Title: Gang Related
Post by: Boer_Kommando on <01-15-11/1713:05>
Looking to start a game here.
The premise as you can tell revolves around gang life. This isnt going to be low powered characters, but it will be centered around a more gritty street feel.

The specifics:
No resources above 150k
400 Build Points
No gear above availablity 8

to compensate you will be given:
Chulos gang 3(8)/1  You may up the loyalty to 4 by putting points into it, but beyond 4 you need a criminal SINner flaw.

You represent the Carnales (Brothers in the gang who are like OG's)

I have one player already and interested in up to 3 more.

Seattle, yes.

Can born rich make it 40BP gear? and what availability can restricted gear bring me?

You'll need to really explain why you're out in the Chulos territory being rich, with access to that wealth and restricted gear works as printed due to the fact you're spending the points on the quality. Any idea of type of character yet?
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Chrona on <01-15-11/1835:52>
Going chromed probably. A bit at a loss for what "important" role to fill so combat probably.

Ever read the New York stuff? Theres a increase in rich kids running off to join gangs, might take a similar angle. The born rich or restricted gear could come from a previous life or successful hit/job. Might make good plot fodder.

Sounds fun.  I'm going to make a Latino Dwarf who is a Weapons Specialist.  Going to call him, "el diablo corto" or "el diablo minúsculo", he will look like the human on page 72 of the Shadowrun 20th corebook.

I'm in Boer. How's a big, nasty Troll adept with an AK-97 and a combat axe sound?
And here he is. I threw tacnet and stuff in there just in case other people bought some good vision and audio enhancers and comlinks. If noone else does, it's only a +1 bonus to everything. Not a game killer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Name: Victor Crespo
Alias: Veto
Race: Troll (40 BP)
Sex: Male
Nationality: Atzlan
Lifestyle: Low
Karma Spent: XXXXX
Physical Description: This Troll seems to be particularly comfortable with an AK-97 hanging from a sling by his side and an large combat axe hanging from his waist. He wears a biker helmet that fits between, and around his horns that stick out wide from his head like a bull. His goggles hide his eyes, but the way his head moves back and forth gives one the feeling that he is looking for something. He has a rosary around his neck, and a portrait of the virgin Mary tattooed on the top of his right hand. His bronzed skin and dark hair make him appear to be of Atzlan decent.
Personality/background Veto has been with the Chulos for a while. They use him for dirty work, but he likes dirty work. He has taken heat for a few things that the gang has asked him to do, and hasn't asked for much in return. In return, they have given him access to secure safe-houses when he needed to lay low, and some decent weapon mods by their armorers.
Why are the Chulos so generous to a Troll that doesn't ask for anything? Because he works hard, that's why. Every time they ask him to do something, he does it. It doesn't matter if it's selling drugs, killing cops, or guarding one of the senior members of the gang, he is one hundred percent reliable so far, and fast to react. He also has a knack for battle tactics.
His parents died, worked to death by agricultural wage slavers, so he has a particular disdain for order and law.
Veto is smart enough to understand he's being used by the Chulos to do their dirty work. He doesn't care, because he likes the dirty work. His goal is to die in a blaze of glory with a rosary around his neck, so he can say his last prayers.
Veto makes money for the Chulos by selling drugs in the gymnasiums he works out at.

I'd be interested in playing a batshit crazy street magician/street preacher. I'm a new player though, and quite unfamiliar with magic. So if somebody else wants to make a mage too, I'd say go ahead, because there's a fair chance that my guy will be hilariously ineffective.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: joe15552 on <01-15-11/2219:26>
Hey Bewilderbeast. It's not that hard to make a mage, you can probably be nicely effective. You will be limitted to Force 2 sustaining foci because of the availability limit, which is a little rough, but not that bad. The key to making a good mage is to have good drain stats. The better your drain stats, the more spells you can cast without feelin' the burn. I think a catholic street preacher would be pretty damn sexy for this game. A suggestion would be to check out the material on page 37 of street magic for some more inspiration for a cool tradition I think would fit your character concept. Depending on your tradition you choose, your drain stat (besides willpower) will be charisma, intuition, or logic. Think about which one of those 3 stats you want to be the highest on your character.

no 'subtle' types I see lol

Next order of business is to decide if you fall into a certain set or crew. With the numbers the Chulos boast there could be a go-gang r two within the ranks as well as regular thrillers. Also, give some thought to your role within the gang culture as well.....money man, runner, chemist/cutter, etc. gangs are criminal cultures and well, survive off of criminal enterprise....what's yours chummer?

I'd like to volunteer Felicia "Loca" Vargas, formerly a mere gang hanger-on who decided that sleeping her way to a position of influence wasn't really working and switched to carving people up with sharp instruments instead. (She's not picky, though: Carving people up with blunt instruments is also fun.]

Sounds fun.  I'm going to make a Latino Dwarf who is a Weapons Specialist.  Going to call him, "el diablo corto" or "el diablo minúsculo", he will look like the human on page 72 of the Shadowrun 20th corebook.

From a spanish point of view that sounds kinda weird, like a Google Translator translation, you know what i mean?....you'd probably want something more like "El diablito", it gives the same meaning but it's got personality and is what someone who might be a badass might be called.  You could also say "El pequeño diablo", "El diablo enano" ....but I personally think "Diablito" is the best ;)

Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: inca1980 on <01-16-11/2008:54>
Could I jump in this one?  I'd like to be a young 16 year old Ork technomancer named Koello.  He started off wanting to be a hacker, but quickly realized that when in a jam, sprites would materilize and help him....his mentor, B.B. quickly directed him to appropriate people to teach him how to hone his Resonance and although he still lives in the Barrens, in cyberspace he hangs out with hackers and technomancers from all over the world.  His persona is sculpted as a robin-hood medieval rogue type character and his sprites are his merry men.
His tough upbringing though definitely instilled ganger thug skills in him to a point as well.  He wants to start out shadowrunning and improve his situation along with the situation of his family.

@inca1980
Thanks, I have no idea exactly how to translate spanish correctly.   That was from a translator.  I saw the "El pequeño diablo" but thought the tiny word was funnier.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Boer_Kommando on <01-16-11/2130:51>
@inca1980: Culturally the Chulos are latinos, especially close to their Aztec roots so the Robin Hood, white anglo-saxon angle is well...not appropriate. There is then the issue that people are scared of Technomancers, which can be played off as being a really talented hacker, which leads to the lack of high tech available to your surroundings, not to mention your hood is a z zone with not alot of reliable wifi....an issue for TM's. TM's are not really 'earth based' as they are AR/VR and if in a pack mentality they group together (as TMs). Long way around saying no, but I wanted to give you a reason and not seem to dismiss it out of hand.

@ The rest: I dont seem to be seeing alot of variety....all combat types. A group of all combat types will generally only have 1 option available to them...violence. We can get down with a bit of the Ultra-violence, but you're in a z zone and Doc Wagon wont be making any pick ups in the 'hood. You should also remember that if you make enough noise for the cops (KE) to come down on your hood its in helicopters and APCs (ala road masters, etc).

Not to say you shouldnt be combat capable, but a team comprised of only such will get you assignments that are bloody and more hazardious.

Oh, woops, i didn't read everything then I guess cuz i was thinking that we could be of any gang.  Mine would have been Crimson Crush.  Well then, if it's the Chulos, i'll think of something else, already got ol' Machete tied up in another run :)

I'm not oppose to running a face person. Heavy in social skills for the group if it would be a better fit. The Orc is ready but will do the face and will give all stats tomorrow for which ever the group prefers.

Boer, i meant a street tough. A guy who knows how to survive. So different skillsets are a part of this. Basically, a character who's physically oriented, but still pretty smart and can handle both stealth and basic social interactions, along with some matrix tinkering.

Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Boer_Kommando on <01-17-11/1320:54>
Thanks for the clarification Kot.

As I've fielded a few emails on the subject now, I dont inherently have an issue with a combat heavy group. I just means the gang biz you're given is the heavy handed type.

You players are to be among the 'carnales' trusted brothers (or on the fast track of being if your loyalty rating is below 5). As carnales you arent the upper encelon of leadership, but you have a voice in most matters. You may even be a leader of your own set/crew, but you are brought together to handle things because of your capabilities. Does this help clarify things?

Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Bewilderbeast on <01-17-11/1627:08>
I've switched my mage guy's specialization from Combat to Health. Might fiddle with his spell selection, too. He's kind of going to bomb any social situation he finds himself in (Uncouth quality, to reflect the poor hygeniene and rambling craziness that come with the territory of a crazy street preacher-type), but he should hopefully be able to open some doors for the group with his magic. So if we want to diversify, that's cool. If we'd rather go guns blazing, I'm fine being magical medic.

Name: Angelo Soto
Alias: Jack
Race: Human (hispanic/asian)
Sex: male
Nationality: UCAS
Lifestyle: Low
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: Angelo is average - average height, complexion, build. That's usually all people can tell about him. Even his mixed heritage seems to influence the way he looks by even making it more average.
Personality/background 'Jack' was always the silent kid everyone took advantage of. He was always first to pick for the most gruesome and boring tasks, and the last when it came to fun and games. He spent most of his youth being a lookout, errand boy, courier, or simply manual laborer. By the time he got adult, he was a part of the gang, but as a small cog in the machine - insignificant even to his gang-mates. He never excelled at anything, but he never was bad anything too. Except scaring people. For some reason - maybe it was his name, maybe his upbringing, or just general way of being - he couldn't scare a lost kid. Even when armored, armed and ready to kill he still was a 'nice kid'. That's how everyone has seen him, from the moment they met him. And they liked him... Until they forgot - and they did it all the time.
So, one day he does something significant. He jumps and takes five bullets instead of one of the gang's leaders. They get him to a hospital, grease all the palms, and tell the doctor, that 'The boy can't die.' So he disappears after a few weeks of therapy, and nobody notices...
Untill he gets back, a few moths later, sporting some good bioware, that surprisingly matches a suite that one of the Megas is trying to advertise as custom-made 'for the Expert community'. And he has some shiny new gear, some nuyen to spend, and a brand new corporate SIN, and a job. But he's still one of you. Even if he had to pay a price for his choices, he wants to be someone, and he's going to get what he wants.

I know there's a complete lack of mojo or tech-wizardry, but I went ahead and made a ridiculous murder-face.
If someone else is dead-set on playing, I'll totally give up the spot.  I just like making characters...

Name: Isabella Cordova
Alias: Dizzy
Race: Elf
Sex: Female
Nationality: UCAS (latino descent)
Lifestyle: Custom (medium)
Karma Spent: NONE
Physical Description: At 163cm and 54 kilos, Dizzy doesn't look like much of a threat on the surface.  Her eyes tell a different story.  Her hair, which can change at a moment's notice, is usually black and pulled back in a tight ponytail and her toffee-colored skin is air-brush perfect.  Still, while she may look like a high-price joygirl, she certainly doesn't dress like it.  Looking at her most of the time, you'll see her in a longcoat with a respirator and glasses covering most of her face.
Personality/background: Isabella grew up basically raised by her older brother.  Her father disappeared when she was 5 and her mother turned to the Wire not long after.  She looked up to her brother and his banger friends and would hang out with them all the time she could.  They used to joke around, "You better watch out for Dizzy.  She's going to grow up to be the baddest banger on the block.  She'll frag you up!"  They stopped joking after she did her first bid in juvie for firebombing a store clerk who tried to get her in trouble for stealing.

When she got out at 11, she was even harder and meaner.  She spent the next few years slingin gear and hunting down rival crews right along side the boys.  Eventually, she hooked up with one of the older boys, got pregnant and calmed down.  That went well for a couple years.  Her pappi was an OG and the two of them made a pretty strong couple within the gang.  But no matter how she might have changed, the hood was still the same.  While she was walking past one of the corners a couple younger hoods were working, a car full of hoo-riders cruised past and sprayed the lot of them.  Not satisfied with surviving the attack, she grabbed up one of the kids ingrams, jacked the first car she saw, and chased after the shooters.  The resulting chase took them all the way to Bellview, where she finally rammed their SUV into a storefront.  As she was spraying the interior of their vehicle with automatic fire to make a point, she realized just where she was far too late.

Back in prison on a 2nd degree murder beef, she learned that her son had been killed along with his father (they never married,) in what she supposed was yet another retaliation.  Her first time in grown up jail, she learned a lot more about crime than just running around and shooting people, and when she got out, instead of going back to the tatters of her life, she got smarter and started doing syndicate work.  After a while doing Uptown jobs, shooting Bliss and living at or beyond her means, she got word that her mother had finally died.  Years of BTL addiction had taken their toll on the woman, and since Dizzy's brother disappeared durring that Tempo fad, there was no one to watch the worn-out old wire-head and make sure she did things like eat.  The shock of her mother's death wasn't great, but it did make her take stock of her own habits and addictions.  She saw how, just like her mother, when things got bad, she had run away.  Dizzy cleaned up quick.  She had spent years avoiding what had happened to her and the family she'd been making, so she figured it was about time to head back to the old hood and settle up her family business.

Name: Maria Leon Gonsalez
Alias: -
Species: Elf
Sex: Female
Nationality: Caribbean League
Date of Birth: Saturday, September 11th 2049
Lifestyle: ?
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: At first glance Maria has be described as the classic latina beauty: long black hair, dark eyes and figure to die for. With longer association,  however, one can't miss some more dubious - if not disturbing - aspects like the tendency of her voice to drop a few octaves into a gravelly bass while her eyes flare in a bright green. Her choice of clothing also can not be called anything but odd, even with an eclectic bunch like the Chulos. Maria usually prefers a black tube top, black jeans and  army boots plus a nice thick leather jacket, black of course. Though she eschews most forms of jewelry, Maria will never be seen with her old service dog tags. Combined with a crystal topped walking cane, victorian mirrored glasses and a disturbing fondness for top hats which she usually pulls out of empty space Maria surely presents a sight to see. (For formal occasions she might consider adding a bow tie.)
Personality/Background
Maria is rather tight-lipped about her past. What's openly known is that she wasn't born anywhere near Seattle or even in the UCAS and apparently served in the armed forces of her home, probably with some sort of success if the first lieutenant stripes on her jacket are to be believed. Her personality is even harder to grasp as it seems to change all too often but the common baseline seems to be that Maria is at heart a normal, fun-loving young woman who works hard to keep her temper and passions in check at the risk of appearing withdrawn and morose.

That sounds awesome....that firebug could be a psionic tradition or something.  Machete doesn't have a brother because his whole family was killed except for his daughter.....unless of course his brother didn't really die!!!

Could I be some mojo? I wanna be a guy named Lucio Sanchez Davila....code name LSD.  He's grade A "cook" and he knows hella chemistry to cook drugs, but also knows alchemy, enchanting, arcana and stuff like that.  He'd be real low on the spell power, so if the firebug wants to pick up the slack on that it'd be cool.  Basically he apprenticed with a Nawal Shaman of which peyote is a huge part of your journeying....but in the chulo neighborhoods, a lot of shaman's make a living also cookin' drugs and talismongering.  Can I reserve a spot with him?

Since all the cool kids are posting their sheets, I figured I might as well do it, too.

Name: Eric Byrnes
Alias: Priest
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: UCAS
Lifestyle: Low (3 months purchased)
Karma Spent: N/A
Physical Description: Priest is smelly and disheveled, "the work of the Lord" leaving little time for trivialities such as hygiene. He has green eyes, thinning orange hair, and relatively pale skin. His build is wiry and thin, and he carries himself with a jittery, nearly-manic energy.
Personality/background Eric Byrnes came from a highly religious Irish Catholic family on the East Coast of the UCAS. He moved to attend seminary school in Seattle at age eighteen, intent on either being a theological professor of some type, or possibly even a priest. This, however, was not God's plan for Eric.

During his final year at his college, Eric Awakened. His family viewed magic with suspicion, believing it to be the work of the devil, and Eric and his family had a falling out. They haven't spoken since.

Previously, Eric had been eyeing his incredibly bleak career prospects with increasing trepidation. Theological scholars were not exactly in high demand, and many of the good churches or academic posts were filled with elves who'd been doing it for decades. But with magic came a great deal of new opportunity. Sensing his potential, Eric was swiftly employed in Ares Macrotechnology's Seattle branch. He was to train the magical members of their security force, and help design their magical defense systems.

Eric's days as a corporate wagemage were horribly soul-crushing. He felt like he'd sold his beliefs for the proverbial bag of silver. His depression took a toll on his work performance, and from there, things swiftly spiraled out of control.

Ever since his Awakening, Eric had interacted with a strange spirit in the astral realm who helped him, guided him, and taught him some of his first spells. This spirit was actually an incarnation of Fire-Bringer, but he appeared to Eric to be a bright, burning ball of warm light. Eventually, Eric had an "epiphany" and "realized" that Fire-Bringer was God, and that he was "His" new prophet.

Fire-Bringer didn't want to deceive Eric, but he was afraid that telling the young zealot the truth would cause him to snap. Fire-Bringer could plainly see that Eric was a desperate man. He needed hope, so Fire-Bringer allowed him to believe.

Eric tried to share his new philosophy with his students and colleagues, and they naturally regarded him with great suspicion and skepticism. Displeased with his work performance and worried that his delusions might get out of hand and create a dangerous situation, Eric was "encouraged" to resign. It was tough for Ares Marotechnology to let a talented mage like that walk away, unemployed and alive, but then they realized they could just as easily hire him out as a shadowrunner. They'd still get to tap his considerable magical assets, but wouldn't have to deal with the fallout if he went off the deep end. It was a win-win, as far as they were concerned.

Eric was frankly relieved to be fired. It allowed him to concentrate on his new work; helping the needy, and writing his new book of the Bible. Eric truly believed he was a prophet of God, and his delusions of grandeur caused him ditch his SIN and withdraw from society. He took up residence in an abandoned building in one of the worst neighborhoods in Seattle and began his "new church," calling himself "Priest Bishop" or just "Priest" as he became known around the neighborhood. He handed out food to local homeless people whenever he had the means to do so, but most of Priest's time was spent hunched in his study.

Priest's study is little more than a closet tucked in a corner of an abandoned building. Here, Priest has used an antique computer terminal and printer unit (powered by a nearby generator) to plaster every inch of the walls and ceiling with his "New Gospel." Priest believes his magical abilities are a blessing from God, and that he can prophesize the future by examining the New and Old Testament. Priest's nonsensical, rambling "metaphysical equations" make no sense to anybody but him, but they actually represent his hermetic tradition. Priest learns his magic through intense study, a grueling process of trial-and-error that only his somewhat insane lifestyle can allow time for. When not distracted by a run, Priest has been known to spend up to eighteen hours a day typing away at his terminal. Once he spent two whole days, day and night, compulsively looking up and writing down every prime-numbered Bible verse.

Though more or less completely insane, Priest is still incredibly kind-hearted. Locals appreciate him for the free magical healing and food he has been known to provide to the downtrodden, and are more than happy to overlook the occasional rambling, shouting street sermon delivered at 3 AM for his continued services.

Priest's altruism rarely interferes with his shadowrunning, however. Due to what he believes is his elevated status as God's prophet, Priest feels like he doesn't have to follow the same rules as everybody else. He takes a very loose interpretation to Commandments six and eight, for instance. He even lets number four slide, on occassion. This means that Priest is always willing to do what is necessary to get the job done, provided he gets paid and can use his earnings to fund his new church.

After living in this state for about six years, Priest grew tired of the constant gang violence. He decided to informally back the Chulos gang, figuring that a little stability would do the neighborhood good. He began offering magical healing and even some training to Chulos gangsters. It wasn't long before they were hiring him for runs, as well.

History of the World Pt 1.

Classic.

Don't forget Chrona, when you're looking at how cyberlimbs affect your overall stats you have to average them for any test that doesn't use only certain limbs.

I'm currently contacting some of you with concept questions, please be a bit more patient with me if you can.

I'm taking in the following, as their concepts really mesh with the game. And the list isnt final by any means.

Little Devil
Yun
JDA

This list isnt final.

Okay, so I realized that there was something terribly wrong with Priest. I didn't realize when I created him that spells and foci had a cost in nuyen as well as BP. I had to completely re-create him mechanically to account for this. I figured as long as I was recreating Priest, I might as well recreate him entirely. Therefore I present to you Smiles Twice, who I think fits the tone of this particular game much better.
--------
Name: Fernando Reyes
Alias: Smiles Twice
Metatype: Elf (30 BP)
Appearance: Smiles Twice was once a relatively handsome elf with bronze skin, brown eyes, a messy, curly brown hair. Many years ago, however, he received a slash across the face, fighting for the Chulos. The cut ran from the corner of his mouth all the way up to the base of his left ear, giving Smiles Twice a hideous, lopsided smirk. This grisly scar is naturally where he gets his nickname.
Background: Fernado's specialty is smuggling a very specific type of cargo: people. Using magic in combination with his natural stealthiness and unctuousness, Smiles Twice earns profit for the Chulos gang by getting people through otherwise-tricky borders, or by taking them out to undeveloped wilderness to lie low from the law.
Fernado's magic is intuitive and natural to him. He believes he derives his power from slaying wild animals and subsuming their dying spirits into his own. Understandably, Smiles Twice is an avid hunter, and he has an almost unhealthy zest for fighting paranormal creatures in particular.
Smiles Twice is mentored by Snake, who considers Smiles' resourcefulness and ruthlessness to be great assets. Snake taught Smiles Twice the secret of binding spirits, which he used to abuse many of the beast spirits he was so fond of hunting. This has earned him the ire of the beast spirits, and Snake was quick to admonish him. Smiles Twice has tried to be more prudent with his binding since then, but he still tends to treat his spirits like slaves... except for his watcher spirits, which he treats with uncharacteristic gentleness, as though they were his pets.
Smiles Twice is sort of a newcomer to the gang, but he has proved himself loyal time and again. Still, he is relatively inexperienced, and has gained his position mostly thanks to his magical talents and a bit of luck.

Spells cost only BP's. Spell formulas (which you have to learn, and pay karma to get the spell) cost money.
As for foci, yes, they are rather pricey, but at least their karma/BP cost is simplified.

Okay, its been no easy decision here but, I'll only be taking the following. If I have a drop out the rest of you are in reserve if you wish.

Little Devil
Yun
JDA
Kot
Chrona
Bewilderbeast

I'd take more if I knew it'd be managable, but from what I've gathered 6 is stretching things as it is.

I'll be posting up the IC thread after I'm done writing an essay on dystopian societies. My recent car troubles have me severely behind the curve.

I'll be using a slightly revised Heretic, as bulk mods cant be put on synthetic limbs http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=2680.0

Quote
A couple of things popped out at me.
The bulk modification for cyberlimbs is only available for obvious limbs.

Final stats for full body average for the limbs should be
3(4)bod 3(4)agl and 2(3)str
Naturally, they'll be str6 for punching damage and agl 6 for shooting, but if you need to climb or infiltrate, you can use the modified value of 4 for those tests.
Quote
BTW, if you're going to switch from synth limbs to obvious ones (which should save you a grip of cash and give you 15 capacity slots vs. the 8 from synth limbs,) that should even leave you with some free capacity to get limb enhancements.  You could pump each arm to an 8 stat for two of the three while keeping under 8 availability.  If you still wanted to bulk-mod for JUMBO ARMS, you could juice them up to 8 across the board with a bit of armor too.

Final stats would be 3(5) 3(5) 2(4) and you'd have an extra 2/2 B/I armor to add into the mix.  Also probably get some social penalties for having jumbo arms, but they'd add bonuses for intimidation.  Also, the 8 agil to shoot with is pretty keen

Name: Walter Sobchak
Alias: El pequeño diablo
Race: Dwarf (25 BP)
Sex: Male
Age: 35
Nationality: Latino
Lifestyle: Low
Karma Spent: XXXXX
Back Story: Walter Sobchak, son of Viktor Sobchak (high up in the Russian Mafia) and Sofia Castillo. At the age of 15 Walter's parents were murdered.  Walter suspected his father's ties to the Russian Mafia. Having no training on how to exact his revenge Walter soon ended up joining the Mexican army. After many years of service, and a very bad tip off on who killed his parents. Walter ended up getting caught and thrown in jail for destroying a bridge in which his parents killer was driving over.  Needless to say Walter's parents killer was not heading over the bridge at the time the explosives went off.  Walter kicked himself in the butt for setting the timer too short as he was fleeing the service closet where he had stored the 15 kilos of explosives.  Luckily the iron door took most of the impact as the timer hit 00:00.  Walter was sent flying through the air and landed right into the windshield of the Prime Minister of Russia.  When Walter woke up he was behind bars.  Life took a turn for Walter behind bars, the Chulos quickly accepted him as one of their own.  Walter served his time, claiming he was under orders to demolish the bridge... he had the right work orders to prove that, thanks to a old buddy from the army for editing those files for him.  Walter just wished it didn't take 5 years for them to release him.  Now out and on his own again, Walter soon finds himself joining the Chulos.  Where they need protection he is there to stand tall.

I didn't want to play another hacker...

BTW Boer, if you need to pull from reserves and my number comes up, but you've got concerns about a thing on whatever build, let me know.  Don't be shy about telling me that something is pushing the limits of what you want in your game.  I'd rather you tell me 'no' than resent me for throwing off the threat scaling.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: little devil on <02-03-11/1307:26>
Boer said that the signals are very bad out where we are at.  We are lucky enough to get wifi if any.  We should be able to connect to each other if we are within a close range but that might be pushing it, from what i remember him saying in RL.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: theKernel on <02-03-11/1429:58>
I mean I guess I can see that but as an observer, does that take away from an aspect of the game?
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: little devil on <02-03-11/1716:36>
Not really, since we are playing the game as gang life.  Were you still have the your role of your character, but we are in a dead zone.  A form of Mr. Johnson will appear might not be Mr. Johnson, but we will still have missions to do.  I have no idea where Boer has his missions planned to take us.  I have not read all of the Shadowrun player books like he has.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Kontact on <02-03-11/2248:52>
Could always rig.  All that needs is mutual signal range.

8 avail can be a pain though.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: theKernel on <02-04-11/1249:40>
Kontact: Oh ok I see what you mean. Could one assume that the rigger may have made his robots prior to the run? Then, when he needs more later he also would know where to get some? (within reason)
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: little devil on <02-04-11/1256:19>
@theKernel
I think if you had a contact that would know where to get them out that might help.  Also nothing says your guy can't come from another zone or something.  These missions start out in a dead zone but who knows where they may lead.  All gear must be 8R and under too.  Hope that helps out a little.

Post by: Xzylvador on <03-03-11/0956:52>
Heh, read some stuff about Aztlan, made a guy who doesn't know squat about technology and can't hold a gun, spending most of the time in the jungle by himself, only occasionaly being a guide to cartel smugglers.

Then I read about the Chulos being a Seatle gang and feel incredibly dumb :p

Guess I'll try again. What's the group need/lacking or has too many of?
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: little devil on <03-03-11/1324:27>
I don't see why you can't play a smuggler. Your jungle can be the urban jungle, trekking thru sewers mmmmm love the smell of this guy.  As far as the gun goes he better be a good talker or know how to use a melee weapon.  ;)
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Xzylvador on <03-03-11/1521:19>
I created something along the lines of "that crazy guy, spending more time hunting snakes and talking to his knives each day than he's ever done talking to civilized people, but he knows the jungle like the palm of his hand, so if you want through, you want to deal with him regardless" kind of smuggler...
Q: You CAN throw normal knives, right? Or do you really have to buy those stupid throwing knives? (He was allergic to iron, so he uses ceramic knives)

Anyways, I don't want to keep you guys waiting for me.
My kid's sick, haven't gotten over 3 hours of sleep/night the last couple of days and bosses are being a pain in the ass. The little time I have I should spend on the two games I'm already playing.
I just liked the idea really :)
Maybe next time!
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: little devil on <03-03-11/1755:28>
There might be a draw back to using normal knives not sure.  But when in doubt toss a grenade. lol  Ok so Devil has many grenades on him at all times.  I think Boer will say how would you guy fit into the gang life mainly.  How do you see him interacting with other members.  Plus you have to remember where we are located at.

I'm down to play the alternate mundane version of that same character I'm playing in Finder's Fee.
That is, if it's acceptable.

Honestly, I built her as a mundane and then just switched to a Magician to fit the missing niche there.  The mundane version is more fun IMO, since mages are generally up their own ass all the time with that "awakened" thing.

But if JDA is still active, that whole slot is already well covered.  Basically the same character and all.

No worries, this game has been at a snails pace since inception. I'm beginning to wonder if its not the overall concept, or (please not it be) your GM's skills.

As to it possibly being a concept issue I could start up an alternative. A game based off dealing with the paranormal (magic and critters for SR) everyone already accepted would be an automatic in.
Title: Re: Gang Related
Post by: Kontact on <03-09-11/0500:02>
I've certainly got nothing against the concept.  I like gang games.  I think dudes are just waiting for the clock to crank forward and shoe to drop.  Then again, character interaction has been ignored or shoved aside so far, so I can see how it's hard for you to introduce plot elements..

I'm beginning to wonder if its not the overall concept,

Truth be told, I'm having a little trouble getting into the whole latin mindset... the only thing I can think of when thinking about Brazil at the moment is the images of the carnaval there the last days... lots of skin, breasts and asses, all shaking and bouncing, very little shadowrunning.

The concept of playing a street ganger with limited gear actually sounds pretty cool, though I'm wondering if we'll be playing street gangers that are trying to be shadowrunners, or really playing street gangers doing street gang stuff, you know... a whole different ball game.
I think that's also the reason most people (including me) came up with combat characters; the only thing I see a street-gang-level face doing would involve prostitution or use of maxed-out intimidation instead of any of the other social skills.

Dealing with paranormal... sounds terrifying!
Count me in ;)

Then again, character interaction has been ignored or shoved aside so far, so I can see how it's hard for you to introduce plot elements.
Wait, there's already an IC of this game, where? Totally missed that... and I don't like missing gangers being killed!

Well try to imagine Juarez Valley instead...

That's so much less fun...
The only latin guys I've got room for in my mind right now are those 2 brothers the cartel sends after Walt in Breaking Bad...
Edit: and drek, they are Mexican, not latin!
I've no clue how to build one of those guys... or how to play such a cool personage on a PbP without actually saying anything.

Well if I would try to run this game (I was trying get to this game before but it was too late.. :'( ) I would take some inspiration from The Shield series

BTW. Boer...is there a room for another character?

By latino I do mean Mexican, or hispanic so you're actually on cue.

Sichr, yes I have room.

Once I can get this going, I'll probably start up the the other game....like 72 hours from Lone Star giving the contract to Knight Errant, and yes there would be a reason for the time schedule.

In the game, you'd have a supporting organization....ala Hellboy, possibly not Government funded though.

And yes, an alchemically treated piece of wood could be placed in a bullet...or capsule rounds, or flechette for that matter. Bit of stretch of physical laws, but hey you live in a time of orks, trolls, elves, dragons, magic etc......

Is there anything like knuckle dusters in SR, that would apply such materials to unarmed combat?
Only "unarmed combat" item I've found are shock gloves... just a simple silver or goldplated knucle duster doesn't exist?

hardliner gloves from arsenal. Oddly enough in the exotic weapon area although it uses Unarmed skill. (Neat weapon focus idea as well.....like in Constantine)

Name: Rafael Ruiz
Alias: Rafa
Race: Ork
Sex: Male
Nationality: Aztlan
Lifestyle: Low
Karma Spent: 0, for now.
Physical Description: You wouldn't have the balls to call him ugly in the face, but let's face it, he's not a pretty boy even by ork standards. That's not what makes him stand out though, not by far. It's his skin... it's covered head to toe with tattoo's. What kind? Every kind! At the same time! They just keep moving, bugs being eaten by hummingbirds being eaten by snakes being eaten by crocodiles being eaten by dragons being eaten by a dark titan who then explodes, the pieces reforming to make it start again... That stuff's terrifying! Doesn't even stop at his skin, even his hair is part of that sick game!
Personality/background Rafael Ruiz, born in a small motorboat lying in Buenaventura's harbor, Aztlan (former Columbia), 2051. He grew up traveling around with his parents, working for the Cartels, smuggling drugs to port cities north.
February the 25th, 2062, the family had just arrived at a drop-off point in Seattle they'd used frequently when they were ambushed by a group of men who gunned them and ran off with the delivery. He passed out when the shooting started and the blood and brains of his parents splattered all over him.
If anyone ever tried looking for him, he doesn't know or really care, chances are a lot more effort had been put into finding who took the package than in finding just another lost Latin kid in a very bad neighborhood.
Members of the Chulos gang found the boy a couple of hours after the ambush and took him in their ranks, always able to use extra hands dealing out drugs.
He quickly put the death of his parents behind him, the streets just didn't give you enough time to feel sorry for yourself. Yeah, he had a family to protect him, but that really meant more fighting than less: fighting other gangs for territory and fighting your 'family' for a respect, certainly with his looks.
So he learned fighting the same way he learned most things in life; the hard way, with a lots of bumps and bruises. It became an obsession to him, a way to vent his anger and to express his joy. But there were always bigger and stronger, or just more, guys ready to knock him down, so he learned two other lessons: "if you can't beat them fair, beat them another way" and "live to fight another day".
Sure, sometimes he ran and sure, they'd laugh. Only to get beaten the crap out of them a couple of days later, in an ambush staged from shadows, rooftops, anywhere. So they didn't laugh for much longer and Rafael started getting some well earned respect.
A while later he learned another lesson, the hard way. The saying "Don't bring a knife to a gunfight" applied to fists as well. He bit off more than he could chew during a raid on a nearby mall and got into a fight with a group of security personnel. It all went well, as always, until two of the guards pulled a gun and shot him point blank. Luckily the rest of the gang had his back and managed to get him out and patched up. Halfway through recovery, Rafael went looking for a gun, any gun. It was a dirty way to fight, not as honest as real combat, but without it you were dead.
Most of his friends used pistols, uzi's or shotguns. It seemed messy to him, compared to real fighting. So they mockingly came up with a discarded army rifle. He'd seen snipers in the movies, killing people before they were even aware they were under attack; that he could get into. So he practiced, tirelessly. The little money he made with the Chulos, he spent on ammo. But he became good at it: One shot, one kill, mainly because ammo was expensive.
He had the skills and the reputation and then finally got some real work. It was a public secret that the Chulos had some dealings with the Cartels, a profitable income for both of them. But in places like Puyallup, smuggling isn't the safest of professions. So Rafael got put on scouting duty, and loves every second of it. His orders, if they can be called that, are to spot ambushers and relay that info to either side. He hasn't reported a single ambush in 3 years, there also hasn't been a single smuggler that didn't make it to the Chulos the past 3 years neither. He's getting a bit bored though, most gangs aren't stupid enough anymore to try ambushing the Cartel smugglers in Puyallup.

Wow...
Now, THAT, kids, is why we don't combine a little sleep with a lot of whiskey.
Thanks Kontact! (Took R2 Synthacardium, still is avail 8, still cheaper too.)
Lowered the skillgroup, used the BP to improve 2 other skills.

It's allowed to take R1 nanohives twice? (Kind feels like cheating since R2 are avail 10; of course a lot less essense...)
Suppose I could lose the tattoo's; don't really think they're good for anything but flair (which, admittedly, is worth something, but now you mentioned those oxy, the trade-off seems pretty bad.)... Those oxyrush do look like something Sangro would go for...
(Editted the EPO -> Synth, will look what to do with the remaining 5k and good advice later, time for work.)

Post by: Kontact on <03-10-11/0345:27>
You can take multiple cyberlimbs to stuff full of gadgets, I don't see why you can't take multiple nanohives to maintain multiple nanite systems.  From a medical standpoint, your circulatory and lymphatic system are directly joined at two places, your right and left subclavian veins, so there's at least enough real estate for two hives.  ;)

Oh, and Boer, should I assume that the most recent IC post applies to my character and any other newcommer?

Would you guys mind terribly to link to/re-post your characters? With the drop-outs and various character builds (Kontact's got more Dizzy's than I've got characters in total.), it gets a bit confusing who's who.
I figure our characters pretty much know each other (seems like we all upped our loyalty with the Chulos enough), so might comment on/watch out with things like behavior (addictions, compulsions,...), appearance, reputation etc. and probably know what each others fortes and weaknesses are. (I'll try to anyway, usually keep the things that stand out most written down as reminders.)
