum's got you. You're going to be fine." while his eyes focused on the medkits readouts. Hatter came back in with a fire extinguisher and was leading a small brigade. "Smoke the toaster step in time. Never need a reason, never need a rhyme. Smoke the toaster step in time!" He leaps atop one of the tables and the extinguisher goes off putting out fires in time to his chanting. As soon as Tusks looks at him angrily thinking, Damn the man. He's forgotten the most important element of ending the threat! And see's a flash of blue, silver and white with the tri-mixer already affixed sail towards her. Whoa, he definitely brought the good stuff! Set-up time on this is less than 6 seconds. Tusks catches it deftly and turns, kneels and takes off the cap swiftly acting to end the threat of the mage by gluing her hands down. Hatters fire brigade spreads out in the meantime to put out the flames and has the situation swiftly under control.
Chesh is working on Daisy and says, "No major damage thank the small gods. So far it's just burns. It's ok sweetie. It's ok. I can give you some relief soon." She pauses shocked the moment Subaru begins her healing spell. But, as it works and Daisys' tears stop and her little body relaxs Chesh sags in relief. And once the spell is complete she gets up and makes an angry beeline to Dana. As soon as she gets to Marco she stops, pulls the gun out of his holster to shoot Dana.

Yelena watches as the mage fails to dodge her own flames, followed by Tuskaloosa smashing the tool bin into and on top of her.  When the Troll and Marco manage to lift the bin from the body, Yelena raises her silenced pistol, aiming for the mages head.  Sending an APDS round to the prone and unconscious mage now will make it particularly hard for her to cast another fireball.  But even as her body tells the finger to tighten on the trigger, the large form of Tuskaloosa moves into her sight path to bend over the mage.  Yelna twitches her wrist and lifts the barrel of the gun, sending the deadly round into the ceiling.  The moment passes and Yelena lowers her gun, replacing it in its holster.  Turning away, she goes to where Firefly is kneeling near Arc and the gnomes, kneeling to see if she can be of assistance.  She checks the medkit connections and nods at Firefly, but not say anything when she sees the young woman and Chesh concentrating over the little Gnome girl.  The combination of medkit and magic seem to do the trick and the girl will live through this without even much of a physical reminder of what happened.

Yelena is busy re-checking on Arc and so barely notices Chesh as the Gnome gets up and goes to where Marco is.  Her first indication of anything wrong is a scuffle between Marco and Chesh over his gun.  Frowning, she rises and walks over to see what the matter is, only to belatedly realize what the woman's intent is and knowing that she will be too late to stop her.

As Marco sees Chesh pulling the gun out of her holster he grabs her hands and jumps on top of her for subdoal and he will shield Dana with his own body he tells her"You are no killer - don't become one now.".

Marco will attempt to stop her with unarmed combat to subdo her and prevent her from aiming the gun at the mage.
unarmed: 7d6t5 3 6d6t5: 3 [7d6t5=1, 4, 3, 6, 5, 5, 2]

removed the last dice due to not accouting for wound modifier - the result is the same 3 hits. Hopefully enough to restrain a little girl.

Chesh struggles with Marco angrily for a moment. But, as his words sink in she pauses, and then sags. The moment, and the adrenaline is gone. She glares at Marco for a moment and then turns and spits on Dana. She gives Marco a look then and says, "Let me go." Her body is more relaxed, and her head is already turning back to her daughter. Marco complies, and knows that's he's saved two lives, no three, just in that moment. He may not ever be a shadowrunner. His compassion for others won't let him kill. But, just by being there, by being him, he saves lives. Shilla had once told him, "To save one life is to save the world entire." She'd sounded like she'd believed it. And he'd thought that she was like him. Someone of sympathy and compassion, until she started blackmailing him and using him on jobs. and he'd learned she was like everyone else. But still, that doesn't make the words any less true.
