Unfortunately, using examples for anything (especially Character Gen) in Shadowrun can be misleading. I don't think there is a premade character in the core book that is not built wrong. That is why I make rulings based on the actual rules over using the examples. Based on what Run Faster says, you use the rules on page 98 of the core book. Those rules state: 'Each character receives free Karma to spend on their initial contacts. This Karma is equal to a Character's Charisma rating x 3.' That is pretty cut and dried. In addition, while life modules give you knowledge skills they don't give you contacts.
You would not get free Knowledge skills, as the same section spells out needing to 'Use the tables on p. 107, SR5, to determine the cost of buying attributes, skills, and other elements your character might need.' The rules on page 107 cover everything but Contacts, and that section does not mention anything about free Knowledge skill points. Only when they talk about Contacts do they specifically say that you use a different section of rules.
So, as a GM my ruling would be that you get the free Contact Karma, but not the free Knowledge skills. Others can disagree, but they would need to cite some rule that says otherwise and overrides the Run Faster written rules.
