This shows what a wealthy narcogang can com up with

*Shrug* Old lorries, armour plate bought from a scrapyard, and armoured glass (That's a bit harder to get.). Not exactly "High Tech". You just need a really good welder, and you'd have a WWI/Early WWII-Era Armoured Car. Certainly is stepping things up from Technicals, however.
And if there's anything the NarcoTerrorist Gangs have is money. More than they could ever launder effectively. Which makes jobs like this so much easier.
-
The Tech isn't as important as the effectiveness of the ability of the object to have it do what you want. You don't need fancy. You need what works. And considering it will stop anything short of a RPG....that's pretty good

Very A-Team. 8)

Too bad Russian RPG-7s (And their various knock-offs) are pretty easy to get, and probably cheaper than the truck they turned into an armoured car... :(

true. but it supposes that the OpFors would know where to loog for as such. And secondly....Mexican police don't get that sort of hard ware. Mexican army...OTOH
-
The tanks, dubbed "monsters" by the security forces, are believed to be the latest weapon in the fight between the Gulf cartel and their rivals, the Zetas, for control of the drug smuggling routes to the US.
I don't think the Zetas have the same armament restrictions the Mexican Police Force has. :P

So, how many miles per gallon do you get out of these things and do they come in hybrid?

One highway, zero city.
-
I thought they were hybrids; half tank, half Dekotora.
-
the handling penalty must be something along -8 or so. :P
-
Who needs handling when the only obstacle that's got a chance to stop you is a medium-or-larger-sized mountain?

Bad roads. Like, unpaved roads.

A primary reason so many armoured vehicles are caterpillar tread (Along with construction vehicles) is to displace the mass over a larger area to prevent sinking and improve traction. Russian Tanks in WWII (About the technology we're talking about here with these armoured cars) had wider tracks to deal with the lack of paved roads, while German tanks with thinner treads were designed (partly) with the Autobahn in mind.
Not sure how good the condition of the roads in Mexico and South America are, but if they're any worse than the highways of Northern Ontario and parts of the Prairie Provinces, that thing would get stuck on the way to the gunfight.

...
I just found the Libyan equivalent of a friend of mine... :o
And the DIY Weapons Factory sounds like a military version of "Junkyard Wars", only a lot more serious.
As for that Truck, the thing that makes it the most win is the cheap office chair under the turret. ;D

Lordy, I hadn't noticed that ;D

There were a few other scary parts of those links that hit me, but I will not comment upon them...

Going further on the DIY Weapons of Libya, mostly on topic with the Improvised AFVs:

Never, ever doubt or underestimate human ingenuity. And this is certainly probably some of the stuff we should be putting into the Barrens with some of the larger gangs, especially ones that have a lot of vehicles, and thus technically inclined members.
