If you're interested in playing, and your name isn't included above, that doesn't mean you don't have a shot at getting in on the game.  As deaths occur, while current active players will have priority for rolling up new characters, some people may just die from inactivity or bow/rotate out, so if you want to play and there's no current opening, that doesn't mean you won't get an opportunity.  Anyone can feel free to post up a sheet and get put on the reserves.

Alright, that out of the way, let's get down to the character-building rules.  Characters should be made with 350 BP with a maximum of 175 of those points spent on regular attributes (magic and edge aren't included in this cap, natch.)  Gear will be limited to availability 8 (the restricted gear quality will allow for one item of up to avail 16. As normal, you can take it up to 3 times,) and starting cash will be limited to 200,000 nuyen.  All sourcebooks are open for your use.  Lifestyle costs will cover most mundane items like flashlights and such.  Most any unrestricted item whose cost is 10% of your lifestyle or less can reasonably be considered to be in your possession as part of your normal living situation.  For instance, you pay 1000 bux a month for rent and such, then common programs costing less than 100 nuyen can just be assumed.  No sweat.  You need credsicks, RFID tags, zip ties, mapsofts, a bottom-shelf comlink with a garbage OS, whatever.  That's all covered by lifestyle.  Finally, in addition to whatever other contacts you pick up on creation, you'll all start with the same 3/3 fixer/fence contact, Wild Mike.

Remember that you are not making jet-setting shadowrunners.  This is meant to be a team of mercenary-level hardasses who creep through old buildings looking for valuables.  Naturally, more than that will be happening here as you advance, but that's all about who you will  be.  For now, who you are is a bunch of guys who are crazy/desperate enough to make a living going places which sane people don't even think about.  Keep that in mind as you work on your background.  Also, speaking of background, expect many places to have background counts of 1-2 with occasional spikes of 3+.  Welcome to the bad place.

Character advancement will be instant.  Karma will be awarded per scene and may be spent immediately to raise whatever you like,  so you could very easily pick up a specialization by the time the first scene is through.  This isn't tabletop where we can crank through 4-6 hours of play and be done with a run.  I've done enough PbP to know that you can go for more than 6 RL months of playtime without seeing a single point of karma.  Not here.  I want you guys to feel like your characters are growing, otherwise their personal stories will never come out.  Once again, plan accordingly.

Background info:
Background post 1 (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=1371.msg15112#msg15112)
Background post 2 (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=1371.msg15216#msg15216)

Helpful links:
Damian Knight's latest spreadsheet (http://www.mediafire.com/file/1wu7xgjoigp773o/SR4CG_DK_1o_fix.zip)  Don't trust nuyen totals to be accurate when you're kitting out your gear.  Sometimes they're right, but mostly, they're not.  Close is good enough for me though.  Check the settings tab and you can input the creation guidelines as listed above. :)

Fastjack's character posting code (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=948.0)  This should help you post up your stats for the rest of us to see.

EDIT:  Helpful hints!  If your character can't climb for shit, make sure that they are light enough to be pulled up.  Getting up vertically will be a thing.  Lowlight and thermal are going to save your ass a lot.  Additionally, lowlight flashlights won't attract the kind of attention that a regular lamp will.  Respirators and gas masks -> IMPORTANT.

Q&A Section!

Matrix access:  Most of the abandoned sites are filled with pre-crash tech.  That means that they will not be hooked up to the modern matrix.  That doesn't mean you can't be or your opposition won't be.  One satellite uplink (p 328) should be able to provide the whole team with access to the rest of the matrix.  Additionally, as long as you are in signal range of each other, your comms will work.  That said, if we have two hacker/riggers on the team, I'll accommodate you with things to do.  That's my job.  You make the characters you want to play, and I'll give you a game.

Magic inside the CZ:  Man, this place is effed up.  As mentioned above, there's enough trauma all throughout the containment zone to provide levels of background count most everywhere.  In addition to the mere inconvenience of BC, there are still active clouds of FAB III, the strain of fluorescing astral bacteria that eats magic.  Finally, there are areas which are either toxic or have been tainted by the presence of Insect spirits where calling up a non-bound spirit can result in unexpected and nasty ghosties showing up instead of what you intended.  The good news is that if you bind such a spirit, it's generally aspected toward the BC in that domain, so you'll not have to worry about the BC dropping its force.

Ok, so I made this guy cuz it seems like the teams gonna need SOMEONE to keep 'em alive, so he's got a total survivor build.  This ain't Seattle, PUTOS!!  If you ain't livin' on the streets, then I don't think you got what it takes to survive this shit!

Name: Sipriano Miguel Gonzales
Alias: Machete
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: Aztlan
Lifestyle: Street
Karma: 1
Total Karma Earned: 21
Physical Description: Two words: Danny Trejo.  Pony tail, 'stache, pocked face....the whole package.  Only difference is he's got cat eyes bioware.
Personality/background  Once upon a time in Aztlan, Sipriano was a simple man living a simple life in the state of Durango.  He was caught unionizing against Agroteca, the subsidiary of Aztechnology that his family farmed for.  As a result his whole family was killed but he was only able to escape with his life and the life of his daughter.  Unable to remain in Aztlan, they made the harrowing journey northwards which eventually ended in them settling in the city of Detroit.  His daughter finished highschool and pursued her dreams by joining the Ares security forces and although Sipriano was very proud of his daughter, Fernanda, he was also very worried for her safety, especially when she was called up for duty in 2060 for infestation clean-up of the aftermath of the Cermak blast.  On September 4th, 2060, Sipriano recieved a call from Ares informing him that his daughter had gone MIA on a failed raid of an insect hive.  Having lost every loved one he ever had, something inside of Sipriano broke at that moment.  If there was even the slim chance that his daughter was still alive, he would not stop until he found her.  Without much planning nor forethought, he made his way all by himself to Chicago and nearly died, but after going to hell and back, he eventually learned how to survive.  Slowly acquiring the knowledge and skills to survive in a wasteland teaming with ghouls, gangs, and god knows what else, he learned how to making a living off of his daily searches through abandoned buildings and rubble.  As he inevitably came into contact with the shadows of Chicago, his reputation as a "finder of things" took shape merely as a result of the real search he has been on for over 10 years now.  With money he has made running, he has been able to augment himself to eventually be considered a shadowrunner of sorts.  Some call him a guide, some call him a ranger....but everyone calls him insane.

Oh...and here's a message for Arizona and South Carolina!!! <<while you're staring down the barrel of a shotgun!>>

;D Character sheet soon to be here.  ;D

So what's the deal with Chicago's matrix access? Is it just damaged or is there none at all? Thinking about a hacker.

Or... It's rare I play an adept, but with all the techies I'm pondering making one, could be fun.

Or... I'm looking through augmentation right now and a cyborg would be really cool.

Yeah I'm indecisive when making chars. It'll come to me though.

Name: Ingmar Pureheart
Alias: Devoted
Race: Elf (30 bp)
Sex: Male
Nationality: Finnish
Lifestyle: Medium
Unspent Karma: 0
Karma Spent: 4
Physical Description: Blond hair, blue eyes, and red cheeks adorn this European teenage Elf.
Personality/background Introducing: Ingmar Pureheart
Born an Elf in Finland 17 years ago, Ingmar's family is very active in the Asatru religion. His parents believed they were blessed by the gods when they found that their child was awakened, and they enrolled him in training to become a priest or "gode". The priests training him felt he was a natural, and allowed him to participate in rituals that called upon the denizens of the other Realms. Some of the elders objected to allow him to wield too much power too soon, believing that it would be too easy for the young Ingmar to go astray from the traditional values wielding the power of the gods.
It turns out the elders were correct. On Ingmar's 16th birthday, one of the priests had set up a scavenger hunt for Ingmar to help teach him about the holy relics of the gods, or spell foci. The priest told Ingmar that the gods left their relics on earth for the skilled and strong hearted to find and use, and the priest had placed some foci about the training grounds for Ingmar to find. Little did the priest know that this was no longer a game to Ingmar. For Ingmar, nothing mattered more than to please the spirits and the gods by showing his strength and courage to live life to the fullest. After the priest gave his instruction, Ingmar called upon what appeared to be an aspect of Tyr and an aspect of Fenris (the wolf that bit Tyr's arm off). Ingmar then shouted in an uncharacteristically commanding voice, "Mighty Tyr, I will show you my strength, and I will devote myself to finding your holy relics!" With that, Ingmar thrust his right arm into the aspect of Fenris' mouth, and the wolf bit his arm off below the elbow. The aspect of Tyr responded, "You are strong and brave! Surely you will find the relics of the gods! Go, Ingmar. Go find them!"
Right before the priest's eyes, Ingmar's wound closed up, however his hand was gone. Ingmar had a crazy look in his eye and said to the priest, "I will return!" and left the training grounds.
Since then, Ingmar has been actively searching for foci that he believes are the relics of the ancient Norse gods. Ingmar may lack common sense, but he is definitely a survivor. He has learned to survive life in the city, and in the shadows, despite the lack of a right hand. His convoluted thinking has lead him to the conclusion that mana anomalies called "voids" contain the ancient relics he seeks. Having heard that voids are rumored to be in Chicago, Ingmar travels there with the passion of a madman, and the focus of a devotee.

Yeah, that's the next step now that you're all here.  I'll finish typing up your circumstances about 6-7 hours from now.  Got a dinner engagement to get through first..  Something you should be aware of though is that combat monster might be problematic in a game where running for your life will be a common theme.  Hopefully you'll get a whiff of the big trouble before it's starting you in the face...  And to that end, you might want to invest in a little bit of perception.  Naturally, you'll have some skill points free up as other people post their characters and you work out where you overlap.  For instance, you might not need hardware if you've got onsite tech support to handle that for you.  Speaking of skills, you've got 24 knowledge skill points where you get 18 free, so that's 6 points (12BP) over the free amount that I didn't see accounted for in your tally.  Also, your active skills come out to be 162bp when you listed 164.  You might have forgotten to add a 2nd specialization somewhere.

So I have been doing my reading up on Chicago in Feral Cities, and it looks like the closest fit for me would probably be the McCaskill Family on the Northside, unless the GM wants me in one of the unaffiliated crews down South.  I would prefer the former, but I will go with the flow.

A cursory glance suggests he has the highest Leadership Dice Pool by five Dice. He assumes that, since he is the best leader by far, we will listen to him at all. His Vindictiveness will be his undoing.

Here is a logical thought process: I know that AJ was the person that started the thread that inspired Kontact to GM this game. I also know that AJ was the first person to post a full character sheet. AJ's Character has the most social skills. AJ's character should be leader.

That's just what I'd call a guy with a  grip of firearms experience and leadership skills, sort of like how I'd call a cybered up mundane hacker/hardware tech a "cyber-logician" instead of just a hacker.  Sounds fancy that way.  Also, not that it means all that much, but leadership = tactics and morale, so if you get in a scrape with another crew, and both sides are getting hammered, then it'll be his leadership dice that determine if the enemy falls back into retreat or presses on into you, trading body for body.

Another tip for all you mundanes out there, don't neglect muscle replacement.  It's dirt cheap, save for the essence cost, and you'll be hard pressed to fill up your essence quota with avail ≤ 8 bio/cyber anyway.  +1 to Str and Agl for 1BP worth of cred.  That's the equivalent of +1 to every combat active skill and +1 to every physical active skill, all for a single bip.

Wow, i think we have a very solid team. I was concerned about AJ being the only human, but we got Mechete to back him up with a bunch of common sense in case racial crap hits the fan. We got hackers, 2 characters that can take some decent hits, and 3 that can do some big damage without magic. Background count may nerf my character quite a bit, but Ingmar should be able to keep one or two unlucky people from getting downed in the first encounter, especially if he is able to sustain a couple combat sense spells on some of the cambat ready. Communication may be our only weakness, to tell you the truth. I am excited about this. I think we may get a chance to do some role-play outside of combat!

A brief history of Chicago in three parts

The bad old days
Chicago started out the new millennium in a pretty good way.  It survived the first and second VITAS waves well enough that, after the formation of the UCAS in 2030, it was the nation's 2nd largest city.  It was a booming economic marketplace which embraced metahumanity as a source of cheap labor and.. oh, well, about that.  See, after UGE and goblinization took hold in the world, most people weren't too keen on all the new pointy-eared types walking around, so they became a new underclass, and Chicago's manufactuing centers were more than happy to take advantage of such desparation to aquire cheap labor.  Other folks naturally resented losing their jobs and so racial tension became a thing and, well, Alamos 2000 blew up the Sears Tower.  The thing about modern buildings like said tower is that, what with the modern building materials and all, when they catch fire, they produce huge amounts of toxic byproducts and unstable agents.  So, the tower collapsed and fires spread and pretty much the whole downtown area for blocks was burnt down and covered in toxic wastes.  26,000 people died and the devistation was so great that no one even tried to clean it up.  It still stands as of 2070 as an area called the Shattergraves, a site full of bad magic juju and wandering spirits.

The worse old days
In the wake of the terrorist plot, metahuman rights became a serious issue within the city proper.  In 43,  the Universal Brotherhood was formed to help with these kinds of concerns and to deal with issues such as the massive pollution of Lake Michigan.  It looked like there were some steps being taken in the right direction with actions such as the Cabrini Green housing projects being handed over to the control of the local Ghoul population and a significant expansion of the UB throughout Chicago's poorer districts.  But, yeah, that didn't end well.  2055, the massive Insect Spirit hive the UB fronted for exploded out into the city grabbing up citizens and dragging them back to the main hives for Inhabitation rituals.  This resulted in a city-wide quarantine from the lake to 15km inland and, subsequently, an Ares Firewatch team detonating an atomic weapon over the main hive, sending the insect spirits below into a state of hibernation from which most did not recover.  Naturally those which did recover were the most powerful of the bunch, and while escaping the massive manawarp created by the Cermak Blast, they became even more effed up than even regular bug spirits.  Finally, the whole mess culminated in the creation and subsequent dispersal of FAB III astral bacteria.  FAB III being the bacteria that feed on magic.  They exist most anywhere in town where one might find a Background Count, and they kill astrally active critters dead.  Bad news for the Ghouls of Ghoultown, that.  Suddenly, being a ghoul was a death sentence, so around the same time that Ares was declaring the bug threat over, all the Ghouls in Chicago were making a rush for the CZ walls, tearing up anyone and anything in their path.  The result was that, while the CZ quarantine was lifted, the guards by the CZ wall sure as hell weren't letting anyone out.  So the CZ stagnated into its current incarnation, a completely trashed wasteland ruled over by warlords and ethnic gangs.

The not quite as shitty current days

Well, over ten years after the quarantine was lifted and the bug-hunts mostly dried up, there has been a not-insignificant push towards reclaiming Chicago.  After all, middle-American warlords do have a shelf-life, and a sometimes-civilized nation only brooks so much foolishness.  So, the outside world is pushing inwards on the Chicago wasteland, in an attempt to secure its  essential ports and prime real estate.  Your group is part of that inward movement.  Working from just south of O'Hare, where Ares has most of their local interests, your regular jaunt into the downtown core involves bribing your way past several checkpoints with everything from whiskey and antibiotics to freshly cloned blood supplies.  Once there, instead of scavenging blindly though buildings torn through for over ten years, you're after specific objects which your friendly fixer and coordinator Wild Mike has sniffed out or been hired to bring back.

Functional info for living or working in the CZ

The Conditions:  There's a difference between a place which hasn't been kept up for 15 years and a place which has been continuously trashed for 15 years.  Chicago is the latter.  First off, let's take a look at the wall.  The containment zone wall, stretching for over 50km, was formed in a little over a month.  How did a weak, inept government like that of the UCAS manage this amazing feat of engineering?  They blew up all the buildings along the perimeter and used the rubble to form a wall.  The cleared out area from the destroyed buildings even made for some good open ground to shoot anyone trying to escape.  Welcome to the CeeZee, folks.  There's basically no power in the Zone as well, since the site of the atomic blast, Cermak, was the local power plant.  Luckily for residents, there is running water, but it hasn't been maintained, and leaks will fairly quickly result in serious destruction of property.  Therefore, most buildings have had their mains turned off by one faction or another, usually the Black Crescent, and so people will go to a designated spot for water, run by the local gangs, and fill up buckets for their daily ration.  Food is equally scarce, with arable land at a premium after the pure tonnage of KE IV insecticide sprayed by Ares in an earlier attempt to kill bug spirits.  Most buildings will be covered with personal gardens, and those who can consistently produce crops are quite valued in the community.  Don't be surprised if you see a burro or two, since bio-fuels are so costly that even the most organized raider gangs, like the Horde, have a hard time keeping their vehicles running.
A little look into the Special Period (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Period) in Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1721584909067928384#) might give you an idea of what happens to a modern culture which is suddenly denied the conveniences of electricity and fossil fuels.  Just imagine that situation, but with a lot less cooperation and a lot more guns...  Also trolls and giant bug-creatures that want to eat your soul.  Okay, so it's not so similar.  Some areas did manage that sort of cohesive community survival instinct though.

The Locals:  As you might have surmised from the use of Capital Letters to describe Some Groups up above, there are a significant number of factions running around in those roughly 375 square kilometers of the Zone.
The Human Brigade isn't particularly tough to deal with, despite their Humanis stance.  They don't particularly harass metas, so long as those metas are in the process of leaving.  They have a separatist-type belief on race and a strong sense of community.  Just watch out for their patrols.  Everyone in the zone knows that global Humanis chapters send kids to train in urban warfare with the Brigade, and they form kill squads to go out and tangle with other local gangs.
The Horde is slightly less stable in its dealings.  Consisting of a collection of Ork and Troll gangs, there is no real central leadership, so who you deal with on Hoard turf is a matter of where you are.  It's quite possible to have good relations with one Hoard gang, but get shot at for waving to another.  Much less community spirit is seen in hoard turf, leaving the general populace there fractured and fending for themselves if they don't join up.  Hoard riders are generally veteran raiders who push out into other communities and into the Corridor between the CZ and the sub-sprawls of living Chicago.
The Union is another collection of gangs, but this time, not divided on racial loyalties.  They control a lot of action in the Corridor and nearby waterways.  Speaking of water, the Union itself is in the water business, since they've pretty much based their power around their uncontested control of the local water treatment plant.  So, rather than trying to squeeze the roads like the Hoard does, they squeeze the locals for a supply of fresh water.  They have a reputation as being generally moral for a pack of gangs run by a tyrant.
The Destroyers are as the name would suggest.  They're like the nihilistic thrill-kill biker gangs of the Seattle sprawl, but turned up to 11 and with more than three times as many members.  A traveling parade of death that sprang out of the CZ when the quarantine fell and now travels the Corridor doing as they please.  Pretty much the only thing that could make them worse would be if they were actually working with the bugs.
The Chicago Anarchist Collective consists of two basic groups, The ABC or Anarchist Black Crescent, who run medical supplies and help communities maintain self-sufficiency, and The Black Star which is a loose collection of old-school anarchist Shadowrunners who make it their business to fight off corporate advancement into the Zone.  While the ABC is generally accepted by the communities of the area, the Black Star is almost a boogy-man contingent which has so far kept the logos of the AAAs out of Chicago.

Naturally, there's more to Chicago and the CZ than these groups, however that is more specialized knowledge for those of you with a bit of local Knowledge Skills, and will be given to you as appropriate.  This is simply the kind of info that can be gleaned from a 15 minute conversation with anyone familiar with the CZ and surrounding areas.  In other words, everyone knows this shit.

Buying your way in a Post-nuyen economy:  Naturally, when you're cut off from the rest of the world, money is only good for kindling, and digital money isn't even good for that.  As such, the CZ is a barter town... except with out the Master-blaster vs. Tina Turner thing.  Well.. maybe a little of that.  But still, it's only goods for goods and favors for favors in Chicago's shitty city center, though, sometimes you can buy favors.  One of the northside gangs that's spilled out into the Corridor, the True Chicagoans has implemented a form of currency which has taken hold in most of the area.  The currency is called Hours, and is more of a way to barter services rather than goods.  You need a guy to watch your van for a couple hours, pay him in Hours..  Or canned meat.. or phosphorous for cooking betameth.. it's not really all that hard to grasp.
Most of the city's income comes from smugglers and illegals labs setting up in town.  Criminal types will fly in raw materials, stripped-down guns and precursor chemicals, then they'll assemble cook and build all the forbidden gizmos, bombs and military-grade firearms the shadows can hold.  Naturally, these operations are well guarded and well hidden, since there's a whole world of people who'd want to put a stop to their operations.

Oh, no.  These links aren't for personal use.  They're used to set up a digital net around your target location.  Sort of like a shark cage in the digital ether.  Telematics Infrastructure software is used by corps in order to keep track of all the signals within their borders.  You'll be using it to try and maintain watch over the ground floors of buildings while you're creeping around 40 stories up.

Cage goes in the CZ
Runners go in the cage.

Do remember though, I want you guys to come up with some of your own security measures and whatnot too.  Your biggest fear should be getting stuck in the top floors of a crumbling building while 40-60 gangers below you try and starve you out.  Well, scratch that, your biggest fear should be bugs, but your most common fear should be getting cornered up some building like a stuck cat.

Alright.  Quick announcement.
Rather than trying to make the Restricted gear quality a % of the starting availability, I'm just going to do it up basic math style.  It normally lets you get one item 8 availability higher than your starting cap (20-12=8,) so that's what it'll do here.
The Restricted Gear quality from Runners Companion allows one item of availability up to 16 (8+8=16.)  Do remember though that this is a quality so whatever you get with it is supposed to be quite significant to your character.  That's an item/implant/weapon with a story behind it and jealous eyes watching it.

You know what, Inca? I think that rule alone is why so many complaints have been made about possession mages. The fact that the quality doesn't specifically state what a normal or abnormal weapon is leaves a lot of room for player exploitation and GM confusion. Of course, if you wanna play a possession mage, don't let me be your GM. I'll roll a d6 and on a 6 decide the spirit wants to be set free and kills itself... and the possession mage in the process. And I'll also consider sticks fallen from a tree abnormal weapons. I mean seriously. Who would normally attack a spirit with a stick? If someone did in my game, that spirit would be toast. Guess that's why noone asks me to GM...

While not really involved here, just my two cents: In nearly every system i know, normal weapon damage is the usual physical damage dealt by a hitting weapon. A flamethrower would do fire damage, so this should actually be no normal weapon damage (while of course there are such things like immunity to non-magical fire, but that would also shield against fire as elemental sideeffect of a spell).

By the way, any sensible runner who visits the CZ should bring some insecticides with him - hoping never to need them *smile*

I find this whole thing rather interesting and would like to join, if i had more time (and if i was sure that i get everything right playing in English)

If i wasn´t to write this here, please tell me, and sorry, if my English sounds a bit odd, but i usually apeak and write in German.

Spells are very viable, most of the good ones ignore armor, or are defended a stat other than Body.  The ones that will really kick a mages ass usually have some carrier, like a fireball or toxic wave.  Plus spells always work, unlike bullets against, say, INSECT SPIRITS.

You also gotta remember how fast combat usually is in Shadowrun, a combat mage usually only has to chuck a spell or two at most in a firefight before it is over.  If he ain't built to handle that kinda mojo, he ain't built right.

Well, it won't bypass ItNW, but it will still halve their armor.  So, a rating 6 spirit which would normally ignore any damage below 12 would only ignore damage below 6 from a weapon like the blazer that halves armor.  So, basically, with the Blazer's 6P base damage, you'd be able to put a hurting on any spirit of force 7 or lower with only a single net hit.  Not shabby.  That and you can target up to 3 guys with a single blast of flame.  Just watch out you don't burn down a building around you...

And spells, particularly direct combat spells, are massively deadly.  1) they're only resisted with a person's willpower, and counterspelling if they have any, and any damage done is damage done.  No soak roll at all.  It completely bypasses armor.  Powerbolts can blow up tanks.

Post by: Junkrig on <02-04-12/1330:35>
I'd love to get in the game and pickup Jack's character. I rethought him a bit to fit the team's needs but still maintain everything he's established IC so far. A few non-standard items, but they're mostly role playing related, so hopefully shouldn't be an issue. I tried to fix a couple of availability errors I came across (like alphaware wired reflexes, Avail:9) in the old charsheet. I'm happy to do up a proper bg, and char sketch.

Awesome game so far! I've loved catching up and reading the past year+ of story you've all written.

I tried to fix a couple of availability errors I came across (like alphaware wired reflexes, Avail:9) in the old charsheet. I'm happy to do up a proper bg, and char sketch.

Awesome!  I'm hoping to get this hopping again, but I'm in kind of a heavy work period right now.  2 weeks from now, I'll be back to doing regular posts err day.

As to alpha wires, if you don't think it fits the game, that's cool, but there's no increased availability on alpha/beta/delta gear.  That's a popular house rule, but not a hard rule.  The increased cost is the only thing, mechanically.

I'll take a quick look at your changes and then we can work out how to re-introduce the character over pm. :)

I was wondering what happened to you Kontact, believe me I understand the work thing, I was at work more than I ever have been the last couple of weeks, if you don't count military deployments.

I am encouraged that you are will to let someone new in again, not only to finish this story but to keep playing.  Digger is just about the only gaming I do right now so I am not giving up on him.

Cool!  Really excited to pick this character up and join the game. Sorry for the delayed response, I was out of town for a few days for school.  I will shoot you a pm Kontact and should be around to discuss ideas pretty much any time. I think I can post about once a day but not much more than that (unless everyone happened to be posting in the PST evenings).

I don't know enough about Chicago or what Jack's previous background was to say whether they fit or not, just wasn't aware of the house rule. No matter, the 11,000¥ was better spent on the upgraded commlink, etc. Is there a compendium of common house rules we're running with I can reference? If not, no problem, I'm fairly easy and happy to pick it up as we go along. Much more in it for the story than the mechanics.  I just picked up a copy of Feral Cities so I'll try and familiarize myself with the CeeZee a little more and I'll try and read through the last half of the OOC thread before things pick up. Glad to hear everyone's still excited to run.  ;)

Just checking if you still have a free spot and would like one more player.

Not a priority, but i know most of you from other games and this seems a good one so.

If you do i would like to create a Character, as in my opinion i could never play the character like the player intended him, it's much more of a challenge, but this is not always bad, is it?

I try to go by the book as much as possible to keep everyone on the same page regarding a character's capabilities.  All rules clarifications and house rules should be included in the character creation rules or will be mentioned in the OOC thread before they come into play.  I'll let you know if something you try to do goes soundly against world-logic, such as trying to smash through a reinforced door with a jacked up 40-pound robot. ;)

As far as a commlink goes, the whole of Chicago is a massive dead zone.  Without a satellite dish and a clear sky, it's going to be a wired-only matrix.  That's not to say that you can't run a commlink on the old wired LTG/networks where they're still in service, just, don't expect it to be too helpful in the wasteland.

Even with Chicago being a dead zone, there's nothing preventing us from setting up our own mesh networks and tacnets, or hacking into others we come across, correct? I mean as long as our signal strength is sufficient to bounce from relay to relay, we should be good for running our own networks, right?  I guess I was making the assumption that despite the area being a dead zone we'd still probably be running into other private mesh networks or folks with commlinks from time to time in the developing locales. I mean, I'm guessing most stuff is signal 2-3 and in the under 1 km range, but are folks like the Mafia and ABC and the Destroyers not running their own networks? Feel free to not answer that and let us find out. That's just what I'd assumed given the world background as I'd read it so far.

I'll let you know if something you try to do goes soundly against world-logic, such as trying to smash through a reinforced door with a jacked up 40-pound robot. ;)
Thanks for that! I didn't realize that increased availability for higher grade 'ware wasn't in the core rules. Hope I don't regret not taking the "common sense" quality. Full disclosure: I'm still learning all the SR4 rules. I grew up on SR2, but never really liked the way SR3 had changed things up so I pretty much stopped playing. Only found SR4 recently, and so far I'm loving the SR4 rules and how the game has evolved. I have SR4A, RC, UW, SM, AS, AU, and just picked up Feral Cities and WAR, so feel free to tell me to RTFM if I get something wrong. I haven't played PbP before, but I used to play on the old Shadowrun Seattle MUSH way back in the last century, so I get the basic principle, and the pace of this game fits my life nowadays way better.

I'm going to try and do all the characters, figured I'd start with mine and Digger's. Not sure if I got him as you've imagined him, but couldn't find too much physical description to go off of ;) Just pretend they both look a little more badass and a little less cartoonish.

Here's my best Danny Trejo look-alike. Course the real Danny Trejo actually has dermal sheathing so he doesn't have to wear so much form fitting body armor.....

Devoted, con Ruckus 2.0.

Figured Devoted's exterior gear was a little sparse on account of the full body condom he's wearing, so I thought I'd try and squeeze a bit more into the picture.

Very cool pics now that I can finally see them.  I couldn't see them at work.

Slight quibble, the Axe is less a willowy hatchet and more of a two headed beast of a killing cleaver.  ;)

Good feedback - that's a way better description than I found in the core rules:
Combat Axe: This two-handed tungsten alloy axe typically comes with a spring-loaded thrusting point concealed in the handle.

Updated his mugshot with a double-bladed axe of badassery instead of the salvaged fire-axe of lameness. Hopefully I didn't get too medieval. ;)

Still trying to get the hang of vector drawing with Inkscape. I'll probably try and clean all of these up a little more, and then once I finish up Gardener and the ghosts of CodeMonkey and Ruckus I'll try and post a cleaned up group shot. Any appearances feedback is welcome - I'm just havin' fun drawing since I haven't had much of an excuse to do it for a while.

Edit: Actually, when you say cleaver do you mean it has flat edged blades? Like this only with a longer handle and shorter blades?

Nah, you pegged it solid on the second go.  Whenever I think of the Combat Axe that is the style I figure it for, rather medieval.  I would guess by 2075 they would have updated and streamlined it some, but I figure anybody actually carrying one would want the intimidation and style of going old school with it.

Do pardon me for not reading through 5 pages to find out for myself, but I was wondering if recruitment is still active?  happen to have played my fair share of PbP games (on and off with the business of my lie for the past, oh, 8 years or so) and damned if Shadowrun isn't my 2nd favourite game system out there (I just love Serenity's dice system so much!). One thing I'd like from both of you is an idea as to why these characters would be seeking high-risk/high-reward work in the worst place on earth.

Chicago is a hellscape that eats up entire Firewatch teams.
What special reason would your character have to be there?
Title: Re: [OOC] Chicago Depths: Open Recruitment and Game info thread
Post by: SeriousOne338 on <03-04-12/1559:55>
Stark’s a simple character he comes from San Francisco having lived through the occupation. Part of a resistance cell operating out of Oakland. It was here that he learned his combat skills, attacking from the shadows trying to win back San Francisco. It was during one of these raids where his team was killed. Captured and questioned then detained. After two weeks he was released the occupying government decided to release that he was a collaborator. After a single attempt on his life by those he once called family he fled the conflict zone making his way to Seattle, where he had another close call with another group of resistance fighters. So for the last year he’s been on the run from those that remember he was a resistance fighter, that how he found his way to Chicago. Being low on funds Stark’s willing to take suicide missions to make money to get out of the country and find a place to settle down.

Also I have a Rigger that might work better.

That character seems like a good fit for the area.  If you wanted to go for a rigger as a better fit for the team, that's also cool.  I'd be fine with taking a Big Regret, Enemy or Bad Rep neg quality to represent the mark of a traitor hanging over his head, even if the actual treason was imagined.

Hey folks, I got tired of always getting stuck as the game master with my local circle and figured that I wanted to play so bad that I'd settle for PbP. The idea of playing in Chicago is something of a novelty to me (I hadn't read Feral Cities and always assumed going to Chi-Town was pretty much a death sentence anyway). I've been playing Shadowrun since 2E (the Disco Dwarf thing is a holdover from an old 2nd ed. game) and I love the fourth edition... except, well, I never get to actually PLAY it.

So as I was saying (sorry, I'm a bit verbose, don't expect 2-line posts from me), this game looks pretty neat. I just read through the whole OOC part (I avoided the IC part to prevent metagaming on my part, should I join) and built a character. I have only a few questions, however (I worked as a troubleshooter for video games and as a teacher, so yeah, sorry for the truckload of questioning).

Those should pretty much cover everything I can think of. Here's a (not so) brief view of my character's backstory, and incidentally a cue as to my personal writing skills:

Gerhardt was born in a small city in northern Germany some thirty years ago, or as close to it as to matter not. His parents would commute to work in Hannover everyday, leaving their young son to explore on his own: truth be told, he probably missed more days of school than he attended, at least until he joined local sports team to help him channel his extra energy. And energy he had: whether it was his uncanny reflexes to dodge a football tackle or his ability to summon strength for that decisive homerun at the baseball court, Gerhardt began to evidence signs that would ring bells to any parents that bothered checking in on their kids. Since his own didn't, it was a shaman attending a match that finally took note of the budding adept. He was 15, on another continent a dragon was running for presidency, and being "gifted" meant being part of the "cool new kids".

Gunnar, the shaman, approached Gerhardt carefully. Through cautious questioning, he confirmed that the youth was as-of-yet untrained in any way. The old man escorted the teen home that day and tried to explain the situation to his wage slave parents. Most of it barely registered as prejudice-driven fear made them distrustful of both shaman and son, but they eventually conceded that formal training was better than none at all, and Gunnar was offering it freely, after school hours. Hell, who'd refuse such an opportunity?

The "shaman" turned out to be the gode of small a circle of Ásatru magicians, and Gerhardt's mind was quickly filled with the stories of the heroes of yore: in his head, he had already become the next Sigurd (needless to say, that didn't help his school attendance). The circle exploited the teen's desire to measure himself to mythological "monsters" and quickly took him along on reagent-collecting trips, where his physical skills proved helpful in taking down the paracritters required for the various focus formulae they used. By his 21st birthday, Gerhardt was a fairly accomplished talislegger. He had also caught the eye of Freya, a mage and the daughter of one of the circle's member, with whom he started dating. That was in 2063.

A year later, Crash 2.0 wiped most of their savings, their SINs, and killed Gerhardt's parents (well, they're still hooked up on life support somewhere, but after assensing their soulless husks, Gerhardt knew better). Winternight's apocalyptic gambit damaged the public's view of Ásatru believers at large, and the circle collapsed when old man Gunnar was murdered by grief-stricken haters seeking to lash out at someone for the death of their loved ones, the loss of their identity, or just plain bigotry (frankly, they didn't take the time to explain as they stoned the old mage with bricks and pieces of the pavement). Freya and Gerhardt hid at the edge of  Berlin's shadows, taking on a life of shadowrunning. Their talents made them valuable, and the warrior adept's expertise at tackling paranormal threats meant a steady stream of jobs. Things went well for a year or two, but as it turns out, some of the paras that Gerhardt was paid to hunt happened to feel the same way about losing their loved ones as they did. In an act of retaliation, a banshee assaulted Freya, draining her of some of her essence. The Infected's sadistic urge to draw out the act saved the girl's life as a Guardian spirit quickly fetched her lover, then assisted in dispatching the creature, but the damage was done, and Freya had nearly lost all of her magical potential. Worse yet, a few calls and searches uncovered that the Banshee was part of a larger organization of similar night creatures, and it would seem Gerhardt had been marked to suffer for the rest of his life rather than have a quick death.

The only wise move was to move out. Burning out most of their savings and all of their local contacts and favors, they took the bare minimum and shipped out to Chicago, figuring the possibly lingering FAB III bacteria would deter any pursuer. Freya and Gerhardt have been eking out a life of survival ever since. Despite having lost a lot, she remains an accomplished talismonger, and Gerhardt is more than willing to go out and bring back what is needed for her to ply her trade. Of course, given Gerhardt's "social skills", he quickly pissed off some locals when he refused to give ground, and the Destroyers are a bit on the vindicative side so Gerhardt will need to be careful not to allow them to follow him home from now on. They're no banshees, but Freya's no warrior either, and a street gang kicking down the door would be bad news for everyone.

  • For Adepts, since I plan on playing one, do you use the optional "Adepts and Geasa" rule (Street Magic, p.31, "Tweaking the rules")?
  • Do you use the Advanced Lifestyle system (Runner's Companion, p.145-169)?
  • Even though it is availability 9, I would guess that in an area such as CZ the Chemical Protection armor mod should still be fairly common; can it be taken?
  • From what I've read, I've been led to believe we receive a free fixer (Mike, I think? read it hours ago and it's now 3:30 am), am I correct and if so what are its ratings?
  • How much bookkeeping is required on the players' parts (for example, in games I run, I usually don't bother counting regular ammo, only special ones)?
  • How is dice rolling handled (again, I didn't peek at the IC thread)? Do you trust your players to roll and post an action, or must the action be queried and the dices rolled/approved by you before the actual post is made?
  • In what year is the game set? I'm not quite yet up to the 2072 timeline, mostly because my games use the Brackhaven/Dzugashvili political race as a backdrop a lot.
  • From an OOC point-of-view, what's the expected posting rate and general days/hours when everyone's more active?

Excellent back story with a good reason for a magic-type to be playing around in what is basically hell on earth.

Anyway, to the list.
Yeah, I'll allow gaesa.  You definitely don't seem the type to exploit them and shrug off roleplaying them, and besides, an adept trying to function in near-constant background count is going to need all the help possible.

Advanced lifestyles are fine.

Chemical protection is fine.  Anything that's not restricted or forbidden shouldn't really be a problem availability-wise if it makes sense.

Wild Mike is 3/3 L/C and you can spend bp to raise the loyalty if you like.  He's a guy who operates on the edge of the Ares base beyond the 10-mile Corridor which surrounds the Containment Zone.  He organizes expeditions to try and salvage valuables and to gather intel.

Ammo is pretty important since a major part of the setting is scarcity and being cut off from the world.  If you've got access to vehicles then you can have massive ammo stores, but when you're hoofing it, then you should keep track of your resources.  It's all part of the tension. :)

Rolling rules are spelled out in the OOC play thread here (http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=1487.0), which is also linked to in my tag.

The game is set in the 2070s.  The exact time-period is not particularly relevant to the setting.  Let's say 2072.

Posting should be checking in at least once a week.  I try to check daily at least, but sometimes a thing happens and there's no helping.

If you've got the room, I'd like to try my hand at playing a mage of some kind.  More than likely a paranormal investigator, specializing in para-critters.  Of course, if you have the room, that is.

Ok, character almost done, but I have three more quick questions:

  • Regarding background count, how bad is it? From reading Feral Cities, I was under the impression that this was mostly a problem in the Zone proper. How high should I expect the BGC to be? Anything above 2 will likely kill the character (or make him very useless at the least)
  • As an aside, how bad does BGC affect Adept powers? Namely, is it that chosen powers are completely turned off (meaning I won't regain access to them until I leave the BGC), or is it that I can't use powers totalling more than my new Magic attribute (meaning I could selective switch on or off some powers to still be able to use what I need at the moment, possibly by taking a Complex Action to rechannel my diminished Magic/Chi/etc. reserves in the appropriate places in my body)?[/i]
    • I was considering taking Astral Perception, to help deal with spirits. I was under the impression that, using a weapon focus, you could still use your normal Attr+Skill pool against astral targets, but some thread a read seems to point out that I'd need to use Astral Combat + Willpower even though I'm swinging a sword. Am I correct (I never had players with astrally perceiving adepts)?

I must say I had blithely forgotten about the Background Count when I started building the character, but I'm ready to roll with a character that is suffering from a handicap, so long as said handicap is not going to cripple him completely.
BC in the Zone is 1 everywhere and 2 in many places.  BC outside the Zone is 1 in several places and less elsewhere.

There is no rules-defined way to handle temporary power loss with an Adept.  How I view magic and mysticism in SR is as if it were lucid dreaming, but the dream is the material world.  They have awoken to a truer world, and now the real world is like a dream world where they can alter the variables to their will.  Background Count then to an awakened person is like a nightmare.  It emotionally overwhelms the awakened enough to pull away their control.

So, what does this mean for an adept's powers?  Well, this is an involuntary reaction, so having total control seems wrong.  How about you do an edge test when you enter a BC area and if you make it, you can pick what power goes down.  Then, every.. say, 10 minutes you can re-roll to try and make a new edge check to select a new power.

why on god's green earth would anyone wanna play a mage in the CZ....you gotta have a likin' for pain

It's like walking into a sand storm with your skin already off.  Also everything is made of poison.
I remember someone wanted to take Spirit Bane [Insect Spirits]...[/list]

I just re-read through much of Chicago, and I have to say that I am now MORE intrigued at playing a mage in Chicago.

Every run has problems and potential dangers.  A street sam taking a package into the Ork Underground in Seattle could be life-threatening if you take a wrong turn in the tunnels - one Ghost Gator is enough to take out some pretty tough sams.  You could be a hacker and get your persona fried by some IC on a security node, ending up like Philo Gantt in Strange Days, your frontal lobe digitially fried and unable to process any incoming information.  Granted, neither of these has to deal with insect queens and other spirits potentially awakening from torpor, nor do they have to deal with an FAB III cloud, but there are dangers no matter what you play or where you play.

I also got an idea to play a medic or street doc of some kind (cyber doc or organ thief), trading his services for BTLs or tempo.  I can hear him in my thoughts:  Everybody needs medical attention.  Some get it before they need it.  And I'm the guy to give them the services needed.

Well, didn't get any answer regarding it and I supposed it wasn't such a good thing after all so I dropped the Astral Perception/Combat part and tried to concentrate on making a hardened survivalist/tracker/hunter (since being a talislegger can mean stalking a target and taking it down quickly to gather the reagent before it decays). Somewhere between the Athelete's Way and the Warrior's Way, I still picked the latter because I figured that'd be more useful on average.

Final question though: since it was established that the optional "Adepts and Geasa" rule was good to go, can a single geas affect more than one power?  I'm not talking about getting the Geas quality more than once, but more like having powers that are "limited" in the same way that spells can be attuned to a fetish to reduce their drain. As GM, I would find a bit OP that a negative quality gives you a 25% discount on all powers, so I see three possible ways of handling:

The confusion comes from the wording of the last two sentences of the optional rule:
Quote
In this case, breaking the geasa only affects that power; the adepts remaining geasa-limited powers are unaffected.
So on one hand, it says breaking the geas(a) only affects one power. On the other, it mentions the other powers are still limited by the geas(a). From what I've seen, there's been quite a few debates on the subject on these forums, but nothing that came close to an official answer. Considering I'm going for a pure adept rather than an augmented one (I always find it annoying that some implants or powers are so grossly imbalanced, like Imp. Attribute vs Muscle Toner/Aug; each PP costs 10 BP, and thus "worth" 50k nuyen), I'm trying to get the most out of it. And since BGC will take down whole Magic points, I don't want to focus on just two or three powers.

While waiting on an answer to finalize the character, I looked at the active characters to see how I'd fit in. While I was surprised to see there was another Awakened of the Asatrù tradition (I had not even noticed Devoted was Awakened in the first place), I also realized two things: first, my skills that I had expected to be useful are actually overlapping on other people's skills (Machete is a better Outdoorsman and blade fighter and has more Perception and other stackable bonuses to everything that I care to count, Devoted will handle spirits so I'm definitely throwing Astral Perception out the window, and Digger is a sneak and the mob's next olympic champion); Second, the average Cha+... well, any social skills, hovers around 3 or 4...

So I'll probably submit two characters, with a second one being a more social adept to handle this apparently forgotten part of the team. People can then vote on which character they'd actually hire for the 'run. Also,  just have way too much time on my hand, so I can make two characters for the kick of it.

Eh, Jack is live too (link to charsheet in my sig); he's a character someone else started and I picked up mid-game after that player went missing in action. I don't think his presence is reflected on the first post of this thread, but I've been playing him for a while now. I rewrote him into a bit of a hacker/face (albeit, not much of either). He's middle-of-the-road at a bunch of stuff, and a sort of techie-survival build with a mouth and some second-hand tailored pheromones (eugh). I've been playing around with a bit of his backstory, fleshed out from the bits that came before I joined the game... mostly just to help me figure out what that character's goals would be and why he's there in the first place.

It seems like Devoted might get retired, so despite magic being hell to play it could be a useful role. But I think having more of a face around would be awesome, too... really, I'd go with making a character you want to play.

Also, Gardener was a character (a tree-man tank) but has gone NPC now since his player went MIA. If someone did want to jump into something immediately, that might be an option, although he's laid up and pretty damn wounded at the moment, so prob not too much fun. Anyway, my character Jack came in with Gardener and is worried about getting him out alright at the moment.

You can tie as many powers as you like to a single geas, but if you break that one geas, then you lose all of those powers.

The biggest role that's missing is the rigger/hacker role.

I am, at the moment, looking for a shadow run game, and just stumbled upon this thread, being very interested in joining if you in fact should need more players; especially seeing as you lack a rigger.
I can outline a basic character idea for now, but seeing as I'd have to refamiliarize myself with the source books, I'd probably need at least a bit time to actually create my character.
Just shortly to myself, as a player:
I never played shadowrun (in any edition), and just recently (about 2 to 3 months ago) started playing P&P RPGs as play by post. I'm, at the moment, playing in both a Traveller and a Pathfinder game. I'm able to post about one to two times per day, usually one shorter post, plus a longer one, but that's varying, too. In case you'd like to check my writing style, you can maybe look at the campaign (http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/freetrader-maverick, the game running in a forum thread, and going by 'Kreios').
My basic idea would be playing a technomancer rigger, basically a kind of 'mechanical genius'.
He'd (haven't got a good name yet, so let's go with Buteo for now) have grown up in a smaller, really unnoticeable town, and his childhood was nearly the same, except for his love for drones, machines and other electronical gadgets. And, beginning with his sixteenth birthday, after being logged into the matrix with his own, first, careful modifications, and experiencing the crash first hand, he discovered that they do love him back. It basically was the trigger to set him straight, get him to a very, very good school in engineering and electronics, and ace several courses there. Well, it's easy to find a bug in a computer if said computer can tell you where the bug lies, isn't it? But his love remained with drones, custom-built, custom modified, or even just plain out of the box ones. And from there, his downfall came. In university, as he now was, 2071, he did a short test flight with a newly built drone of his, built for controlling, observing and maintaining large sensor nets (for example for monitoring polution), he picked up a strange feed from a AAA company compound, and in his youthful optimism decided to take a better look.
Two weeks later he was on the run, his parents dead, most of their assets taken, and met as a last-ditch-hope with a smuggler who promised him to take him to safety - for a substancial amount of money. Well, he was definitely right - he was safe from the corp here. But he wasn't safe in Chicago. Noone was.

Can you, in case you're interested, tell me which sourcebooks you'd like me to use, and what build options there are? Plus, of course, if you'd like modifying the story (or character) in any aspect.

(Will finish later... almost 5am... stupid lines of code...)
(2nd edit: removing the sheet part since I'm repeating it below)
Blame Canada all you want, I don't want to be part of this country anymore.

Anyhow, because I was wondering how it'd turn out, I made a Hacker Adept. Turns out that with a few Improved Ability powers, etc. it turns out fairly ok, especially considering I probably won't be running into a Slamm-O! or FastJack-level hacker/spider out in CZ. To make matters interesting (and because I didn't feel like rewriting the whole thing), I'm linking him back with my first proposed background, albeit that this character will be Gerhardt's and Freya's child, and Gerhardt won't have survived the Banshee's attack on Freya. I rounded him up into a semi-Face too, with some Kinesics and Empathy software to back it all up.

(Yet another) question for the GM
Speaking of backing up skills with gears and such, what's the rule on dice/rating modifiers? I noticed that in the Rolls and discussions thread, the example roll given stacks a lot of things for the Perception roll. I was under the impression that a single roll could not receive more than a certain amount of non-circumstancial bonuses. The Chummer character generator seems to cap my bonuses at half the base skill, so I want to know exactly if this rule is indeed in effect or if it has been ignored/removed for this game. Most of my equipment and powers give me bonus past what I can actually make use of, mainly because I intend to later upgrade those skills and expect that it will be easier to do this than find new gear, and also because most of Loki's gear belonged to his father who was far more experienced than he was.

This character was built with Chummer Chargen, with just about every book available since it was mentionned at the beginning of this thread that all of them were allowed. Everything respects the availability 8 limit (with the sole exception of the Chemical Protection armor mod, as I asked earlier).

Here's an unexpected problem: the full sheet is too long and exceeds the 20 000 characters limit on single posts.

I'll try to correct this. but I have to get moving so it won't be until later tonight.

It's the difference between a skill boost and a dicepool modifier.

If something is a skill boost, it can only up to1/2 the skills unaugmented level.  So, that's improved ability or reflex recorders.

General DP bonuses, which includes everything but improved ability and reflex recorders are uncapped save for a few things, such as the situational bonuses on social rolls.

So, the difference between the two is that something which raises your skill has a cap, but it gives you a higher effective skill, increasing things like the maximum bonus you can receive from a teamwork test.

The relevant text from SR4a p68
Quote
The maximum natural rating available for a skill is 6, or 7 with
the Aptitude quality (p. 90). Some implants and magic, as noted in
their descriptions, may increase the actual skill, creating a modified skill
rating, whereas others may simply provide bonus dice to the test (and
do not affect the base rating at all). Note that the modified rating is
used when calculating costs to improve the skill. The maximum modi-
fied rating allowed is 1.5 times the natural rating (making 9 the maxi-
mum achievable, or 10 with the Aptitude quality).

Well, since I can't get below the 20 000 character limit on post (considering it includes the BB code, it's no wonder), I'll have to cut the background and sheet in two.

Name:Aelfwine Ströbel
Alias:Loki (everyday), Blackdogg64 online
Race:Human
Sex:Male
Nationality:AGS
Lifestyle:"The Farmhouse" Advanced lifestyle, worth 7 LP, 1100¥, +10% for Roommate, total 1210¥, 1 month paid only
Comforts:Low (decent furniture, a real bed, etc) [2 LP]
Entertainment:Squatter (if it's not on my commlink, it's probably not worth it) [1 LP]
Necessities:Low (Pseudo-running water and power, thanks to solar stills and green plan energy) [2 LP]
Neighbourhood:Squatter (as good as a neighborhood gets in this hell hole) [1 LP]
Security:(Low Mom may have lost half her Magic, but Force 3 spirits are decent household guards still) [2 LP]
 Lifestyle Qualities:
Animal Lover (2) [3 LP]Not quite LP farms, but mom's just getting started.
Homegrown Farming [1 LP]Mom Cleaned some earth ("not as bad as the Black Tide's run off" she said) and planted it.
Perfect Roommate [2 LP]Yes, my mom makes the dishes and my laundry still... and she's a mage too.
Crash Pad [-1 LP]There's always a bunch of people home, trying to get mom to cast this spell or that.
Green Plan [-1 LP]Solar panels and wind mills, not enough for the whole community though.
Living by Committee [-1 LP]Strength in number, but we have to play by their rules.
Trigger-happy Landlord [-1 LP]The committee doesn't like Awakened too much.
DescriptionAt the edge of the Northside, "the farm" is a small enclaves of damaged buildings surrounding what was once a small park, which has been divided in fenced lots where the paying residents can put livestock or try to eke out a garden. Freya's back-to-nature upbringing got a kick out of the place, and she's currently spending most of her time trying to make her animals reproduce and her garden grow, leaving Loki stuck with doing jobs to pay the bills. Decision-making is done via weekly popular assembly, and so far a slim majority considers the two new Awakened's service worth the risk of attracting dangerous spirits or FAB III clouds.

Physical Description:Loki is… odd. A mild Changeling, his hair, beard and body hair are slightly thicker, with black guard hair (like those of wolves) sticking out of the season-changing "fur" (picture something somewhat akin to Wolverine's facial hair in the X-Men movies). He is otherwise relatively unremarkable, wearing an army-style camouflage jumpsuit and helmet that looks a little big for him. Despite the backpack and combat vest, he looks more like a geek costuming as a military rather than the real deal, even with an assault rifle in his hands. The fact taht he wears sports glasses under the helmet's visor clearly doesn't help, yet you can can't help but find him endearing, in that "look at the kid playing soldier" kind of way, except that he's way past action figures.
Personality/background
“Loki” was born and raised in the northern AGS. Early on, he expressed an interest in gaming and computers in general, much to the disappointment of his awakened mother. In 2061, however, with the passing of Haley’s Comet, things suddenly took a new turn for the child: a mild changeling, his body suddenly sprouted thick, wolf-like hair on his face and limbs. He also developed the uncanny ability of sensing electric activity, even as faint as a metahuman body, in his immediate vicinity. Fearing public opinion of what might have been a new goblinization, his mother secreted him away in the secluded lodge of her Àsatru circle. There, along with the gode Gunnar and the others of the circle, they conferred on the matter of the child, which was rather distraught over not having a deck at hand. As the SURGE wave smoothed over and no widespread panic seemed likely should the “wolf-child” be brought forth, Loki’s mother returned home with him. He was nine years old.

As Haley’s Comet left, Loki began developing additional talents. His senses sharpened, particularly his scent; his reflexes waxed strong, to the point of competing with his friends in gaming despite having no datajack with which to connect to his deck. Soon enough, he was brought forth before the whole circle again, this time as an awakened. Gerhardt, the only other adept, offered to train the child. The results were mixed: though the child had uncanny reflexes and senses, he demonstrated little interest in combat or survival training. Rather, he turned his mind into using computers in a time when trodes and implant-free simsense did not exist, using controls and screens with as much speed as a wired decker could. The whole circle was not exactly pleased, but the child was willful and refused to care about their expectations. Still, Gerhardt and his wife-to-be Freya supported the child, claiming that magic worked in fickle ways, and that they were no hermetic mages to try and constrain the child’s natural leanings.

Three years later, Crash 2.0 swept the world. Gerhardt’s parents’ minds were lost in the Matrix while Loki’s mother, returning by plane from an Àsatru congregation in the Scandinavian Union was lost at sea when the Boeing blindly crashed into another airliner. It’s around this time that « Loki » took this name for himself, hoping to become what Winternight feared, an agent in the Matrix that would oppose them. It was wishful thinking from a youth, but he clings to this name to this day.

Freya and Gerhardt took the child under their wing and hid at the edge of  Berlin's shadows, taking on a life of shadowrunning. Their talents made them valuable, and the warrior adept's expertise at tackling paranormal threats meant a steady stream of jobs, with Loki joining them as a hacker once the technology was once again available. Things went well for a year or two, but as it turns out, some of the paras that Gerhardt was paid to hunt happened to feel the same way about losing their loved ones as they did. In an act of retaliation, a banshee assaulted Freya, draining her of some of her essence. The Infected's sadistic urge to draw out the act saved the girl's life as a Guardian spirit quickly fetched her lover, then assisted in dispatching the creature, but the damage was done, and Freya had lost half of her magical potential, while Gerhardt himself had taken a lethal blow that Freya’s diminished powers could not heal. Worse yet, a few calls and data searches from Loki uncovered that the Banshee was part of a larger organization of similar night creatures, and it would seem they had been marked to suffer for the rest of his life rather than have a quick death.

The only wise move was to move out. Burning out most of their savings and all of their local contacts and favors, they took the bare minimum and shipped out to Chicago, figuring the possibly lingering FAB III bacteria would deter any pursuer. Freya and Loki have been eking out a life of survival ever since, though she is paying ever less attention to her foster child, losing herself in her pet projects instead. It’s been over a year now, money’s running tight, and someone has to do something. Loki used his last savings to have Gerhardt’s old equipment refit for him from Boris Kalachnikov, then contacted Wild Mike, hoping that his talents could be worth a bit of cred.
