Hey all, first time posting. I'm new to Shadowrun, but got my hands on all of the books and decided to put a character together in case I get into a game sometime. I was going for a primarily hacker based character, with some gunbunny in him, and he's also a tad of a Face. He's really good at hacking, in AR and especially VR when he needs to go limp. He's also not too shabby with one (of many) weapons. I like the idea of a hacker, but I didn't want him to be useless in the meat when the drek hit the fan, so I gave him some boosts to his cyberarms and wired reflexes. Let me know what you think, and what I am missing. I know he's not fully done, so any help to figure out what else I still really need to get finished or things I did wrong would be greatly appreciated chummers!

I see you have take the Thermographic Vision quality I'm guessing it gives you thermographic vision, the problem is you lose it when you take cypereyes, so that 5 points out the window. And i would take some points i dodge, dodge is you friend maybe if you want to power game specialise it in ranged combat

The Thermographic Vision quality was just from the fact that it comes with the Dwarf Metatype, and Chummer won't let me delete it. And I switched around a point into dodge and ranged combat spec vs the leadership I had it in. Anything else?

I'd suggest, if you haven't already, taking a look through the characters in the first link of my signature; the Generalist, in particular, who's fairly similar, but also the Combat Hacker.

On your character in particular:

You want odd, not even, Willpower because stun boxes round up. 5 or 3 is better than 4. I'd probably take a 3 and put the points into skills.

You have a lot of specializations. Those are cheaper to buy with karma than with BP, so I would consider dropping most or all of them and getting more base skills. In particular, getting skills from 3 to 4 rather than buying specializations will save you a hefty chunk of karma in the long run.

Cybercombat 3, EW 3, and Hacking 6 is kind of a waste, since you have all three skills in the group. I am not really a big fan of cybercombat, but if you want it, I'd suggest Cracking 4, and get a 6 in something else like a weapon skill.

I'd think about Influence 1 rather than two social skills at 1. Etiquette is probably worth having for 2 more points.

You have no Agility-linked skills besides pistols and you have two cyberarms. You really don't need a high base agility. I would suggest going down to 1(2) agility and putting the points into skills (like Infiltration, maybe).

Implanting your commlink and having cybereyes are both costly things that duplicate what you can get by just wearing skinlinked gear. Especially given that you have innate Thermo, which is wasted by getting cybereyes, and that you are low on essence, I'd really suggest just wearing goggles, contacts, and earbuds instead. The commlink can and should go in a cyberarm, if you want to have it implanted.

Datajacks used to be necessary in older editions of SR, but now don't actually do anything as you can just use a skinlink or trodes. It's not worth your money or essence. If you really REALLY want it, put it in your arm to save the essence.

Ditto on the sim module; you don't really get much by implanting it versus just using one.

Cyberarms are pro, but you aren't getting as good use out of them as you could.

*First, you don't really need huge cyberarm strength seeing as you have no melee skills and are better off shooting people. Don't spend slots and money on that.
*You do, on the other hand, want maxed out cyberarm agility, and you want it on both so you can use two-handed weapons. Customize to 6, and get Enhanced Agility 3.
*You want just enough Body to average up. You have two legs and a torso that are meat, adding to 9, so you want (9+arm1+arm2) to be a multiple of 5. So you want them to add to either 11 or 16. It's OK if they are uneven so long as they add up right.
*You definitely want Armor. You should reserve enough space for Armor 3, and start with Armor 2 (it's high availability for some reason but very cheap, so you can get it with your first paycheck). It is really really good and is one of the main reasons to have cyberlimbs.
*Cyberarm slide is alright, but wouldn't be my top choice, because you can just wear a quickdraw holster. The other things I would put in first are Datajack (if you really want one), Commlink (if you really want it implanted), Nanohive (see below), Cyberarm Gyromount (although if you do get this you should use pistols that benefit from more RC, like the Slivergun, Ruger Thunderbolt, or a BF-modified Ruger Super Warhawk).

Most of your guns are kind of bad, in the sense that they don't really have anything to recommend them and aren't doing anything particularly helpful for you. The Morrissey Elan is a good gun (but buy plastic bullets to go with it; they're in Arsenal). The others are all subpar-to-mediocre choices (and I don't think you want expensive melee weapons that you don't know how to use either - you can just shoot people. If you do want a melee weapon, I actually suggest that 8S single-shot taser from the main book whose name escapes me, since it does way more damage than your current choices and doubles as a pistol-type weapon).

For better guns I will direct you to the characters in the first link of my sig, specifically the Gunslinger and Generalist.

'Ware you should either start with or try to get when you can
Encephalon (Augmentation) - this one's an essence hog, it will have to wait.
PuSHeD (Augmentation)
Neocortical Nanites and a Nanohive (also Augmentation).

You may well want to pick up some Adapsin at some point (definitely prior to installing any alphaware cyberware), but you can't start with that.

Based on where you are going, I would suggest trying to get the nanites and PuSHeD now, and then upgrading yourself with Adapsin, Synaptic Boosters, and then getting the Encephalon with the essence you've freed up.

The taser Umaro is talking about is the Defiance EX Shocker on p.316 of SR4A. Great legal weapon, make sure you get it with a laser sight instead lf a smartlink, then it's all non-restricted and should be ok to carry in the open most of the time.

Thanks a lot Umaro and everyone else for all those tips, I'm putting a lot into action and they were really helpful! I have a few questions though :)

1.) When you talk about the 3,3,6 I have for the Cybercombat, EW and Hacking, I originally wanted to put it into the cracking group but it said in the book you can't pick a specilization if you up your skills that way, and I wanted the extra dice.

2.) What is the difference in social skills? Can any one be used for any situation? I had thought they were each different. I just want semi-face skills, so dealing with johnsons or the like.

3.) Should I lower my base agility? I figured it might come in handy for something

4.) I liked the cyberarm slide for the free action right to hand, and the concealment. I know the normal hidden gun arm slide doesn't have concealment, but could it be worn on top of the cyberarm anyway to free up room for those other mods?

5.) I liked the Remington Roomsweeper for its ability to turn into a heavy pistol with shotgun rules quickly, and the Savalette Guardian for the ability to fire burst. However looking at your guns they do seem a bit better. What's a good low recoil setup? I like the idea of having a lot of pistols--for protection, of course :)

6.) Whats so good about the nanites?

I'm fresh when it comes to Shadowrun so sorry if these seem somewhat nooby questions

1) Keep in mind you can always break a skill group later (after gameplay starts). It's only 2 karma to buy a specialization later, and 3/3/6 is super karma inefficient. You'll be a little worse off to start, but much better in the medium to long run.

2) Sometimes you can control what social skill you use, but often you're forced to use a particular social skill. Etiquette is actually a really common one for not offending touchy people, and if you're going to have 2 social skills, getting the group to have all 4 is worth it.

3) The "something" is Agility-linked skills that aren't based on your arms (shooting a gun is explicitly based on your arms). You don't have any. Infiltration is probably the most useful such skill and it's useful to be able to do as a hacker (sometimes you have to sneak on-site to get past wifi blocking paint or whatever, and also since you have good Hardware you may be wanted to open maglocks and such). IMO, you will get more out of 1 base agility and 4 infiltration than 3 base agility and 0 infiltration.

4) Yes. Don't get me wrong, the cyberarm slide isn't bad by any means, it's just that there are other things that are IMO better.

5) Are you going to have a Cyberarm Gyromount in the end? It affects what sort of guns you will want. Do remember to put Metahuman Customization (Dwarf) on all your guns!

No: Morissey Elan with Smartlink, Chameleon Coating, Barrel Reduction, any of the various ways of getting 1 recoil compensation (such as Personalized Grip), and Hi-C frangible rounds, Hard to find and you can sneak it past MAD scanners.

Yamaha Sakura Fubuki with Smartlink, Chameleon Coating, and Stick-n-shock. It's just a really really good gun for this, because of the BF with reduced recoil ability.

Ruger Super Warhawk with Firing Selection Change: SA, Smartlink, and any method of getting 1 RC such as Personalized Grip, and APDS rounds (Ex-ex to start, as APDS is too high availability). Good for hurting things that are stun-immune, like drones.

Ruger Thunderbolt with Internal Smartgun System Option, Personalized Grip, Underbarrel Weight, Powered Folding Stock, loaded with Armor Piercing Flechette ammo (Ex-ex to start, again): good for murdering dudes.

Defiance EX Shcoker: discussed above. It's legal and you can melee with it.

Yes: The Elan and Fubuki are still solid, but you can replace the latter two guns with a Ruger Super Warhawk with Firing Selection Change: BF, Smartlink, Personalized Grip, and a stock. It has a lousy clip size, but it can fire fully compensated BF with a better base damage than any other pistol. Load either APDS or APF ammo depending what you are doing (Ex-ex to start as usual).

Also, if you have the gyromount, the Ares Viper Slivergun becomes a better option; normally it's too hard to get recoil compensation for it, but the 3 from the gyro means you can just slap on personalized grip, smartlink, and a stock and be good to go. It has built-in sound suppression but is restricted rather than forbidden which is nice.

Ok I've done a lot of the alterations and your suggestions to my character and he's looking good. The weapons and skill recommendations were really wiz. There's only a few areas I am still in need of help with.

1.) How do I go about setting up my contacts? I only have 1 atm, not sure how many I need.

2.) Knowledge Skills, any ideas for some good ones or details about them?

3.) You say get the Metahuman Customization on guns but it says in the core rule book that GMs should overlook it at character creation

4.) What type of agents should I get? Is the 1 I have enough?

5.) Is there any type of synth looking skin I can put over the hands of my cyberware when I'm in a suit or such? Doesn't have to feel real to the touch just like realistic hand looking skin covers is all

6.) How should I slave and setup my 'ware so the cyberware and such is unhackable and running in hidden mode or such?

7.) Any basic hacker tips or anything like that would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance! :)

1) Really depends on your GM. I do definitely advise having a contact who can help you buy stuff you expect to need (eg, high-rated programs and hardware) which it looks like you have. Otherwise, varies widely.

2) I do recommend something like "Matrix Security Procedures" (there's a lot of wacky security things) and possibly "Resonance beings" (there's a lot of wacky resonance things). Otherwise, it's generally a good place to flesh out your character.

3) Arsenal overwrote that; it's now a modification.

4) That one looks fine. Cascading is particularly good and I see you have it. I would have Analyze on it though; a good security procedure is "Analyze any icons you see." That will make it harder for people to hack you.

5) Look at the Holo-wear armor from Attitude. That, plus FFBA, plus PPP is a pretty good suit.

6) Slave everything to your commlink, run your commlink skinlinked to yourself, and run it in hidden mode. Then have a second junk commlink that you don't care about getting hacked and you use for normal stuff like ordering pizza. It's by no means hack-proof but it doesn't make it easier than it needs to be to hack you. An agent running Analyze 24-7 will help here.

7) The matrix and the rules for it are a mess, so I do suggest talking to your GM about how they think the matrix works prior to running. No two people have exactly the same interpretation of the matrix rules.

Minor notes:

Laser sight and Smartlink don't stack; you just want Smartlinks.

You can't have 10 agility arms. The max is 9 on a dwarf; even enhancements can't break your augmented max.

This is going to seem like an attempt to min/max, but...

I see the Hot Sim mod, which is a good thing.  But if you're gonna be a hacker, get the Simsense Accelerator and a Simsense Booster.  You'll up your Matrix initiative passes to 5, which in combat will give you more actions to do more stuff (obviously).

And one of your commlinks has a fake SIN (which is public), but the other one...doesn't?  And the one that doesn't is your hacking commlink?  Personally, I'd use the crappier commlink as the public one without a fake SIN (although you could still use that on the junk one).  And then I'd definitely add a fake SIN to the hacking commlink.  You don't want to be hacking and have someone know exactly who you are, do you?

And while we're at it, I'd think about spending the creds on 1 or 2 more commlinks for hacking, just in case one of them gets fried while being nefarious.  Would suck to have it get fried and then you don't have the creds to get another one.

Scare_Crow, you don't have to link a SIN to your commlink. The reason to link a fake sin to your fake commlink is because some places require you be on broadcast mode displaying your SIN, and you use it for that. There's no good reason to have any sin at all displaying on your hacking commlink, the point is for people to not immediately see you have a second commlink.

Simsense Accelerator and Simsense Booster are OK, but extra matrix passes aren't as critical as extra physical passes. They are worth getting, but probably not worth starting with.

I'm going to retract my statement about the Simsense Accelerator for the commlink.  It has an availability of 12, which means you can't have it at character creation anyhow.

That means you can have it, actually. 12 or less is the limit.

Yeah, typo.  It has an availability of 14, not 12.

Yeah, typo.  It has an availability of 14, not 12.

I know one of those two is available without Restricted Gear (but is more than a bit expensive). I just can't remember for sure which one--I get them mixed up a lot.
