Sorry for the overly melodramatic title, I had trouble coming up with something that would fit what I had in mind that wasn't incredibly 1930's.
As I've told each of you the concept for the campaign I have in mind is high adventure - basically leaving the Sprawls behind for a bit (although not just heading out into the woods) and doing some of the crazy things that you can do in the world of Shadowrun while traveling the globe.
Notes on character generation: it's standard 400 BP generation, with the current optional rules: you do get CHA x 2 contacts for free, and for equipment Body x 3 customization is available for free with your armor (which basically means you should grab it unless your character concept is 8th century Pict).
I'm not specifically disallowing anything for qualities except for Infected characters - although given the world travelling dependent will probably be more of a hassle than the BP is worth. Last thing is that hopefully your team will take a long-term contract or contracts so although it's perfectly reasonable to have issues with authority, jacking that up to 25 BP of Prejudiced might cause problems when you're 3000 miles from home base as opposed to 30.
Other than that let me know when you create your characters and I can look over them, feel free to coordinate which character type you'd like to try and see if there's any overlap or gaps in the team. I know most of you have an idea of what character you'd like to play and I hope you'd all be able to pick the one you want.
I'm planning on handing out Karma weekly, which you can spend in downtime in the story (i.e. if you're not in combat at the time, or during a crucial scene where you'd come up with more dice - negotiating with an npc, etc.). This means the more you contribute during your posts the more Karma you'll get. If you have any issues or concerns about posting you can post here or send me a PM, if you've got issues with gameflow or GM'ing I'd prefer you PM me first.
That's about it to start, post any questions below!
I should note that the game will start in Seattle - don't get too comfortable there or spend time fleshing out exactly what you'll do in city however.
-
can i get in on this?
-
Yeah, you're one of the players I had down to play.
-
sweet
-
so i can post my ch stats but for some reason its saying my basic vision enhancers are over 12 avail?
-
Mind if I chip in, I've been lurking around looking for a PBP for a while and this looks promising. question though, do you have Chummer.exe, it's a handy little chargen program that I put together most of my characters with but it needs another copy to open, I'd prefer to get a head start on copying out my characters if I need to.
-
ya its what i use and i belivie marlowe has it to
-
by the way marlowe my ch is done ill send the file to ya and my contact is smuggler connection 2 loyalty 2 and ill send his details later

Hermetic Cyber Buff Mage + Astral Support reporting in. If anybody wants to tie in backstories: he owned a minor thaumaturgical research corp on the verge of a breakthrough, brilliant partner seduces him, steals the data, has a runner team torch everything and take him out. They were sloppy, and couldn't finish him off before DocWagon got to him, and a few years of coma and some brain reconstruction later he wakes up after the Crash with no SIN, no records. DocWagon was (out of canon, but common sense?) obligated to keep folks alive for a certain amount of time after the Crash, but with nothing but the suit he had on when he emergency room he had nowhere to go but the barrens. He got adopted by a little anarcho-collective that didn't have any magical friends. From there, he plots his revenge. Sky Father demands it.
Relevant Bits:
Trunk Mage (keeps the meat out of the fight)
Logic buffs to 10
Common Sense
[ultrawide-band] cryptethesia means I can give you radar clairvoyance.

Well this should be interesting, I've got a face/black mage ready to go, specced up for a more interogator/investigator role with the standard 'where the hell is he' powers.

I wouldn't mind a more detailed history of your character sure.

Windmill, not sure if I have a spot for you yet, but if you have a character feel free to send it to me - some of the players I've set up with have been pretty darn slow about getting their characters to me and I've been chomping at the bit to get started.

Character: Ron Cervantes use to be your typical no nonsense solder who who would head forst into dnager just to test himself. In his first few years he didn't see a hole lot of action due to mysteryies circumstances unknown to him. One day during a routine patrol his squad was ambushed and ron was thrown into a ditch, when he awoke he found his entire squad dead. When he returned home he was attacked by a man in a stange straw hat. He escaped but that day ron decided to go dark and started a life of taveling merc.
CONTACT: EDD DENTER: your typical low bing smuggler, he mostly is seen drinking from his endless bottle of ale and ofter is useally trying to hit on wommen constantly. He is not extreamly loyal but if your pocket is deep enough he donsnt mind smuggleing you in a barrel ^_^
-
the rest of their details i leave to you marlowe
-
Ok well here are the details in case anyone drops out,
Wall O' Text incoming
Character: Martin Fitzalan-Howard is an ex-MI5 spook who saw the writing on the wall and with a few other operatives decided to get out of the UK before the Pendragon Underground decided to turn him, his wife, and his house into debris. After embezzling an eyewatering amount of money from the LPO he and his collegues scattered, with him and his CO ending up suborning a MI6 sleeper network in UCAS and going to ground there, taking advantage of the chaos back in the UK to take control. With his loot tucked away in a swiss bank account Martin and his wife settled in Seattle.
A couple of years later, he lost his wife in an accident involving go-gangers whose circulatory systems were more based on nitro than blood. After burning up a painful sum of his hoard for a cloned spine and atttended his wife's funeral, he made a few calls to some old friends who happened to be in the neighbourhood. A year after making some feral ghouls very happy indeed, he found himself looking at his old gear and missing his old life, howerver dubious it was. He called someone recommended by a friend of a friend and rejoined the shadows.
Contact: Col. Henry Brightman- His old commander in MI5 as well as a good friend, he is willing to act as an infomation souce but won't give any physical assistance due to a desire to remain deniable wenever possible, citing old habits when pressed. He is secretly pleased that Martin is back in the shadows, beliving that Martin's skills shouldn't go to waste even if his brief time as an Upstanding CitizenTM had left him a little rusty.
sorry if tl;dr
-
Sorry for my lateness. I just put the finishing touches on my character and got them approved.
Character: Bullpen is a black Cuban minotaur and a former baseball player on the Seattle Crushers all-troll team. He played on the team for four years, but that all ended when he was caught gambling on games with a Mafia bookie (thanks to a teammate who ratted him out to the league). Sued by sponsors and despised by many fans, he started running in the shadows to scrape by and pay off his bookie. It's been about two years and he's most of the way through the debt though his gambling addiction hasn't helped on that front. He's trained in Arnis de Mano since leaving the league, because it turns out fans can hold a grudge for a long fucking time. His general demeanor is jovial, though he won't think twice about causing some serious harm in a fight. Personality wise, he's a bit like Jane from Firefly, though he's generally more personable out of combat.
Crunchy Stuff:
Melee tank
Wields either a Jupiter Taser Club or a Stun Baton (both modded to resemble baseball bats)
Can bat grenades at enemies for ranged attacks or distractions
Dmg Disarm, Clinch and Disorient abilities
Str 12/Body 10
Gets up to 2 IP w/ drugs (though I hear the mage has increased reflexes)
Contacts:
Mafia-affiliated bookie -- C4/L1 -- his loyalty was higher when I was still on the team. He's glad I'm paying the debt back in installments but annoyed that it's taking so long. Once that debt is paid off, I can probably work on upping his loyalty.
Fixer -- C3/L2 -- I've been pretty reliable so far, but I haven't been working for him that long. Possibly a former fan?
Gambling Buddy -- C2/L2 -- A guy I sometimes gamble with. He knows his way around casinos and sports gambling.
Retired Baseball Coach -- C3/L4 -- Used to be the batting coach of my team. He retired before I was disgraced. We were fast friends and though he is unimpressed by the gambling fiasco, we're still tight.

Apologies for being so late to the party, here - was crazy busy with end of term stuff, and Marlowe and I were settling out some character stuff via PM.
Character Background (Brief overview): Iris "Aziyan" Baudin was born in New Orleans and raised by her father (a skilled detective, and one of the few honest ones at that) after her mother died giving birth. He taught her some of what he knew, both hoping that she might one day follow in his footsteps, until corruption forced him off the job; he had barely made it out with his life and his freedom. Seeing her city's so-called protectors for what they were, but still feeling the loa calling her toward her father's path, she chose instead to open a practice as a private detective and occult investigator, taking the cases the city's private police force would ignore or railroad. She continued to serve the people and the loa as a mambo as well. In the late sixties, however, the loa's call placed her on the trail of a bokor who had been using his dark magic to take advantage of the chaos in the city, leaving behind many dead victims (and, most disturbingly, taking the bodies with him at times) and leaving the astral space deeply and sickeningly twisted as he did his work. Just as she thought she might be close to unearthing his agenda, the bokor chose to strike at her, but not directly - he came at her through her father.
As she came to visit him one day, there was no answer at the door. A vague sense of dread building she found her way in, into the home she had grown up in, but the comfort of childhood memories was completely beyond her. A great deal of blood was found; later testing proved that it was her father's, and it was far too much for anyone to survive the loss of. It was clear that the place had been used as some sort of dark hounfour, but for what purpose she was much too late to determine. It almost seemed as though blood magic had been involved, and varying remains used in whatever ritual had been conducted could be traced to those victims whose bodies had been left at the crime scenes. Soon after, no matter how hard she threw herself into the search she could make no progress - all her leads had tried up; it was as though, his dark purposes complete, the killer had moved on. Her search wreaked havoc upon the community, however, and in time she realized that there was no longer place for her in the city she called home.
She cast herself to the wind, going wherever the loa took her, until she found herself in Seattle, where it seemed she was to stay. She has since struggled to rebuild her practice, but has met with little success. Moving into the shadows was never a conscious decision she made, and in her head she is not truly there, but slowly they have crept over her life as much of the work that she has been able to find has led her there.
Character Vitals
Detection focused mage with a wide variety of skills, following Wise Warrior.
Essentially a Noir-style detective, as imagined for the Awakened World.

OK all, so I had two other players who wanted in but one definitely can't play (that's the Matrix character alluded to in the most recent post) and one may not be able to play. I didn't want to delay the game any further at this point looking for a new hacker/technomancer so for the first chapter/run/adventure I'll GM a character and downplay the Matrix stuff. He will be a 400 BP hacker though so it's possible he'll flub rolls - I'll post any rolls and responses in GM requests.
Once this initial meet is up you'll get his contact info and be able to get help for things on the Matrix side that way.
-
So, for Assensing on Iris, 2 hits shows you that she's Awakened, mostly healthy (though she's a smoker, and drinks a bit too much), has no cyberware, and her aura has a generally melancholy tint to it. As for the knowledge roll, Runners wouldn't really let you recognize her on sight.
-
I think that's the GM's call. Certainly it wouldn't let him know any of your personal details or address or anything, but everyone leaves a footprint, even if it's just whispers in a bar about a Voodoo priestess they heard was coming to town. Mostly he's looking for skillsets and tactics, ways to maximize team resources and efficiency.
-
You have "tall black elf in a trenchcoat". I'm all for using knowledges, but you can see how that would be a bit thin, right? If that's what he's after, the effective route would be for the team to talk about it.
Also, any reason not to use third person narrative? It's one of the few conventions around here for PbP games, and the first person is kinda throwing me just because than I have to stop and think to remember which character is yours (plus it sorta breaks the flow if you're reading through multiple posts at a time).
-
Actually, it's completely intentional. The character has a heavily Objectivist outlook, and I chose a narrative style to match.
He actually has "tall black elven magician who walks a certain way, wears a certain expression, has a certain smell, a look in her eye, perhaps an accent, etc." He also knows that you're walking into a meet with a pack of other 'Runners, and that none of them seem to know you. New in town, or new to the shadows? That narrows the field of memories and conversations to pull up, and especially with the Awakened bit. Sure it sounds thin to us mere mortals, but Invictus rocks a Log 9. What seems like meaningless esoterica and guesswork becomes an intricate network of cause and effect to him. How much comes out of it, of course, depends on the GM's interpretation of the roll. Marlowe and I have talked about it, and there's a threshold 3 to the roll, plus I get no bonus and Street Cred or Public Awareness so it's not an easy success.
Of course when the group's got a chance to talk amongst themselves the tactical details will probably deepen, but right now we're at the "establishing shot" point in the narrative. Part of what I'm establishing for Invictus are his exacting and methodical lines of reasoning. He's the "all the angles" type of guy.
-
That's actually just a combination of predicate logic and inductive reasoning, which isn't going to get you very far without information -without the right things in your knowledge base, you cannot find a conclusion. None of this is helped by the fact that Runners isn't exactly the most related skill for her; work like this is a recent shift for her.
Also, her not knowing the others doesn't lead to her being new in town or to the shadows; it only establishes that she hasn't worked with these people before. The look "in" her eye (more accurately, around it) doesn't yeild the sort of information that would be useful there (and that would be connected to Judge Intentions, anyways), and recent drinking and smoking would impact most indicators.
He could certainly mqke some inferences - her accent tells him where she's from, for example, which could be combined with demographic information to postulate a probable tradition, though accuracy there depends on what the tradition demos are in New Orleans.
-
And all these things are abstracted into skill rating and the attribute rating. The higher the skill rating, the more likely something's in your knowledge base. The higher the attribute the more fruitful those applications of logic to the task. Whether or not any of your exploits fall into the category, I leave to the GM along with the extent of what I get from the roll.
-
My point was more that there were some things those forms of logic and reasoning just can't do - and that given that "Runners" isn't the best skill for knowing stuff about Iris, it's not going to be the most useful knowledge base.
And there's no need to accuse someone of trying to exploit the game just because their character concept leaves their character not strongly connected to a specific knowledge skill - that's just the tradeoff when your knowledge skills get more specific.
In any case, it's best we just move on for now.
-
I was using "exploits" as in "character's previous notable deeds" rather than "liberties taken with gray areas in a system". No accusation intended. Damn English language . . .
-
Ah, apologies for misreading.
-
Np. Limitations of text and all.
-
As far as this particular roll goes I'd think that 3 successes gets Invictus simply basic knowledge, even about Iris; probably only a quick bullet point, nothing that says anything about jobs given Iris's limited interaction with the shadows - there aren't that many Awakened, black, accented female elves running around the shadows (or their periphery) in Seattle after all.
Given all that, the information that even a logic 9 person should pull up is pretty minimal, no more than might be given in a getting to know you description.
-
Basic knowledge? So, that she's a magician that's been hired on for a couple of jobs primarily for her investigative skills rather than her Awakened talents directly?
Also, are knowledge rolls effected by sustaining modifiers? RAW would hold that they are, of course, but it does seem a little strange given the rules on trying again for those (you can't, because you either know it or you don't).
-
Yeah, the knowledge would be limited because my impression from your character description is that this is Iris's first "real" shadowrun, otherwise she's been taking semi-legitimate investigative jobs on the fringe of the shadow community - if she's infiltrated NeoNet and come up with blackmail dirt on a manager there feel free to correct me of course.
I'd say you either know something or you don't in a story context. If you were to get an additional aid (Matrix research, working your contacts, visiting a library) you could do an extended test or a re-roll.
I am going to try to limit the 1-rank wondering for Knowledge skills so even with really high logic or intuition with a rank 1 knowledge you're going to know less than you would with a mid-rank knowledge and high logic or intuition. A genius 13 year old who's in high school will know less than a really bright post-doc at MIT about how a nuclear reactor works for example.
But a rank 1 and high attribute will get you surprising info since I like knowledge skills so don't think they're a blow-off after character creation.
-
Good news! Another forumite, MaxKojote, is going to cover the Matrix for y'all going forward so you're not destroyed by drones and automated buildings. Max, post your character info when you're ready.
-
I promise to try not to accidentally destroy you with drones and automated buildings. Anyway, here's Fang
-
Physical Description: A scrawny changeling, standing at 5' 10" and a thin 121lbs. Sharp, silver-green eyes stare out of a canine face, complete with muzzle, pointed ears, and sharp fangs. His entire body is covered in fur ranging from cream around the chest and stomach to browns over most of his body, reach black over his hands, feet, muzzle, and the end of a bushy tail. The hands are tipped with sharp claws.
Backstory: Despite his name, Ulrich was originally born and bred in London. A lot of his polite and somewhat 'posh' nature come from a somewhat privileged life. At least before the riots. He had suffered severely through SURGE in the Year of the Comet, but he survived thanks to good medical care. He suffered through the horror of Crash 2.0 and coming into his virtuakinetic powers, only by virtue of keeping them hidden from his family. However things went south during the riots precluding the return of the Pendragon. Both of his parents were killed in the madness and he felt it would be best to flee the continent entirely; 'acquiring' a ticket to Seattle as quickly as possible.
Life in Seattle was fairly poor at first. He was a changeling after all. But he managed to get some 'errands' done for some parties who gave him enough to live on. He was drowning his gloom at a nightclub when he ran into another changeling. A mechanic. Said mechanic was an agent of Jessica, who would become Fang's preferred Fixer. She decided to take him up as a new matrix specialist after her last one got smacked around by black IC. He never revealed how he was so good with an inferior commlink, and she didn't ask. Only results were important, and he delivered.
The mechanic also became useful in setting up Fang in meatspace, helping him with a drone and a vehicle. Not all missions were in the matrix. And extra security was always welcome. The mechanic, Axel, and Fang also sort of started up a relationship. It still remains in its early stages, but both welcomed it eagerly.
Personality and Quirks: Fang is rather shy in meatspace. He's always polite, but comes across as somewhat nervous. An oddity of being on the matrix so often means he more often communicates by sending commlink messages or speaking through his commlink, even when meeting with a group in person. When he does speak, it's a rare event, and can be difficult to understand due to the lack of use of his voice and the shape of his jaw.
Contacts: Axel Nitrel - Adept Mechanic - C1/L5: The boyfriend. Another changeling. Likes to use 'Enthralling Performance' on Fang
Jessica - Fixer - C3/L2: An extremely manipulative elf. Will do anything required to ensure the job is done.
Mitchell - Frontman - C4/L1: The frontman of a criminal network.
Crunch data:
Technomancer (not advertised), hacking primary and rigging secondary. Info Savant. Follows 01.
Also is fairly good at info gathering. Both from hacking and from simply browsing the Matrix.
-
Bullpen initially furrows his brow at the mention of a having a spell cast on him. He gives Invictus the once-over.
Invictus:
(Judge intentions: 6d6 -- 6 successes!)
Well, that was weird - got an email that there'd been a reply, so I went to check and saw this post appearing to be from Nobody; got another email a minute later and the exact same post is there, just from fourclover instead. Strange. :P
-
It's a mystery! Question it no further!
But actually, I'm married to Nobody. ;) He left his account logged in and, well, here we are.
Also, if anybody is interested, this is where I've been getting my Cuban slang. http://everydayslang.wordpress.com/2009/09/30/cuban-slang/
-
Figured it was something like that, but bringing it up that way just seemed fun.
-
Uh oh . .. when was the last time I deleted all the weird IC erotica out of my message inbox . . .
-
Also, for reference, 'Vic's Leadership (1)+Cha(3)+Empathysoft(6)+Result Advantageous(1)+Edge(3) roll came up with 7 hits to take the "leader" role. It's opposed by leadership + cha. The "advantageous" part is I can give us bonuses to various tasks listed in WAR! p. 137 if you're all on board.
I'll be playing it out over the course of the planning conversation, but I don't expect it to force your characters into anything. Just putting it out there as a benchmark for RP.

Good news everyone! Well, actual good news, not good news like you have a delivery to the Zone of No Return in the Galaxy of Terror.
By arbitrary GM decree - the best kind of GM decree! - I have decided that Wednesday is now Karma Day here in The Deep Shadows.
I will distribute karma based both on participation (although quality counts so don't get any ideas of just posting your responses one word at a time) as well as completion of goals in game.
So, check your mailbox, you'll have a karma award there soon.
-
Karma! My favorite kind of reward.
And Nobody ... I'd already seen those erotica threads so no worries ;)
-
Max: The group is communicating via Mindnet, so Fang cannot hear them.
-
I'll remove that post then, heh.
Oh right Marlowe. Are we using any of the optional rules from the splatbooks? Specifically the Technomancer rules for me, but some of the others might be relevant to the other players.
-
The only rule I'm familiar with that I don't like for Technomancers is Biological Nodes.
There is I believe a RAW that allows burst fire shotguns to do ridiculous damage with the ammo skip attachment as I recall that I'm also firmly opposed to, but those are the only two off the top of my head. Like all GM's of course I reserve the right to rule on anything that seems to cheese-tastic.
-
What do you mean by Biological Nodes as a rule?
The ruleset I was referring to was 'The Resonance Difference' on page 137-138 of Unwired. Immunity to Crashing isn't counted as according to the SR4 FAQ, Complex Forms cannot be targeted by actions that specify programs, even by other Emerged beings. Immune to Nuke isn't needed for Technomancers as the Nuke program specifies it doesn't affect them.
-
Biological Node as in hacking a technomancers brain. I'm leery of that optional rule set however because it means I'll have to either throw technomancers at you to give you a challenge in a number of Matrix actions.
-
You cannot, by any written rule, hack a technomancer's brain. The biological node is defined as being entirely seperate from the technomancer's brain.
As for that shotgun thing, that sorta sounds like a complete misread - burst rules don't allow for mixing of ammo types at all. Of course, an FA burst with AP flechettes woulf get pretty crazy.
-
Hmm, then I read too much into the roleplaying biological node hacking section. No worries in that case.
-
It's unfortunately easy to miss the line of rules that puts a wall up between the technomancer's brain and bionode, yeah.
-
I highly doubt Fang lives on Bainbridge island given its... Less than stellar opinion of changelings. He can get a ferry from Tacoma Port (I realised I never chose a district for him, and Tacoma sprung up as an option as opposed to Everett, mostly due to Fenris Nacht. Downtown might be mildly more appropriate with places like Syberspace, but I can't find a port there in the book. It's a difference of a few KM in distance anyway), how long would that take? It's about 5km to the closest point of Outremer, and about 15-20km at the furthest point.
I imagine that a passenger ferry would have a speed of about 50-60 (looking at the stats for the larger, slower watercraft. I've seen some as high as 90, but they're more combat-oriented) with an acceleration of perhaps 4/8-5/10. Assuming that the travel is at max speed to the destination... 5-15 minutes give or take. Not accounting for waiting times for the next ferry, travelling to Tacoma Port. Assuming he lives around Fenris Nacht, that'd be about 18km. Assuming travelling at about 60k/h (50-60 is about average down here for speed limits, might be a bit higher in the current era of this campaign), that's about 20 minutes of travel give or take. So that totals to approximately half an hour of travel time altogether, not including waiting times for the next ferry from Tacoma. Based on the travel and accompanying maintenance time, one every 20 minutes seems appropriate. So I guess that I may be lucky enough to have one there.
TL;DR: Is half an hour travel time acceptable, Marlowe? Let me know if it isn't and I'll change it in the post. For the sake of time I'll go with it for now.
-
Just a heads up - my posting's gonna be pretty erratic for a little bit; my father's in the hospital right now (fell and broke his leg quite severely, needs surgery and physio), suffice it to say things are a little out of whack.
-
Oh no. Is he alright beyond that? Hope that he recovers soon!
-
Yeah, fortunately. Full recovery's gonna take a while, though.
-
RHat, sorry to hear about your dad and I hope he gets better as quickly as he can. Understand about the posting though, drop in when you can.
-
Ouch. Hope everything goes well!
-
Hope he gets well soon RHat,
and Marlowe, the security tactics roll was for equipment to secure the bunker after we cleared it out.
-
I hope the recovery goes well, Rhat.
-
Thanks, everyone. Gonna be a bit of a long road, but he seems to be doing alright.
-
Ron turns and informs the group of a possible aid (REFER TO DIALOGUE UP TOP)
OK guys, I know recapping information said to other players in a post is pretty dull, but just...none of this, OK?
For me the best part of pbp playing is the ability to roleplay your character and take as much time as you want to do it.
If you don't want to recap, something as simple as "Ron turns and tells the others about a possible meeting to get any gear they want." would work just don't put OOC directions saying (READ THE POSTS TO ME!) in IC threads.
Plus you guys will want to work out a shopping list with prices, I'm sure, and being able to do that in character should be a rare treat since most of the time at a table you're flipping through books instead.
-
It's Karma Day again, and you've all gotten karma! This time this post is after the messages sent, if you didn't get anything let me know!
-
Will we get to unwrap karma tomorrow morning? :P
-
Merry Christmas, folks.
-
Merry Christmas.
-
Merry Christmas chummers. Although as GM I haven't had much to do lately I'm still checking in daily and, yes, Fourclover I will be giving karma - I bet you thought I forgot!
Sadly no bundle of nuyen or case of APDS is sitting beneath the tree this year, but if you're extra good maybe next year.
-
So I hadn't detailed it with Marlowe before he posted, but I had planned out the detection spirit as an objectivist heroine flying a C-45H (something like the "modern monoplane" she chased Quinn into Galt's Gulch with, if you've read Atlas Shrugged), which makes more sense with an Air Spirit than the railroad metaphor. If no one objects, I was going to post IC as though that were the case. If we just want to "play the ball as it lies" I'm game, just lemme know and I'll edit it.
-
A friend of mine made an image for Bullpen -- he's wearing more clothing when you see him, but you get the idea :)

If that's how you'd prefer it that's fine with me, but the more details you give me the more convincing I'll be in the portrayal of your spirit. Because remember, if you don't give me details that means I give details which is always chancy for you!
-
@Marlowe: Let me know when you want Fang to have arrived at Bainbridge docks.

For future reference (and because I like things to be smooth, lol):
Combat: Hank Rearden in his steel mill work clothes, Ragnar Daaneskold
Detection: Dagny Taggart in a Beech C-45H, Equality 7-x
Health: Man John Galt, D'anconia, Midas Mulligan
Illusion: Hugh Akston, Richard Halley
Manipulation: Golden Atlas, Howard Roark
I'm pretty sure all of these have wikipedia entries. If it's not clear why which one goes where, lemme know. I put a few in each category since their power loadouts will be unique.

Well, happy New Year everyone!
-
My New Years resolution is to pester the GM about handing out karma less often. 8) ;D
-
By the way, I was just looking into Mana Static as a potential spell to pick up (got some Karma and some cash, so why not?); curious how you're getting a version that produces an aspected domain? Far as I can tell, the book version only does normal background counts (eg, a penalty for everyone).
-
My New Year's Resolution is to be more creative with character concepts.
Yeah that's going to happen. Next on the news, Clockwork proposes to a Technomancer.
-
I used the SM custom spell rules and basically upped the drain on mana static. Ironically, by RAW the aspect counts as a limiting factor which would normally reduce drain, but that's just shenanigans. Each aspect should require a different spell, otherwise even more shennaigans.
-
Just an FYI, I posted this morning and then realized I made a mistake. I removed the post and put up a new one.
-
I realized this morning as I was heading out to work that I forgot to hand out karma yesterday, and I didn't even have a drunken stupor (or its after effects) as an excuse to blame! You should all get a message shortly after this is posted.
My New Years Resolution was obviously to frustrate other's resolutions. I am so far succeeding. If Fang perishes I shall propose an ex-corp sec street samurai with a drinking problem to MaxKojote as a replacement, because we've never seen one of those before.
-
I've been shopping around for an initiatory group and came across Benandanti XXV. 14 dice in Magic Theory makes Invictus one of the pre-eminent minds on the topic, and might be ripe for recruitment. Otherwise I was thinking of throwing together an Objectivist themed magical group.
-
You may propose it Marlowe. I shall run screaming in the opposite direction, but don't let that stop you. :P
-
I suppose if I put together an Objectivist initiatory group it would look something like this:
Group Avatar: Sun
Individual Strictures: Belief (Objectivist), Fraternity, Geas (Condition): May never accept aid without fair payment.
Group Strictures: Oath ("I swear, by my life and my love of it, that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.")
Customs: The group is devoted to excellence in any area of expertise, and to the elevation and practice of Objectivist philosophy. Members are fierce individualists, but ruthlessly fair with each other. There is no leadership structure, as each man must serve as his own master.
Resources/Dues: None/none. Collective holdings are the antithesis of Objectivist thought. Each member is expected to maintain his own tools and materials, but must offer it to other members at a fair cost ("fair" to a strict Objectivist always includes a profit, of course).
Whad'ya think?

Your initiatory seems normal but it seems odd to have a group of individuals who don't like, well, groups. Why would they help each other in group initiations without payment for example?
As an added note I'm not going to force passage of time on you, so when you depart from the hangar to head towards the club (or any other endeavor) you can announce your arrival and I'll take the narrative from there until you're in the meeting.
-
It's not groups, but groupthink they find anathema. A group of individuals coming together for a common purpose is a matter of each individual's personal choice to support another's quest for excellence, from an Objectivist standpoint. Enlightened self interest comes into play in group initiation, knowing that supporting one member's initiation will also make yours easier. It's also a matter of elevating a philosophical ideal followed by other members: the more powerful your fellows, the more protection you have from looters and mooches. Participation in Ordeals, however, would be another kettle of fish altogether. "Need help with that metaplanar quest? Sure. Yeah, I've done it before. Want to know how I did it? Sure. 5k. Want me to come along and help? Sure. I just need you to clear up a little matter for me . . ." Interestingly, it could possibly work the other way for, say, a masterpiece. I suspect they'd treat initiations within the group as recognizing an achievement amongst achievers, rather than bestowing anything or "allowing" someone to ascend up the ranks. It would probably fall into the "A = A" category, simply recognizing a member's advancement as a factual event.
Objectivists don't help people because they need help, but because they've earned it, whether in service to the cause or in work honestly given. Altruism is a dirty word, viewed as stealing from yourself and treated as harshly as stealing from another.
-
So, not quite the oxymoron that is an anarchist group, yes? :P
And a quick note: I posted Bullpen's thoughts in Spanish since that's his native language, but I don't personally know Spanish. I just used Google Translate, so if any of you actually know Spanish, that's why it's stilted. I only know enough Spanish IRL to ask for a beer and insult your family, heh.
-
got the impression Bullpen is already on the bike from your posts, if he isn't I'll repost

Well that's a bit more clear, I suppose that works then. Just remember you're going to be doing a lot of world travelling in this game so Seattle will be a brief stop once we finish this particular assignment.
-
Would Benandanti XXV work better? I don't want to hammer the Objectivist angle so hard he becomes one dimensional.
-

B25 would work fine with globe trotting, just remember that there needs to be a story to work out for how you get recruited, and there's the Obedience stricture - since B25 answers to Schwarzkopf.
-
Hm. I think the Objectivist enclave would be an easier fit, and less intrusive on the game than having a dragon involved. We should catch up on skype soon to hammer out the philosophy, and maybe a few active members.
-
Um... Marlowe? I thought they were picking me up from the harbour and taking me to the hangar before we went to Fenris Nacht (which is on the mainland).
-
Hmmm, I got the impression some of the team was headed off to Fenris Nacht immediately, and some was off to meet you while the spirits did their thing. Maybe I got the impression wrong, I can edit.
-
It's only my impression anyway. I could have been wrong in my interpretation of it as well.
-
Just lost my internet for a week, so could Marlowe please take over running Gray for the moment, will post as soon as I get it up and running, thanks
-
I was under the impression that Bullpen, Ron, and Gray were going to the Harbor, coming back to the Hangar, and then going to Fenris Nacht.
-
Just lost my internet for a week, so could Marlowe please take over running Gray for the moment, will post as soon as I get it up and running, thanks
I will do my best!
-
It is Karma Day, and rather than send you all messages, I'm going to hand out a blanket 1 karma for the week! Sorry for lack of pithiness.
Also, I may issue another decree to slow down karma since you all have significant karma accrued and we're still in the hangar!
-
Did we get karma for last week? I don't think I ever got the message.
-
You should have! Since it didn't arrive, I'll resend.

For reference: A visual representation of just how SURGEd Fang is.

good news everyone, I'm back early thanks to BT actually having people in the area instead of everything being routed through a call center in bangalore. :)
-
Nice! Although Bangalore's unemployment rate is probably around 3% so it's not like they needed those call center jobs anyway.
-
Hey there folks, since we have multiple mages in the game, I just wanted to make a note since it's been asked of me that for the purposes of this game you can not, repeat not, use your air spirit alone as a magical jetpack across long distances. I know, I'm a terrible downer.
If you want magical powered flight I may allow an air spirit and a wing suit combination in keeping with the theme of over-the-top adventures, but even I have a limit.
-
I should think, minimally, you'd have to have an appropriate form of movement for it to accelerate.
-
Good evening 'runners, I know what you're thinking. It's Karma Day, where's my karma?
Well, as I mentioned last week I've been thinking about the karma I've been handing out and I think that so far it's been a little high, even with the length of time the PBP has been going. Now, that's not to say there haven't been good posts in the last week, but at this point you've received a briefing, sent two spirits to do recon and driven to the harbor.
Given the existing karma handouts, at this rate by the time you reach the bunker I'll have to have Lofwyr waiting down there for you!
So for this week, I am not handing out karma: but I will hand out karma next week so keep posting. When more action happens in the posts, and I know we're in the initial stages, we may return to weekly karma handouts.
Also, to prove I'm not a totally cold-hearted GM, this week I give you the greatest Amazon review ever.

That... Is a pretty awesome review.

I didn't know it was possible to hate a type of gummy bear that much, lol.
The Karma plan sounds fair to me.

To be fair, unlabeled candy flavoured super-laxatives are a pretty horrible thing.
And yeah, given where I'm sitting at Karma-wise that seems pretty fair.

You heard the man, we need to start shooting stuff! 8)
For purposes of describing ward creation: The process takes [force of ward] hours, but it's not listed as an extended roll. Am I right to conclude that the roll and the drain happen at the beginning of the process, which then has to be monitored for the rest of the time? Kind of like making a souffle? Would I also be correct assuming that I can't use the "rushing the job" option?
-
Agreed. I'm doing alright karma-wise at the moment, considering our current progression. :P

I think Nobody forgot to log me out ... I didn't post this. Bullpen doesn't know much about wards :P

Since it doesn't say and the actual check is made at the end of the ritual that's when you roll drain. Based on the rules as written:
The warding ritual takes a number of hours equal to the Force of the ward and requires no special materials. At the end of the ritual, make a Magic + Willpower Test (if more than one character is helping to create the ward, use the rules for teamwork, p. 65). The hits scored determine the number of weeks the ward lasts before dissolving. A ward can be made permanent by paying Karma equal to the ward’s Force. A warding ritual can also increase the lifespan of an existing ward.
Creating wards is a draining task. Each participant suffers Drain equal to the ward’s Force. If the ward’s Force exceeds the character’s Magic attribute, this damage is Physical. The maximum Force a character can give a ward equals twice the character’s Magic attribute.
I'd also say that due to the unique nature of wards you suffer drain from the ritual regardless of number of successes, since as written it doesn't seem that you can actually fail to create a ward unless you critically glitch.
Wards are mainly a defensive measure and as written seemed designed as a downtime activity. If you're interrupted in creating a ward, I'd rule that the caster suffers Drain equal to the hours spent trying to cast the ward.
-
Right. Sprite iconography. Fang's sprites follow a pattern of videogame characters from our timeline.
Courier: Sly Cooper
Data: Navi
Machine: Red Savarin
Paladin: Wolf O'Donnell
I have no clue what to make my code sprite. Suggestions would be welcome!
-
Stanley from the stanley parable possibly, seems to go well with the whole data management thing.
-
There are three I can think of that I would find funny are Otakon from MGS and Kenzie Kenzington from SR3 & 4. That may be a bit detailed however so I'm not going to blame you for not wanting something that big.
My personal vote goes for an 8-bit Dr. Wily. Not only is he crazy looking and would come with cool sound-effects (and possible BGM), he's constantly corrupting the code of Dr. Light's robots to turn them into efficient killing machines instead of wildly overpowered service robots, so you've got that going for you.
-
Actually after sleeping on the matter I thought about it more carefully. Considering that Fang has difficulty distinguishing from meatspace and matrix, a more 'computer hacker' or 'data management' icon would be less likely to appear due to him seeing it more as reality. A sprite like say... Stanley or Otakon would 'break the illusion' so to speak.
And was awesome as Wily would be, that behaviour is more in the purview of Entropic Sprites, particularly Blight or Contagion. :P
I was thinking it wold be more of a reality warper-type person. After all, data makes up the reality of the matrix. Perhaps Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite (although hers is mostly moving stuff from one to the next), or more likely Amaterasu from Okami. I think I might settle on Amaterasu.
-
Oh right, and I figured you'd want to roll for the sprite. But if you want me to, let me know.
-
Just so you know, I'm not trying to get out of the glitched perception roll. I was just following what his next action would be. He received mixed information about whether he saw something or not, so he goes to investigate further. The net effect being that he's likely wasting his time and resources (another's Invisibility spell, for example).
Glitches are what make a game interesting, so I wouldn't want to wiggle out of one :)
-
The Scarlet Witch, while not a video game character, would be perfect in terms of concept...
-
Truth be told I don't see much of a difference between who rolls for a spirit or sprite, largely the performance is the same. But I'm happy to roll for your sprites.
-
Was Star Trek's Data ever in a video game? Or perhaps Cortana?
-
Was Star Trek's Data ever in a video game? Or perhaps Cortana?
Think that's a bit more "tech" than would suit, given what I'm seeing. I'm just trying to think of characters with luck powers...
-
As much as I love Data, it sadly wouldn't be him as RHat mentioned. Anyway, would you mind rolling for the sprite Marlowe?
-
Incidentally, we should probably figure out the protocol for possession now to get that out of the way - specifically, should a PC become possessed, should that player RP and roll for the spirit in accordance with how that spirit (probably a lesser aspect of Ogoun) would behave? The alternative is basically that that player would have nothing to do for a stretch.
-
@Marlowe: How many hits did the sprite get? Need to figure out how many tasks I have, and how much drain I may have taken.
-
For defending on the intimidation from
Fang Gray. I'm guessing my roll would be this: {Intimidation 1, Charisma 2, Obviously wielding a weapon 2, Physically intimidating 2} -- total of 7d6
Most games I've played in, however, don't allow social tests that pit player vs. player like intimidation and negotiation. So, Marlowe, will there be social tests between character players like Fang's Gray's intimidation against Bullpen? I'd prefer not -- I think it restricts role play too much. But if you do want to roll that way, let me know if you think 7d6 is reasonable.
-
By 'Fang' I assume you mean 'Gray'. Fang couldn't intimidate a bunny rabbit. In fact said rabbit would probably laugh, somehow. Or intimidate him.
-
Ah, you're right. That's what I get for posting when I'm distracted. I will edit it. :)

My two cents: I've found, at times, that they can be useful as a guide, but not as something binding.
-
I'm fine with cutting out the rolls, I just included them as it's a way to show an effort on grey's part to imprint this 'lesson' onto bullpen about the conseqences of cocking up, helped along getting a chance to vent off the gallons of adrenaline that have just been dumped in his bloodstream.
If you do want to stick with the rolls, 7d6 looks fine, if not I'll repost, but I'm with RHat that the dice stay a framework, otherwise what's the point of RP
-
I basically find that using the rolls for RP is great for dealing with (a) the aspects of persuasion that cannot be adequately portrayed by RP (especially prevalent for text-based RP), and (b) dealing with ability gaps between the player and the character.
-
Oh right. Almost missed it. Fourclover! Intimidation is resisted with Intimidation + Willpower, not Charisma.
-

I forgot to roll! I rolled just now and got 1 hit.

I'll leave it up to you guys if you want it, frankly I don't think it's necessary in most cases. Personally I prefer using rolls on things you can't roleplay directly, with combat and PC v NPC fights.
However I will note that it can be worth rolling to reinforce how menacing you're being for things like this. For example, if Dwayne Johnson threatens to pound you into tiny pieces it's more effective than the same threat from Richard Simmons, so a roll can be worth it.
If you want to roll 7d6 works just fine.
-
With a 10 minute interval, the spirits will probably be back by the time the roll is made yes? So I'll be able to drop the sustained spells on them before the roll. If I'm wrong, lemme know and I'll edit.
-
Your spirits will be back by the time your wards are setup but remember it's one hour per Force point - so a Force 1 Ward and a Force 8 Ward is 9 hours to setup, not 90 minutes (see what I meant about downtime?). If you still want to have your character setting them up while the rest are at Nacht that's fine.
And just to make sure I'm following the thread, you're all back at the hangar before heading out to the purchasing meeting correct?
-
Right, it was the sprit search with the 10 minute interval. Also, only counted mana static for the first roll, as it fades at 1/hr.
-
That was my understanding, Marlowe. We're back at the hangar and can soon depart to Fenris Nacht.
-
Excellent.
-
So, two questions to make sure everyone's on the same page:
1) What all do we need to do before moving onward to doing things?
2) What's the current state of the plan?
-
My impression was that we were doing a meet for a gear contact at Fenris Nacht, and we were going to do remote recon on the suspected locations.
-
I meant the overall plan - for example, are we still planning on getting a bunch of machine guns and so on? Because I know I've highlighted in-character misgivings about that plan, and I'm not really sold on it out of character either.
-
Depends on where the site is, and what we're going to have to defend against/clear out. Given that the johnson's men aren't going to get there that quickly, it stands to reason that we arn't going be be twiddling our thumbs while they get there. the machine guns were for the ogodgettingswarmedbyghouls/gangers scenario, so I'd say wait and see what the spirits turn up, then tailor what we get, for example, big open spaces, use barrier foam to set up baricade, pour on firepower till attackers are soup, confined corridors, get chemsuits and gasmasks, fill place with warp and lay down some knee hight monowire. Entirely depends on how heavy/psychotic our attack/defence needs to be.
-
As I've tracked it, the plan goes like this:
1) See what the spirits and Iris find out. Ideally this will tell us which site we need to deal with. If it's not conclusive, we just make our best guess. Without this step, we can't really rationally put a tactical plan together.
2) Once we have the recon and an idea of what we're up against, the crew will be on site to get the gear contact in motion on specialized equipment. Cue gearing up montage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q43h1zHpjqc
3) Once we're geared up, we do the deed. What that entails, of course, is heavily dependent on which site we're working.
-
See, on that basis, I'd say at very least not do any procuring until we know what we're gonna be dealing with. Don't want to blow money on expensive stuff we're not gonna plan to use. Holding off for now is what I thought the plan was for getting all that stuff, which leads into an important question: What's the goal at Fenris Nacht now, then? Is that intended to be a bit more of a "feel things out" meeting, so we can get an idea of what he can procure and what the timelines involved are (and thus when we need to make certain decisions by)? Or has some plan for acquiring something else entirely escaped my notice?
And, as for the other question: What's holding us back at this point from moving on past this scene and into more of our general legwork and such? I kinda think we're at the point where maybe we've gotten bogged down here, and noone quite wants to be the one to move things forward in case is messes things up for someone else. I know Iris's plans from here, over the short term (having, as she does, three separate things to investigate - two possible bunkers and the Johnson), but I'm not sure if everyone else has things figured out for then.
-
I thought the exotic team was going to go to Nacht, be social until we have info, then start the buy once we have Plan A figured. In-game that should be less yhan 2 hours?
I'd be down for fast forwarding a little to keep us moving. Nacht will probably be short, unless the GM has surprises for us. Then we can get into the meat of the run.
-
I thought the exotic team was going to go to Nacht, be social until we have info, then start the buy once we have Plan A figured. In-game that should be less yhan 2 hours?
I'd expect longer than that, and substantially so. I mean, boots on the ground investigation is gonna take some time, and given the areas involved is not something to start at night.
-
I think we should just start skipping ahead to doing legwork. With regards to the Fenris Nacht scene, we won't know what to do until we get info on what we might need. In addition I believe that scene originally required Ron, whose player has been quiet for a little while.
-
I'm expecting the spirits to return with a hefty chunk of data. Search only takes 10 minutes per roll on the extended test, and mine'll be giving me radar images of the site even if it finds nothing. Planning from there is just a matter of identifying obstacles and deciding on a method (it's the barrens, so pink mohawk isn't out of the question). Then we'll have a few days while the first order comes in to go over the site with a fine tooth comb and figure out if we need any follow-up buys, or something from another specialist. Assuming we're not going in with anything crazy exotic, that shouldn't take more than 2 weeks (barring other GM fiendishness).
The immediate visit to Nacht is simply to make contact with the vendor, see if we want to work with him, and if we still don't have enough info to plan then we pick up some armor, slap patches, bullets, etc. (stuff we'd need no matter what). At least as far as I understand it. I suspect Fenris isn't the kind of club where dude's just going to be chilling with a daquiri and a case of grenades.
-
Trick is, spirits aren't people; their perspective is pretty alien, so they're not liable to really be able to give us the right information (spirit limitations are something I'm keenly keeping in mind to keep possession from getting out of control). It's not gonna be that easy; that said, if Iris only has to investigate one area rather than two, that does save time. And sensor tags, for that matter.
Either way, though, we can't draw up a plan until we have some proper intel.
And pink mohawk may not be out of the question, but I will note that I'm playing a pretty trenchcoaty character - mohawk just isn't noir. :P Being serious, that's probably gonna colour my point of view.
-
Figure I should note this down:
TacNet is at rating 2 and thus requires you be contributing 4 sensor channels to qualify for bonuses.
Bonuses are equal to N-2 where N is the number of contributing members, to a maximum of +2.
See pages 125-127 of Unwired for more information.
Fang is currently contributing five sensor channels (vision, smartlink, Low-light, audio, spatial recogniser). If he's in VR, he will no longer be a contributing member.
Should probably post your contributing sensor channels sometime so we know the group bonus.
-
Gray's sensor channels would be 4 (smartlink/thermographic/visual/audio)
-
Away from his sheet just now, but pretty sure Invictus usually has 3 channels (audii/visual/thermal) with a 4th sometimes if a sense gtanted by a spell can be linked in via DNI (UWB radar).
-
RHat would probably know better than I do; but as far as I can tell, senses granted magically cannot be translated through DNI. Possibly if they were somehow recorded via simrig, but I'm not 100% sure.
-
I know astral perception can't, but as this is the first time I've taken cryptesthesia out for a spin (or done much with sense granting detection spells at all) I've never run into the conundrum.
-
Turns out I have 4 standard, forgot about my low light.
-
Senses can't be linked in through DNI alone - linking in a natural sense requires a simrig to begin with; the basic question is whether or not a simrig can record a magical sense; the rules are quite silent on the subject, other than a reference in SR4A to simsense using "all five senses".
-
Fun fact, humans have between 16-19 senses depending how you slice it. Not particularly relevant to the topic, of course.
-
Hello! I really exist, no I'm for serious. After a lengthy three-way argument between me, my bank, and my (now former) ISP/Service Provider I am finally back on the Web. Probably a little bit too much like inserting the needle back into my arm but there you go.
I apologize for my absence and if anyone has bowed out of the game because of it I understand, just let me know.
I'm going to get back up to speed on the thread and be back in-game this evening or tomorrow.
-
Probably a little bit too much like inserting the needle back into my arm but there you go.
Or getting the datajack implanted again? :P
-
More like having the jackplug drilled :)
-
Good to see you back! I'm still on board, just kinda wrote my character out of the rest of the night. Speaking of which, any back karma to award?

Marlowe: Waiting on responses from contacts from this post:
As Iris was on her way back to her part of town, she figured she'd start on at least the networking part of her work.
@Karen: <<Hey, caught a case tonight, don't have much by way of detail to work with right now. Think you can meet up for drinks, talk intel? I'm buying.>> When Iris had first gotten into Seattle, Detective Karen Walker had been dealing with a group of deeply corrupt cops that had set her up to take the fall for them, and she was smart enough to realize she was going to need some outside help; a freshly relocated private detective with a history of going after corrupt cops was about the best she could hope for, even if the circumstances of Iris's departure from her home had been a cause for concern. True to that reputation, though, Iris was able to find a way to deal with the ring, even if it did make her some enemies in the darker parts of of KE.
@Sal: <<Hey, this job you've got me on - how much do you know about it? Client's holding back, could be something big.>> Taking this job had been a favour for Sal as much as anything else; hopefully she could count on him to be up front about it.
@Fang: <<Not yet - on my way, but I might be making a stop or two yet.>>
