Did you use one out of the book or one that the organizer provided? If the former, there are a few archetypes that work well, even though they are not completely optimized (street sam, face). If the latter, then the organizer should have done a better job at providing what the players needed.
I complained on Dumpshock about this particular Missions game right after GenCon. I'll briefly review the problems. The GM admitted he'd just been re-allocated to this particular Missions game and had barely read it. Also, there were eight players at the table. Compounding it, there were many tables in the room. It was loud and distracting and I had a hard time hearing the soft-spoken GM only two seats around the table from him.
On my end of things, I made a poor choice in picking an archetype. I was trying to avoid doubling or tripling up on character roles in the group but that's hard to do with eight people. The organizer had a box with some of the archetypes printed out. I ended up picking the Gunslinger Adept which, in hindsight, is one of the least optimal builds in the book. So that part is very much my own fault.
All in all, not a very positive experience. The crowded room was not the SR organizer's fault but throwing a GM who didn't know the scenario at a table with too many players certainly was.
