Honestly not sure where you are getting this from.  Nero was nuts, plain and simple.  Plus he's a Romulan which means concern for anything not Romulan is pretty minimal.  He's bent on revenge against Spock at any cost.  If you are expecting ANYTHING logical from him then you don't understand Nero's motivation.
Okay, for a single example: How long did he and his shipmates float around in dead space twiddling their thumbs doing nothing, not resupplying, taking shoreleave, communicating with, oh, anyone? Twenty years was it? Stupid, insulting and any writer worth his salt would never do such a painfully stupid thing.

I believe the implication is that they were laying low until Spock showed up to get revenge on.  Also I believe the implication would be that anyone that did encounter Nero just would not live to tell about it.  Space is a big place and if one ship wants to remain anonymous and has the capabilities to enforce that desire I think that is a reasonable assumption.  I understand if it bothers you they didn't go into it explicitly but really it is immaterial to the story IMHO.  The only reason for the first five minutes or so of the movie is to establish the split from the original Star Trek universe.  Basically it was the prologue.  Then they jump forward to begin the story of how Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise this time around.  It's left up to the viewer's imagination to fill what Nero was up to in the interim.

Finally saw the movie... I didn't like the new Star Trek movies... sue me. That is NOT the kind of fencing Sulu practices Abrams... unless I remember it wrong. I always prefered TNG and Voyager anyway. Anyway he better not add Q in the next movie. I know its paranoia but I just have this silent fear that I will see someone who isn't legendary Lancie in the role.

As for Star Wars... uh... I liked it but I had my concerns and a few complaints. At least the characters weren't utter tropes like in Rebels... jesus christ... REBELS... We replaced the epic Starkiller with that kid Ezra...
