Once back on the ground, Robyn climbs off the Mule and walks quickly towards her hound, calling it to her as she gets farther away from the box.  She is already checking her maps of Nightside and finds what she is looking for.  >>Got one.  Got several to choose from, actually.  All quite close to the exit back to the Market.  There is also one just ahead in this tunnel, if you want to stop there.  I am leery of taking the box into the populated Market.<<  She sends out a map marked with the locations of the tunnels she has found.

[Sunday July 5th, 2076; The beginnings of Below, London Underplex]

Well the immediate threat of violence has passed, no doubt to be replaced by the inevitable confrontations of this benighted place…but Al is still acting strangely and belatedly Deckard realises that the mana barrier he has placed around the artefact is beginning to fail as something leeches at the mana…

A quick peak into the astral reveals that the air around the team is alive with energy, energy that is absorbing the active mana of the spell and settling on the astrally active foci, spells and in particular the hellhound…

Horror stories of Chicago and Ares fill the mind…

The moment Deckard let the group know what he was seeing, Al thanked the voodoo gods he had no truck with magic. Knowing the devil could have no power over the righteous, he approached the crate to try to stop the leak.

"Well, shit!" Isaint had himself taken a quick peek into the astral and quickly deactivated his focus again.
"Seems like we literally opened Pandora's Box."

With a quick command he sent his drone to assist Al, while he composed a message to their Johnson:
<<We have the package, but the transport box has a leek. Now it seems as if some manaphage like FAB III is escaping into the environment. We explicitly asked you if the contents are a weapon of mass destruction.
You come clean about this now, or we'll make sure this thing is buried again where no-one will find it.>>

Still not knowing what is affecting her companion, Robyn begins to jog down the tunnel, sending a message as she goes.  >>I do not know why, but Al seems particularly nervous near that box.  I am taking him farther down the tunnel to see if distance makes a difference.  He is able to see astrally, so maybe someone can look at the box to see if anything is happening on the astral?  You have my maps and I will be in contact.  I am leaving one of my drones behind so I will know where you are.  Let me know if something happens and I will come straight away.<<

Al pulled the crate open, squinted for a moment, then pulled a small cannister out of his bag.

"No more leak."

Admiring Robyn's concern for her animal, he spoke into his transceiver: <<Reckon it's safe ta come back.>>

Then, as the others joined him at the open crate, he started looking for any triggering mechanisms (besides bullets).

"Don't take no perfesser ta figure that there's the dingus," he said, pointing at the statuette. "An' if these is full o' anti-magic juice, well, ol' Al can't help but think they's here ta keep this thing contained. Blow they wads if Aku Aku here gits uppity."

Jackhammer took the opportunity to grab his bow and Ruger since they were out of the more civilized world. He was down a few knives that he hadn't stopped to re-collect, but over all in good fighting shape. This was a lot more like what he'd always envisioned shadowrunners did, and it almost felt... right. Move fast, knock out toadies, watch out for the other guys, move again. His heart rate was up, and he liked it that way. This was much better than just another workout. He didn't really have any hint of the danger they might possibly be in from the actual package, although the other folks seemed a bit worked up. But magic and matrix was their job, and at the end of the day it was the meat world that was your real worry. And that's what he had covered.

He looked back over his shoulder to see if Robyn was maybe watching. Then he mentally kicked himself as he remembered she was blind and that's not how it works.

"Ok guys and gal, bad news time: I've heard of stuff like this before. Magically active bacteria. Was invented to detect astral forms moving around and pose barriers to its passing. As far as I know there is a weaponized type that drains magic from dual natured things like Hellhound Al. Untreated it can kill its victims. That stuff was used in Chicago to kill bug spirits.
Good news is, it's not infectious, more like a parasite and can be killed with normal sterilization methods. The easiest way would be to find a mage that has the sterilization magic. Otherwise we'll need a decontamination shower with a lot of cleaning, so we don't contaminate the whole of Below.

I'm not yet sure it is in fact FAB III, but I have made a call to our Johnson to get confirmation.
Those things can be seen under UV light - sadly that is one spectrum my sensors are not covering.

Note please that I could be very wrong and its something else or even nastier."

Isaint grimased behind his helmet - he really wasn't keen on that cleaning action.

Robyn immediately sets her deck agent to scanning the matrix for any information on this possible infection then sends out some messages.  The first is to Doctor Alfred Mallard, chief of surgery at London General Hospital.  She has worked with him numerous times and might be able to get someone at the hospital to tell what to do.

>>Doctor Mallard, by service animal has apparently been infected by some sort of disease that is attacking his dual nature.  I need information and perhaps help if I am to save him.  Can you please ask about the hospital to see if anyone there has any experience with this sort of thing?  I have been told that the infection might be something called FAB III, but I have no means of diagnosing that for sure, nor do I have any real knowledge of it.  Please help me save my companion.<<

The next is to the Old One.  >>Master.  It appears that we have fallen afoul of something designed to eat magic over time.  My Hell Hound seems to be especially vulnerable and I am afraid of losing him.  I have been told that a cleansing spell can fix us but that we are all now acting as some sort of carrier and that to move from the tunnel we are in would expose everyone in Below to what we have.  One of us says he believes the effects seem to indicate that we are affected by FAB III.  Do you know what this is?  Can you help me by sending someone who can cleanse us?  Please?<<

The third and fourth messages are to the Harlequinade and Doc Pax, again asking for help and information.  The performers seem to know a lot and Pax is the surgeon in Below that put Robyn back together.  She used some sort of awakened plant to heal the Keeb and maybe she has something that will help Al.

After sending the fourth message, Robyn crafts an ARO that she places as far as possible ahead and behind them to act as a warning that there is a serious contagious infection in the tunnel and telling people to stay away.  It also states that anyone with the ability to cast a magical cleansing would be well compensated for their help.

Robyn lets the team know what she has done.  "I have sent messages to London General, the Harlequins, a specialist doctor I know in Below, and to The Old One asking for information and help.  I have also placed AROs out in the tunnel ahead and behind us to warn others to stay away unless they can cast magical cleansing.  Now I am going to climb back on my Mule and go into VR space to see if there is someone in the Market who can help us.  There is an entire level devoted to magic and someone there might be able to help.  I will search the host directory and send out a warning and a plea."

Done, Robyn climbs back onto the drone and sinks into her world.  The host of the Market offers a mark and she slips in, going to the magic level.  Here she casts about for a directory and begins wandering through the stalls carrying an ARO that indicates that she is looking for someone to help with some sort of sterilization magic.  She has some hits from people who are initially interested but back off when told that FAB III might be involved.  Finally, a woman signals to her from one of the stalls, asking for details.  Robyn explains that she and five other people, plus a Hell Hound seem to have contracted a parasite that strongly resembles FAB III in its effects.  She is concerned with the possibility of passing this parasite on to others in Nightside and so the team is currently holed up in the access tunnel to the Underplex.  The woman nods and tells Robyn that this is very serious indeed.  She pauses to think and Robyn chimes in with an offer to pay what is needed for help, be it money or favors, at which the woman smiles and says that her price would include both and that Robyn must pay the price.  Leary but a bit desperate, Robyn agrees and the woman tells her to wait, disappearing into the stall and talking to someone before returning with a satchel.  She introduces herself as Zhao Lin and promises to be at the tunnel as quickly as she can, and that she will bring a friend, telling Robyn that the friend's price is included in hers.  Robyn's avatar nods and slips from the host back to AR and then the meat world.

Robyn wakes up and lets her companions know what is happening.  "I have contracted with a pair of mages from the Market to help us.  They will be here shortly.  I do have a question, though.  Is the equipment also affected as a carrier, or just us and my companion?"

"Well, I'll allow that's some comfort, an' much appurciated. But I say we start movin' in their direction. Gits us help faster. More'n that, we now got a few people - which has some tendency to become a lot more people - knowin' we's jist sittin' here. That plus havin' the dingus puts a double target on our back. We need ta git motorvatin'. The leak's plugged, an' it ain't like we gon' go round wet-kissin' the passersby."

Robyn shakes her head.  "I do not think that moving right now is a good idea, Al.  We do not know what the effective range is of this stuff we have.  Getting closer to the Market risks passing this on to others.  My advice is to remain here and wait.  They will not be long.

"Well, can't say I don't respect yer expert opinion. Good Lord knows I do. But doin' a major heist an' blastin' our way through a security checkpoint an' then settin' up camp with our score within' spittin' distance o' the scene o' the crime seems a mite counteriintuitive ta ol' Al. An' all fer the sake of what may or damn well may not happen to a bunch o' other folks, well, that don't count much weighed against what I am damned sure will happen ta me an' mine. An' I ain't sayin' dive headlong into the damn market, I jist said let's at least git mobile in that direction. So that's my vote, which ain't crap since this ain't no democracy."

He turned and looked at Isaint.

"I wished you hadn't done that.
Alerting five different places at once is a sure fire way to get an information leak. Us being a bio-hazard is exactly the kind of excuse a certain house would need to sent the market against us.

Please take down those AROs at once and pray that no-one has seen them yet. We can't outrun our opposition with those mules.

We need to keep moving and get some more distance to the Underplex. The mall cops might not follow us, but I'm sure they have specialists on retainer that will."

Isaint had begun to arm his drone by draping it in his normal armor + helmet.

"ISaint, with all respect, I do not think that you are right.  We are like a fragging plague.  The Johnson gave us poor intel, no surprise there, but we cannot risk innocent lives by walking around down here like nothing happened.  If you are correct in thinking this is FAB III and its effects are as you described, we could do irreparable damage here and even kill many people that rely on being dual natured or mainly astral.  It is unconscionable to not warn people of the hazard of approaching us, to include the specialists that are quite probably coming up behind us.  The ARO back that way may cause them to slow down enough to at least determine what FAB III is.  If they ask, they might not follow us in but simply try to keep us from returning while sending security forces to the major exits, and that would serve to rile the locals of the LCZ.  And of the people I talked to, most already live down here and are not likely to tell anyone about us.  Three are friends and the mages seem genuinely interested in helping us.  As for Doctor Mallard, he is a close associate and I only mentioned my companion, not the rest of us.  I am a surgeon and cannot support risking lives unnecessarily.  Please give the mages a bit of time to get here and use their magic.  I beg you."

Just then, Sasha lets her know that the two mages have entered the tunnel and are approaching.  Robyn continues.  "And I have just been notified that the mages have entered the tunnel and should be here soon.  Can we wait that long and reinforce our rear to keep any surprises down?"

Isaint sighed.
"I understand where you are coming from.
I could now say that we already have contaminated a wide area and there is nothing we can do about it, or that we have a duty to prevent us being captured and this artifact from falling into the wrong hands. Hell I could even say, that there are a lot of bad things down here that could be improved by FAB III, but that would all not be the truth.

The fact is that my prime interest lies in protecting this group - plain and simple.

I've accepted a long time ago that I can't save everyone - but I can do my damn best to prevent those under my care to come to harm. And that includes on occasion doing harm to other people.
All in all I'm more worried about the health of your Al than that of any random dual natured person we might meet in the tunnels.

You might not have noticed it, but we just steamrolled two innocent guards - which might not have been necessary if we just had kept going instead of indulging that nosy guy with our broken cover.

You and the rest of us are accessories to manslaughter or murder - not to mention that we just broke into a government military weapons cash, stole a highly forbidden bio-weapon and already released it inside inhabited area. Giving a few infected a reason to wash themselves if they come too close to us is merely an afterthought compared to that.

I hope you understand why I am more than a bit worried that you are erecting fucking sign posts to our whereabouts."

At the mention of the two mages he said: "If they are that close we can move towards them as well. I pray that this is really FAB III and not something even nastier that is immune against magic sterilization. In that case you'd have doomed two innocents because you didn't wait for confirmation from our Johnson."
