In 5e, you have to resist magic drain if you fail to cast the spell? Like 0 successes for a Fireball?

Well you can't "fail" to cast a spell. All that can happen is you fail to affect the target. In the case of 0 successes on a Fireball, it's just off target and you have to resolve scatter.

So naturally, you still have to deal with drain.
RPG mechanics exist to give structure and consistency to the game world, true, but at the end of the day, you’re fighting dragons with algebra and random number generators.
