Not a bad movie all up, some nice effects and the plot was fairly consistent. A few things I didn't like but that's personal taste and I suspect at least one person on these forums would like the things I didn't. A few other things I'd like to mention but I can't be sure they wouldn't give away something I shouldn't so I'll conclude with I don't feel I wanted my money but I haven't seen enough to judge how well Disney as a franchise owner will do.

Well, it can't be worse than Episode I
I fully endorse J.J. Abrams getting his shot at the Star Wars franchise after what he did to Star Trek...

Wow fast response considering its 3am here and I posted in the wrong forum by mistake and just came back to delete the post. Oh well I'll leave it here and repost in the one I meant too.

Come on who didn't like Liam Neeson's performance as Qui-Gon Booze? I mean uhhhh Drunk-Man Gin. Wait that's not right either. What i'm trying to say is that Ra's al Ghul did a wonderful job being a Jedi Knight in that film. Hold on...

Well maybe a mod could move it to off-topic
(Also it's past 17.00h where I am and I'm just about to leave the office)
@Mulcarn
I just recently watched the Cinema Sins for Episode I and I have to say: AAAAARGH! So much stupidity in this film alone...

Yeah about 36 hours or so form now I"ll be watching it myself. I'm fairly confident it will be good, though I'm willing to bet we only see luke at the end of the movie or for a very small portion of the movie. :P

I know different time zones, different people on the forum just don't normally see a response that fast to my posts. Still different time zones/times of seeing is why I stipulated no spoilers just impressions and on that note like I said as a film its not bad and most of my gripes are personal taste issues rather than movie ones and several of those I'd already seen in the previews so I knew about them going in.

The corsets are for all the elf stripper-ninjas that so many Mr Johnson's seem to have all the time.

It's a pity that Harrison Ford sucked so badly in the movie. You could tell he could give two shits about being there and just wanted to get it over with.
He almost spoiled the movie for me.

The only roles people want from him lately are ones he's already done and furthermore people have wanted them for years. Wouldn't stop nagging him about it. I'd be pissed off at having to reprise the role too. I rather liked him in Morning Glory... he's a good actor guys.

What he did to Star Trek...
Do you mean the way he revitalized a franchise that was nearing flatline due to not having anything new produced for several years, bringing in a whole new batch of fans?

Sure, if you want to call it that...
I admit that I didn't even bother watching more than a few episodes of the last tv-series - to much rebooting and re-imagining for my taste. And the two films did exactly the same only even more so and with even less regard to Roddenberry's vision. Not to mention the simply moronic plot devices in the last film...
Suffice to say, that I didn't enjoy them. But each to his own...

I, on the other hand, enjoy all Trek (with a few general exceptions) including the new movies. The new movies are very good, just different and brought up to date.
The exceptions:
1) Shatner's performance in TOS
2) The very first motion picture made - Boring drivel
Side note - By refusing to watch much Enterprise, you miss out on one of the best recurring characters not on the main cast in Trek--Commander Shran.

I'm not a JJ Abrams fan.
This latest money grab...er Star Wars movie... what retread of a retread of a retread it was. I felt so icky after watching it I went home and took a shower. And don't get me started on the joke he turned Star Trek into....

I also like the new Star Trek movies though I would have made some different choices in the special effects department. Star Trek weaponry is iconic to the series and going with a more generic looking PEW PEW for the starships was a little disappointing. OTOH I think the actors did an excellent job of paying homage to those that preceded them and the time travel spawning an alternate time line is classic Star Trek shenanigans.
I do disagree with your exceptions. Yes Shatner was over the top but that was one of the things that made TOS so distinctive. Plus think of all the comedy skits that would never have existed if not for Shatner's Kirk. Also, at least in my case, the first movie gets better the more times I watch it. ;D Of course, I thought TNG series was pretty boring when it first got started too. It took quite a while for me to warm up to that show.
As to Enterprise, I have a love/hate relationship with that show. IMHO for every thing they did right with that show they so screwed something else up. The one thing, though, that I can't forgive them for is that god forsaken temporal cold war. God I hated that plot line. It would've been one thing if it had been a one and done but they went back to it over and over and over and over.......
EDIT: And as for Star Wars I have to say I enjoyed the hell out of it. I would have tried to find some other toy to give the New Order than what they did but what are you going to do?

There's only one other option, Jim; BUILD A BIGGER SPACE STATION OF MASS DESTRUCTION!

Well, another thing that bothered me is where they got their hands on Gallifreyan technology. I mean to cram that much hydrogen in there it would've had to been bigger on the inside, right?
-
Well, freezing it cold enough should shrink it down a good bit... Not sure how much, though.

Really?
I thought he was great....I could never dream for a better "old" Solo.

The Star Trek Movies:
They are entertaining and the *characterizations* are quite good. I like the re-imagining of the characters and their interactions.
The plotlines, however, have been utterly awful and insulting to the intelligence of the audience almost as badly as the Transformers nonsense. In neither movie did any of the villains do anything remotely believable or logical. They existed, alongside their respective macguffins, simply to push the action forward.
New Star Wars:
This film was handled in a much better fashion. The characters were good, most of the scenes made some logical sense. There are a few things that are just stupid (the monsters on Hans ship, the interstellar Planetkiller) but overall, it treated the audience with much more respect than either of the Trek outing.
I see a lot of complaints about it being a retread of A New Hope and, yes, there are similarities, but they are mainly thematic and structural. Rey and Finn are Very different from Luke and Han and Han as Obi-Wan is nowhere near the same.

Honestly not sure where you are getting this from. Nero was nuts, plain and simple. Plus he's a Romulan which means concern for anything not Romulan is pretty minimal. He's bent on revenge against Spock at any cost. If you are expecting ANYTHING logical from him then you don't understand Nero's motivation.
As to Khan I did not see anything from him do anything that was out of character from the previous incarnation of Khan. Khan is super intelligent, manipulative, arrogant and completely ruthless. After all he did help start WWIII at one time. There isn't anything he would be unwilling to do to a) survive and b) liberate his followers.
I wasn't overly fond of Peter Weller's character but there are precedents for him. Both Enterprise and Star Trek VI used subversive elements in Starfleet who attempts to manipulate events in order to "protect" Earth's interests. These are your ends justify the means types.
That's my two cents on it anyway.

Okay, for a single example: How long did he and his shipmates float around in dead space twiddling their thumbs doing nothing, not resupplying, taking shoreleave, communicating with, oh, anyone? Twenty years was it? Stupid, insulting and any writer worth his salt would never do such a painfully stupid thing.

I believe the implication is that they were laying low until Spock showed up to get revenge on. Also I believe the implication would be that anyone that did encounter Nero just would not live to tell about it. Space is a big place and if one ship wants to remain anonymous and has the capabilities to enforce that desire I think that is a reasonable assumption. I understand if it bothers you they didn't go into it explicitly but really it is immaterial to the story IMHO. The only reason for the first five minutes or so of the movie is to establish the split from the original Star Trek universe. Basically it was the prologue. Then they jump forward to begin the story of how Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise this time around. It's left up to the viewer's imagination to fill what Nero was up to in the interim.

Finally saw the movie... I didn't like the new Star Trek movies... sue me. That is NOT the kind of fencing Sulu practices Abrams... unless I remember it wrong. I always prefered TNG and Voyager anyway. Anyway he better not add Q in the next movie. I know its paranoia but I just have this silent fear that I will see someone who isn't legendary Lancie in the role.
As for Star Wars... uh... I liked it but I had my concerns and a few complaints. At least the characters weren't utter tropes like in Rebels... jesus christ... REBELS... We replaced the epic Starkiller with that kid Ezra...
