The pilot of the TV show literally uses that term for how they jury-rigged the portal to work.  Right in front of RDA.

There's an outtake where one of the actresses is complaining that she's stuck somewhere "With MacGyver!  He should be fixing us a way home out of a tube sock and a paper clip by now!"

It was on at the same time MacGyver was.  RDA often joked about this on the show in character, often saying "I never watched Alf."

RDA almost broke out laughing too. Have never seen that man break character onset, but that out-take was close
