Title: Horizon's dark secret?
Post by: Parker on <03-07-12/2132:40>
Okay, this is too funky to ignore.  I was reading the end-part of the Horizon description (pg.104) and a similar telling (pg. 98)  in "The Corporate Guide".  This immediately clicked a memory and I pulled out my 3rd edition copy of "Loose Alliances".  On page 28, it mentions a native Indian, named Zabotnik, who developed a techno/neo-communist concept back in the 2040's and disappeared .  The encounter described by the T-bird smuggler, Mad Mike, resembled the above ones very closely.  Horizon may have been built on good intentions, but as the saying goes..... :'(

So my query is this:  Is Horizon using the founding technology and political teachings of Zabotnik to create a 'hive-mind' to eradicate the sins of individualism of metahumanity?  And if so, how close are they to 'assimilating' us? :D

And, even if so, would that be "dark"?

Zabotnik sounds like Robotnik. I wonder if his plan involves putting small woodland creatures into robots and setting them loose.

I forget which book but something funky happened in a Horizon plant in China. The plant lost contact for a while and then the employees were acting hive-mindy.

I'm reminded of the Helios ending from Deus Ex: Invisible War. Hive minds may be practical (Just ask Deus or a Queen Insect Spirit), but for my nuyen, I'm sticking to individuality. ;)

I expect we'll find some answers (or more questions) in the upcoming Twilight Horizon book.

Though it wouldn't surprise me to find some vamps in there, possibly even in positions of authority.

The sparkling during the day would distract from Consensus.

Any attempts to figure out Horizon's dark secret mysteriously lead to nothing...IRL :D

Rob Boyle probably had an idea for Horizon, because he was line dev during the transition from 3rd to 4th Ed, but he left after Unwired. Then came nothing for a long time (including Corporate Enclaves), until Corp Guide...which fell right into the big freelancer exodus. So who knows what the current authors will do with Horizon ;)

Yes. Seems like some "insert canadians" dont want us to have serrious discussion on this topic. On the other side...just browse Secret History threads and you can see that almost everything has been said. I just hope that whoever write Horizon sourcebooks, has also some serrious understnading memetics, at least to the level Augmentation SB research was done (which I consider brilliant)

To be honest, so am I.  Over here in the States we've actually had corps declared equivalent to private citizens for the purposes of election fundraising.  How long till they decide to become private countries?

The only thing different between the Shadowrun universe and ours is that ours seems to be about 20 years behind them socially and politically (I don't see corps getting extraterritoriality before 2020), slightly ahead of them technically and medically, we don't have magic, dragons, fantastical beasts and our racism is still based on the colour of a persons skin.

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality
Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to
me, to me

Momma,
Just killed a man.
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger now he's dead.

Is it just me, or does that song go from the point it was made in reply to, to being relatable to a Shadowrunners life over the course of the song?

Truth is stranger than fiction.

And I'm the guy that had an entire action-packed Shadowrun story over Blueberries!

Was it about the blueberry farmers striking back at big cereal for using fake lab-made blueberries while claiming they are real? Meanwhile the fake blueberries make people sick and that brought heat down on the farmers.

Nope.  Read my fanfic to find out about it.
