Yeah you could probably mod the heck out of powered armors or an Iron Will. Just so you know... people have already built completely functional mecha IRL. I could show you if you like. The problem is that there is really no need or practical use for them currently.
I'd be curious as to what people have successfully done. While I was still working on the powered heavy infantry suits in one of my older stories, I did a lot of research on infantry armor and powered armor and never saw anything that didn't have drawbacks massively outweighing the benefits. Even in most sci-fi they tend to have more drawbacks than benefits when you take away the Plot Armour, particularly compared with systems like drones or tanks that we're already starting to get into use now.

What sort of drawbacks? Hackers and battery life?

Balance, strategic immobility (there's a lot of support equipment and specialized infrastructure needed to build and maintain mecha), cost, weight, battery life, and sometimes materials that can't withstand the rigor of certain conditions (sandy deserts) or endurance that battlefield-ready equipment needs to be reliable in. At least for the projects I've read, like the land warrior system. Hackers aren't really a problem in the real world (military equipment is generally fairly isolated so it's difficult to get in in the first place).

If you can plug them in with a long cord, though, many work fine, so something like the loader exosuit from Aliens would actually be a ready-in-the-present.

Hackers are only an issue if you have controllability over something they can access.  If the suit is piloted, that is not a concern (just like you couldn't, say, hack a fighter jet over its radio - I'm looking at you, Live Free or Die Hard).  And I would assume the military's not all that likely to run something like this over battery - you don't want these things being a draw on your emergency generators in case of base power loss; if its fuel based you can just keep fuel stores (also impacts the rate at which you can make it ready).

Ruggedization and cost are going to be primary military concerns; it has to hold up to their use and it has to be inside their budget.
