The Star Trek Movies:
They are entertaining and the *characterizations* are quite good. I like the re-imagining of the characters and their interactions.
The plotlines, however, have been utterly awful and insulting to the intelligence of the audience almost as badly as the Transformers nonsense. In neither movie did any of the villains do anything remotely believable or logical. They existed, alongside their respective macguffins, simply to push the action forward.
New Star Wars:
This film was handled in a much better fashion. The characters were good, most of the scenes made some logical sense. There are a few things that are just stupid (the monsters on Hans ship, the interstellar Planetkiller) but overall, it treated the audience with much more respect than either of the Trek outing.
I see a lot of complaints about it being a retread of A New Hope and, yes, there are similarities, but they are mainly thematic and structural. Rey and Finn are Very different from Luke and Han and Han as Obi-Wan is nowhere near the same.
