Wheels - Handicapable Street Sam/Mechanic

Just a little something I made up purely for fun. Wondering if this is really viable or not.

Backstory is a little bare bones too I think.

Originally, I had wanted to soop up the acceleration and add some rocket boosters. Alas, there was only room for the weapon mount in the chair, and that was more important to my concept.

For a brief period in his life, young german Hans Muller was a hot underdog on the Seattle street racing circuit. With his self tweeked hotrod, the young upstart was winning race after race out from under drivers who had
spent years building up their streetcred and even longer building their cars. Unfortunately for him, this didnt sit well with the Seattle underworld, who had quite a bit of nuyen riding on the outcomes of these races. Celebrating
after his latest big win, Hans suddenly found himself forced from a tenth story window of the club by some suit wearing yaks.

Hans woke up in the bed of a local streetdoc, and quickly discovered how broken he really was. The fall left him with brain damage, blinding him in the left eye and leaving him paralyzed from
the waist down. Of course, it also didnt help that the bum who had found him while diving in the clubs dumpster, literally dragged Hans, complete with shattered spine, across the plascrete to
the docs office.

Needing some quick nuyen to pay for his new med bills, Hans found himself selling his hotrod, with more than extra to spare.

"Hey doc, got anything to match this bone lacing? Think I could use some upgrades."

Hans wasnt going to be the only one to pay for this.

Interesting idea. It would certainly be better protection wise. Hed be totally encased, so only vehicle armor would matter. And the vehicle itself is more armored, so it would last longer.

Some thoughts/questions on the idea:

I know the book states that some new stores avertise themselves as PMV friendly, how prevelant is this?

Would it be easier to get into offices (security wise) in a wheelchair as opposed to a PMV? Is a PMV more suspicious?

The Adv Cargo Module only comes with grapple arms. To use firarms, they would have to replaced them with full arms.

How does using a firearm with mechanical arms work? Remote control? Complex action to fire, complex action to reload? What skills would be involved, since its technically a weapon mount? Weapon + Command prog?


I envision the char more samurai than rigger, so Id like to stay away from programs and remote control if I can.

I originally went with the wheelchair too because I just liked the idea of a machine fun popping out of a wheelchair and lighting up a room! Just seemed uniquely dark and silly to me, to have the guy in the wheelchair as the combat monster! ;D

I could go with the PMV, put a passenger module on it to raise the body to 6. The passenger module would be nice, cause I could use it for extractions. Put a manual, fixed, concealed weapon mount in it for a LMG. Concealed armor, smart tires...

So I can lose the SUV and go with either:

Both are slower than the wheelchair, and the one with the passenger module is ACHINGLY slow. Possibly to the point of being useless, and removing the smart tires would only bump Acc to 5/20.

Advantages: Higher top speed, better concealed weapon mount, more ammo, and better handling, better armor, fully enclosed, and in once case, the ability to carry a passanger.

Disadvantages: Slower acc, bigger, possibly more suspicious.

It also might be more difficult to switch between different vehicles if I so chose. For instance, with the SUV I had added a small drone rack as a sort of chair lift right into the driver seat. I could still be in the chair attached to the rack and driving, plugged in via datajack to control acc and braking since I obviously cant use the pedals. (forgot to add the datajack to the SUV unless that is included w high amenities)

I suppose I could go this route:

Saying that the Horseman is handicap accessible with the drone module "inside" instead of outside. But... I dont think I could get a wheelchair  into it. I suppose I could keep the module outside and attach the chair to it. And then just wirelessly call it when I need it. But then the chair could get trashed in a firefight... and Id probably need to drive a bigger vehicle like Bulldog that the Horseman could actually fit into. So things are getting complicated now.

So its seems my choices hinge on if I want to have the ability to drive the rest of my team around or not. If yes, I see myself having to go with the Steed as the primary. If no, then one of the Horseman.

The Horseman iirc states that you can fit anywhere a Troll can fit, so any lift and shop where Trolls fit you could go.

I think the cargo module is the only one that gives you a fully modelled hand (or whatever it is called) and raises body to the sam 6 as a passenger cabin does...

I don't know for sure but I think you can hold a un with the mechanical arm of the horseman, which would mean you don't need that weapons mount.
Otherwise it should work like a mounted weapon (no recoil, or RC equal to the body of the "Drone" and you probably can fit a cyberarm gyro onto the mechanical arm).
The really really best thing about this might be, that the PMV stays legal and you can dump/hide/leave at home your gun and be legal, while a weapon mount is illegal.
You can even pick up/switch guns at will and maybe even reload.

You can jump into the drone and use your skill + sensor to fire the gun...
The idea is probably best suited for a rigger, but you will be able to use heavy weapons with very few restrictions, while having immunity to direct spells and having vehicle armor, so the sam part should go fine...

If using feats and traits correctly you can get your skill (6) + sensor (6) [which is a load of rules unfortunately] + 2 for being hot simmed and jumped in.
You get 3 ini passes extremely cheap and 4 ini passes very cheap and are one of the very few types that can achieve 5 ini passes at all.

You probably have enough room BP wise to boost logic and buy logic skills so Mechanic is no problem...

This is an idea and will probably turn your Character around quite a bit, but it's worth a thought, also for speed... I don't know... if he is a speed freak then you probably are better off with something else.

iirc:
Having vehicle armor means you are immune to damage of the stun type and if you pimp out your armor being only affected by heavy weapons and high force indirect spells.
Going jumped in rigger means you get an easy +2 to everything and with the right choice of nanoware an additional easy +3 to vehicle tests (which is your dodge dice pool).
You get the handling on most of your active skills, which means +4 on the horseman with the cargo module.
You can dump all your physical stats making immense room for BP that you can dump into skills and money, so you probably can afford a set of drones and be a full rigger and mechanic,
while being at the damage and tanking level of a stuffed out cyber streetsam.

When you drop the weapon mount because the mechanical arm can hold the gun aswell, you might be able to fit the rocket boosters.


That's a lot of rules (rigging, drones, vehicles, rigging implants and nanoware as well as a nanoware hive, sim modules, probably cybercombat and stuff, sensors with all their "beauty" (capacity, levels, ...)),
but if that dosn't scare you you can make a hell of a character.

Why wouldn't Hans just get some nice new legs and a new little bit of spine?

I presume that the technology to repair his body exists. I find it hard to conceptualise why he would accept to stay in a wheel chair (or wheel tank)

Hed probably have to get his spinal cord replaced for his paraplegia, which is listed as "experimental" in Augmentation. Since the problem isnt his legs, he couldnt simply replace them. I mean, he *could* but he wouldnt be able to move those either.

Or possibly hes paraplegic from brain damage, same as how he lost his site. Or both brain damage and spinal injury.

I kinda figured the negative quality (which is only healable by gene therapy) is kinda "I was born with it, because my dna/genes suck" while a car accident would probably mean it'ld be possible to fix it.
Ofcourse the question is if the character has the means to deal with it (it is kinda expensive and hard to come by good magical health care).


In the end if it's okay with your gm and your group you shouldn't be held back.

Heres my take on your character:

He's got 4 initiative passes in VR and he should user his Horseman jumped in all the time...

He's got a control rig and control rig boosters, which is +2 to anything while jumped in and an additional +3 to vehicle tests.
He's got a pool of 10 + smart tires + response for driving. (System for the horseman should be 3 iirc)
+2 for being in hot sim if you need your initiative passes 3&4.

he's got Gunnery4+control-rig2+hot-sim2+sensor(3?)+smartlink2 => ~13ish dice to shoot with the white knight, which should be your 2nd upgrade.

The first thing the character should buy is the simsense accelerator from unwirde for the 5th ini pass.

The character lacks ammunition and some other treats your character had but generally has higher skills, so you should be able to adjust however you want, I tend to get equipment ingame so I have more BP for skills.

Sensors should be fleshed out because it's half of your notice roll.

And I packed in the rocket engines you wanted to have.

It is assumed that when you buy off the paraplegic quality you undergo some gene treatment or new spinal infusion along with some nuyen spending to justify it.  Whether you were born with it or acquired it after doesn't necessarily matter, because the gene treatment injects a blend of stem cells that attempt to repair the damaged area, whether you lost the section that controls your legs or didn't have it in the first place doesn't change the fact that it's being added.

The technology does exist, but it's expensive, the spine alone for research purposes cost around 70,000 nuyen, assuming a genetreatment to repair the damaged area you're still looking at some 50k to get it fixed and shadowrunners aren't known to have the money for those kind of things.

If anything the whole reason he's a shadowrunner could be because he is trying to get enough money is to purchase the gene treatment to get his legs working again.
