Not everyone likes the feel of their dice.

I for one don't, gimme the less-perfect but comfortable rounded edge dice any day.

There have also been criticisms about the quality of their casting - flash left on the edges, burrs, pockmarks. I'm sure their casting molds are more "perfect" as far as reproducing the dice dimensions without variation across many castings, but I shouldn't have to worry that my new dice will cut me.

You shouldn't have to.

I remember when Lou ran the game store I frequented when I was stationed at Keesler AFB in Biloxi. I'm not as big a fan of his dice as I was of his store, which had freakin' everything in it.

Hell.  No.

Out of curiosity, why?

Honestly?  I really, really don't like the guy.  He's pushy, bullying, and condescending as all hell as a salesman.

My 2nd Gen Con, I think it was, back in like '97, I had a "run in" with him.  Meaning that I was wandering around and stumbled upon his booth.  It was this itty bitty booth, with this ragged older guy running it.  I stopped to look at what he had, as I had done at most booths I had.  And he pounced.  He came over and launched full bore into a spiel about his dice.  And for those that know me, I'm a nice guy.  I like to be polite.  So figuring that this would be a couple minutes of him telling me his dice are cool, I settled back to listen.

And listen.  And listen.  And listen.

Those YouTube videos on his website?  Both 10 minutes long?  Yeah, that's more or less the exact same sales pitch he gives everyone who wanders by his booth at cons.  I didn't want to be rude, and didn't have anywhere to be, so I sat and listened for like 15 minutes as this guy went on and on about how perfect his dice are, and how utterly shit every other dice out there is, with the implication that anyone who used other dice must be an idiot to keep using them.  (It has to do with weight, and balance, and precision dice cutting, and a bunch of other fairly meaningless crap).

Like I said, I found the guy fairly offensive.  And to make it worse, his dice were pretty damn expensive (At the time, anyway.  They're much more competitively priced these days, as he has a much larger operation now).  Plus they just feel wierd...  they're too big, and the edges are too sharp.

A few years later he ambushed a buddy of mine as we were walking by his booth.  I knew by then to avoid eye contact and just keep walking, but he didn't.  And like me, he was too polite to just walk away or interrupt the guy, and that;s when I realized he gives every customer the same long-winded, condescending speech about dice.

Meh.

He's very passionate about his dice.  And supposedly he's a pretty nice guy at the gaming table.  But like I said, he just rubbed me the wrong way, big time.  I don't like hyper-aggressive salesmen, especially ones who have long-winded sales pitches that rely on belittling their competition (at great length).

Thanks Bull (and others)...appreciate the comments.  I have a couple of sets of the GS dice and quite like them - but you are correct in that they have a much different feel to them.  I have seen the videos...they really weren't a selling point for me.

I think that GS was affliated directly with Zocchi any more...tbh, not sure it really matters.

As long as we're talking about dice...would be really cool to see something worked out with Q-Workshop...they current tech/designs are amazing (IMHO) and like to dream about a set of metal dice... ;)

I'm not actually sure...  I know he doesn't attend the conventions anymore, but I think that was age and health issues more than anything.  The Gamescience booth is definitely much cleaner looking now.

*shrug*

Like i said, bad experience on my end, and good experiences with Chessex and Crystal Caste.  (I have two 12-dice bricks of Chesssex D6's with my ork smiley logo on the "6" face that I use for Shadowrun, and i usually pick up the Crystal Caste Convention dice set at origins and Gen Con each year).  So I'm biased a bit. :)

No worries...I have far more dice than I could ever attempt to through at once, yet still feel compelled to look for more... ;D  The IRONDIE stuff is interesting, but not for the budget-minded (at least my budget).

Most of my recent purchases were some of the group buys with various 40K players...lots of d6 now.  Actually, maybe that's something to consider...a group buy...more consideration needed here.

@beowulf - first time I'd seen those...awesome!!

Hey everyone,

So, I got some good news about these dice that I figured it would be fair for me to share with the forums.

I found them listed on the Paizo site for the sale.  The link is here:

http://paizo.com/products/btpy8f7a?Shadowrun-Dice-Set-in-Tin-Limited-Edition

I tried to order 4 sets, but the order when to backorder.  When I e-mailed customer service, they said they had 3 in stock and they had to order the 4th from the distributor.  I asked them to update my order to 3 and just send those to me.

Now, I'm trying to get more information on whether this is something they'll keep in stock, or they'll order it as needed.  It apparently takes some time to get them in, but at the very least them seem to be able to get a hold of them.

My advice would be that, if you're interested in buying them, contact Paizo Customer Service and see what kind of information they can give you about it.

For anybody looking to get these, I wish you luck!   :-)
If I took it seriously, I wouldn't use lolcat terminology..

I got a few set of those, they are produced by the German editor of Shadowrun.
Note that the ones I own have figures on their sides, not dots as advertised (which does not make them better or worse btw)
My profile picture is a crop of Alfredo Lopez Jr  Mickey/Wolverine.
