Need is a tricky word.  In theory you could roll everything with 1d6, but it would be slow.  To really speed things along I'd look at having at least 10 (which means you probably don't need to do more than two rolls), but twenty of the suckers wouldn't hurt.

Also, personally I like to have them broken up into groups by colour/size.  Makes it easier to grab the right number sometimes .... need to roll 11 dice?  I grab the 8 big green ones then three others, don't have to count out the whole thing.

If you go to your local gaming store, you can find dice packs of 12-24-36 dice for less then $10.00 generally.

I recommend picking up 3 12 packs in different colors. Not because you'll ever roll 36 dice at once, but just of ease of pooling and reading.

1 color for skill
1 color for attribute
1 color for Edge and mods.

I've found it helps beginners get a handle on where their pools are coming from.
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

For a starting character, on Average, 6-10 dice.  For skills you're specialized in, 12-16 maybe.  If you have a lot of armor and a high body (like, playing a troll), you may need 24+ for soak tests.

Now, this is for a standard, average game.  Depending on the GM and players, some folks feel that it isn't proper unless characters are twinked and min-maxed to hell and back.  In which case, you'll probably be rolling 16+ dice for your core skill tests.

Later on, once you've built up plenty of karma and money and raised up your skills a good deal, it's possible to start needing 20+ on a regular basis for core skills.

Generally speaking, I'm a big fan of Chessex dice, and have a ton of their 16mm (I think) dice, the larger of the two standard sizes.  These come in bricks of 12, so I have two bricks that are my standard SR dice (with my Ork Smiley logo as the "6" :) ).

I would recommend to buy a package of 30 or so. Eventually one of your characters will reach 30+ dice pool at something (usually soak).

Better have too much than too little.

I would say 24-48 is a good number for physical dice to have on hand.  I also agree with Reaver that having sets of different colors can be helpful.

I actually bought several boxes of 36 for my Warhammer game (where I can roll sometimes 60+ dice) and I use one of those boxes for Shadowrun, which has always given me more than enough.  And one of those boxes costs around 10€ I think (it's been a while).

It can be worse.  While most games use a lot less dice (like L5R, which has a build-in cap of 10, no matter what, and very nice rules of what happen should you go over it), the maximum I've seen rolled was with a Scion game with 160 or something around that number.  And in that same game my character had though up a rail gun which would, according to the rules, roll 800+ dice of damage.  The campaign ended (luckily) before I could build it.

A box of 45 small dice and a dice cup should be enough for most situations. ;)

Once your significant other, kids, etc. ask you: "More, really?", you know that you've got the bare minimum.  8) ;D

I grabbed 100d6 for about $16 off Amazon. It's nice because we have plenty of dice to go around and if someone drops one off the table they can just grab a different one rather than hunt for it.

Not because you'll ever roll 36 dice at once

I thought everyone did ;)

I was just rolling 38 dice at a Missions game this weekend.

It turns out shooting a pistol at an armored weaponized garbage truck doesn't really work.

You know, it probably wouldn't have required 38 dice to figure that out, but if spread across the road, they might have induced a rather nasty skid... ;D
