It's circulating around that J.J. will direct the new Star Wars movie, the one slated for a 2015 release. I say circulating as all I've found in the news is the ever popular "...sources have confirmed...".

First reaction was "not another Star Wars movie" (and I do love Star Wars). Then I remembered Lucas wasn't going to ruin it and I feel much more optimistic.

Anybody already knows which one they're going to do?  I hope for the Thrawn trilogy, or maybe Jedi academy.

I'd like to see something in the pre-rule-of-two era. There's so much material there, as long as they don't make it a derpy sith vs jedi battle movie. Hopefully with less midichloreon (or however you spell that) garble and more subtext/intrigue. Bring back the mysterious space wizard, if it's not too late. Whatever happens, at least Lucas is out. (knocking on wood!)

If this turns out to be true, then Abrams will be helming both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. I'm not sure if that's giving one man too much control over nerdom, or just setting him up to be crucified at the whim of the fanboys,

While J.J. Abrams himself may be - and probably is - far from the worst choice of directors*, the idea of Disney doing any Star Wars films is, IMO, a disaster of astronomical proportions.  There were reasons why Tolkien specified that Disney was to have no part in any film(s) based on his works, and I believe that should carry across to anything else with a similarly wide fanbase. Disney's film-making ethos is just too far away from what would make more SW films worthwhile.  Again, IMO.



* I shudder to think of Tarantino or Michael Bay set loose on SW.

My opinions are based on ~40 years of watching Disney productions. Maybe there's stuff in them I'm just not connecting to.

Maybe the Disney execs will take a "don't fix what ain't broke" approach.

Short version, I'm not writing off the proposed films before I've seen them. I'm just not expecting a high standard.

As far as I can tell DIsney and Lucas have the exact same ethos, creating franchises that are merchandised to ridicules levels.
