It might have been from a  previous edition

Thanks for the heads up. I must admit that strictly speaking from the wording in the book they really don't make it seem like there is a huge benefit to the data jack. I must say that I have loved the idea of wearing them as part of a baseball cap. Granted that would need to be taken off when indoors.

Unless you're in Texas.

Data Trails has a section on how widespread datajacks really are. I'd suggest reading up on that, as it provides good setting background for why characters would have datajacks beyond "mere" numbers.

Unless you're in Texas.

An college instructor (in Texas) once told me that real cowboys take off their hats when they walk into a building or talk to a lady.

I teach my sons that hats always come off at the table (even in Whataburger).

I work in rural areas a lot with older persons, and I make sure to take my cap off when I address the lady.  Must admit that it doesn't come off when I walk into a building.

In 4th edition (the only one I've played so far) I mostly put the datajack as a capacity items in my cyberears instead of separate.  I'm not sure if it can be done that way in 5th, but that way you save the essence (the price is the same).  It's been a while since I played a non-awakened, so I'm not completely up to date (my awakened characters always use trodes if they have to directly connect to the matrix, although mostly they just work in AR).

I liked it mostly because it was easy to make a wired connection between yourself and whatever it is you wanted to access.  WiFi inhibiting paint or something similar, no problem, just plug and play. :)

I'm not even sure that it can be done in 4the ed, because Cyberears and Cybereyes can except only Ear and Eye Implants (by RAW). Cybermembers could except Headware that have capacity but not Cybereyes or Ears.
(so you could put a Datajack in the Finger of a Cyberarm or a Comlink in a Cyberhand)

Back in SR2 you could put them in either cybereyes or ears. Not sure if 3rd had that. Still imagining that creepy image of someone inserting a huge jack into his eye is just discomforting
If Tom Brady’s a Spike Baby, what does that make Brees and Rodgers?

According to SR2 p. 247-248 cyberears would ...accept a minor additional adjustment (one feature of 0.2 essence cost or less) without additional impact on the users's system (Cosmetic modification, Damper, High Frequency, Low Frequency and/or Recorder) and Eyes would ...accept additional vision enhancements up to 0.5 essence cost without further essence loss (Camera, Cosmetic Modification, Flare Compensation, Low-Light and/or Thermographic). Cyberlimbs could be fitted with ...spurs and hand razors at no additional loss to the users's system. You could also built-in a smartlink in your cyberlimb for half essence cost (back in SR2 smartlink was bodyware that used a subdermal induction pad in the users palm to link with the smartgun).

In SR2 you placed headware in the cranium, internal headware inside the brain, ear modificaitons in the ears, vision enhancements in eyes and bodyware in the body.

Dont think trodes come with a plug to jack into stuff but I think you can buy that seperately anyways

Incorrect. Even if you specifically bought your trodes as a throwback device or manually made it into one, the universal data connector would still remain.

Quote from: SR5 page 232
Devices have a universal data connector, which is the global standard for connecting devices together for power and data exchange.

I am only aware of one device that does not have a universal data connector, and that is contacts.

In cybertechnology, I believe the Cybereye datajack was introduced. Also I think in the shadowtalk either there or at some other place talked about being able to put the jack in any orifice, leading to some disturbing walk-ins on deckers.
