I had one of my runners make a huge score (2 million nuyen) and we talked about retiring the runner. The player brought up an interesting point. So...how can an elf, who may have a 200 plus year life span, retire? Too many things can happen.

1) Even buying a permanent lifestyle, read the books. It even alludes to stock crashes, the past coming back to haunt the runner and ruining the SIN it takes to maintain the lifestyle, etc.

2) Even in real life, catastrophe happens. Take WW2. My grandfather owned an insurance company in the Netherlands. Hitler ruined that.

So how can you feasibly retire if the rest of your life is an unknown? Especially since you don't know how long "the rest of your life" is!

You put the character sheet  in the pile of stuff you rarely use, and pull out a new one with a different character on it.  Unless you're interested in dealing with how many holes they can golf or the threshold for learning a new hobby, there isn't much to do with a character you are done with.

Well, their nest egg can crash next month, next year, or next century. The story ends where you want it to, and for an elf this may as well be moot until something happens way after when you are playing. Two million seems reasonable enough, and if they end up having to return to the shadows in 2154 or become a greeter at Wal-Mart, then that's a whole new story that you can indulge in at your leisure. SR isn't really built to worry too much about happens when you retire.

Runners retire... and sometimes they come out of retirement.

For movie references look at John Wick, or the Taken movies.

Maybe a story hook in future book just begs the touch of that old runner.

Until then, print out the character sheet, put it somewhere out of the way with your other game materials and when you happen to look at it a year or ten from now... smile over fond memories.

In light I find no privacy.... In darkness I find no fear.

Buy stocks in gold. Rarely loses value, and will only grow in value as it becomes increasingly rare.

Retirement: Check!

Hehehe...until the Sea Dragon decides to crash that market anyway.
She has absolutely mind-bending amounts of gold courtesy of decades of virtually-unopposed deep sea mining and reclamation.

It's only a matter of time before she finds assets worth more to flip her capital on. Once that happens, oh boy, even the Corporate Court better watch their back. ;p

Silly Eira. You broke rule 3 of the Runner's Code:

"Never make a deal with a Dragon".

It always bites you in the ass!
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Kind of an inside joke. Dwagonzhan will get it, since his character has worked heavily with two of mine. One of whom deals with the Sea Dragon regularly, among others, out of necessity.

How can anyone retire, the rest of their lives are unkown also! Especially in a world with life prolongation tech!

You take your chances just like the rest of the retired stiffs. Maybe your money holds out, maybe the economic collapse tomorrow wipes it all out. Maybe you get hit by a bus going for your morning soy-kaf....

And maybe the people you pissed off while making that money come after you in your sleep.....

Weclome to the 6th world!

Pff,

retire with only 2 million? That's barely enough seed money to get your own business started.
If I wanted to retire a character, all I need is the Trust Fund quality.

But if you want to retire and keep your wealth, I'd go with Mark Twain: Buy land, they aren't making anymore.
A runner becoming a slumlord or a mega farmer is also an excellent way to set up an opponent for newbie runners  ;)

You don't.  You shut yourself in the loo and cry into a towel.
