>>>>>[Of course people come after me, Wyrm. But you do understand that rental insurance isn't the only kind of insurance there is, yes? There's also this thing known as homeowner's insurance. Also, most of the nobles I know own both the land way out where and the flat in Cara'sir, as well as one in Malek'thas, and a few others. Not counting the ones they use for mistresses and business dealings.
Naturally, I don't use the mansion in Malek'thas for my home base during runs. I have other places where I go for such things. Where I live is the mansion, or my suite in Seattle, or one of the properties I've picked up in Cara'sir or elsewhere. Where I do business out of, however, is generally rental properties, gained under fake IDs using nanopaste and physical mask spells, as well as having a hacker subordinate fudge the data trails. Sure, sometimes people come after me at home. Why do you think I have so many statues in my garden? But that doesn't change the fact that where I live is the mansion, or one of my places in other cities. Fortunately, I get enough from other revenue streams that I only need to worry about making enough running in whatever sprawl I'm working out of at the time to cover the expenses of the places I've rented as a runner, not the Count.
So long as I don't do anything to get someone like Smiley or Autumn sent after me, I'm not terribly worried about people coming after me at home. The mansion is a convenient place for it, in fact. Nice and isolated, so Shark and I can hunt until we're sated. You get in too many bloodbaths on rental property, and even with money it becomes impossible to find someone who will rent to you. Runners and Johnsons aren't the only ones with information networks, afterall.
As for the costs of repairs, I just give up the chocolate and switch to less expensive liquors for a month or two, and that usually makes up the difference. Most assassins tend to realize that the neighborhood I live in is probably not the best to be using heavy weapons or explosives in. Nobles all around, and all of them have their own security teams, and law enforcement typically takes about three to five minutes to show up after receiving a call. Using heavy ordinance in such an area tends to create more problems than it solves, and the types that are stupid enough to try are usually the ones who think that all elven nobles are soft. As I said before, there's good and bad to all lifestyle choices. Mine have served me just fine, but YMMV, naturally.]<<<<<
