I'm trying to figure out what is the correct calculation for recoil compensation from Strength.

Below is a quote from the Recoil section of SR5 rulebook, page 175:

Quote
You get 1 free point anytime you start firing, then you add your Strength/3 (rounded up) and the recoil compensation of any guns you are prepared to shoot (that means loaded and in your hands

But the example on page 177 of the rulebook, under Burst Recoil, gives a different calculation, which comes out to Strength/2 (rounded up):

Quote
His Strength of 4 gives him 2 points to add to his 1 free point of compensation

Meanwhile, in Run & Gun, page 110, under Progressive Recoil within The Little Things sidebar, the calculation of Strength/2 is also given just like in the aforementioned example:

Quote
The basic rules allow every character to fire 2 bullets before taking recoil penalties (1 free + STR/2(rounded up))

So which is the correct calculation of Strength for recoil compensation?

The second example above conforms to str/3 round up.

The run and gun example is wrong afaik.

IMO, rules trump examples because the examples are typically not written correctly.
Playability > verisimilitude.

Major Doom, another way to think of Str/3 Rounded up is:

Str 1-3 = Recoil 1
Str 4-6 = Recoil 2
Str 7-9 = Recoil 3
Str 10-12 = Recoil 4
Etc.
That's just like... your opinion, man.

4/3 (round up) = 2

1-3 = 2
4-6 = 3
7-9 = 4
10-12 = 5
13-15 = 6

you always get 1 free in additional to those from strength.
If Tom Brady’s a Spike Baby, what does that make Brees and Rodgers?

You get 1 free point anytime you start firing.
(This might or might not mean that you always get 1 free point)
