Title: [Recruitment] The pimple on China's backside
Post by: eighth circuit on <04-04-12/0224:19>
...or, Aiyaaaa! I have been wanting to run a Hong Kong-based campaign. Looking for a group of 4-5 adventurers to traipse about southeast Asia.

The Rules

400 BP +10 for contacts. Anything from the SR4 source material is acceptable, though I'd prefer you stay away from exotic metatypes. Please provide a detailed and interesting description/background.

I'll be using background info from Runner Havens. If anyone doesn't have this book I'll be glad to provide some basic info on 2070s Hong Kong. Note that your character need not be from Hong Kong or even Asia. This is a place where shadow folk worldwide come together.

I plan on making at least one big post to move the game along at least twice a week, or maybe more if players participate more frequently. Likewise, I'd like players to try to make at least two posts per week, say one around the middle and one on a weekend, though this is flexible.

I am very interested. I could try and work up a character--I'm relieved to finally see another 'all sources open' start up.  That said, it won't be anything too off-the-wall or ridiculous (got that out of my system with another one). I'll be going in for surgery (believe out-patient) tomorrow, so it might take me some time to get a character posted up. Aside from that little snag, I can post fairly often.

At present, I'd likely be going for one of the two in my signature (one is listed as working, but the game is on hiatus), or I could of course build something else that the team needs--note, I don't really enjoy Face-type characters for the most part.

I allow all the sourcebooks because highly customized characters are interesting. That said, the more times I have to flip through all the sourcebooks to check on obscure rules/stats, the more likely I am to find some in-game way to make my job easier  8)

Looking forward to seeing your character, and good luck with your surgery. I hope we can get this all up and running within a week or two.

Ah, I have a character who is almost perfect for this. I made her for another game that petered out after a couple of weeks. I'd need to make some adjustments for the extra 10 points of contacts (gives me some points back for other stuff), but here's the background/build in case you're interested

Description: A slender, wiry asian woman with extremely pale skin and short hair currently dyed electric blue. Her cybereyes are normally pink, just her old eyes, but when going out for fun she can give them a soft glow. Xinzhi has an eclectic sense of style, ranging from Steampunk formalwear to funky bohemian street clothes. She has several bullet and knife wounds on her torso, but keeps them covered with armor and clothing. She tends to wear dark or heavily saturated colors to contrast with her pale skin.

History: Born in Hong Kong to a mercenary based out of Macau, Xinzhi never knew her father, and her mother was often gone for months at a time on "business trips". She spent her childhood in a safehouse paid for by her mother's blood money.

Her condition isolated her from other children and required her to receive her schooling indoors, on the Matrix. She was surprisingly well-adjusted given the circumstances, and understood the limitations caused by her severe albinism. She was extremely social on the Matrix, and even now she still spends most of her free time online.

As she grew into a teen, the distance between her and her mother became more strongly felt, and in an attempt to re-establish a bond Xinzhi began working alongside her mother as a mercenary when she was 16. She joined under an assumed name to avoid being treated differently because of her mother, and despite poor eyesight due to albinism her marksmanship earned her a place on the squad. Over the next few years, she invested much of her earnings into augmentations for herself, first and foremost replacement eyes and reflex enhancements. She never quite made the connection with her mother that the two had hoped for, and after an argument following a disastrous mission in mainland China that the two barely survived, Xinzhi resigned her commission and emigrated to the U.S.

She hit Los Angeles like a whirlwind, drinking in the pervasive media culture and cutting-edge fashion. Her mercenary savings have been devoured by a love of gambling/clubbing and an inability to do more with her days than read scandalous gossip online. Without the discipline of the unit keeping her focused, Xinzhi is something of a slacker. Now, running low on cash, hunger is what gives her focus.

That was where I'd left her backstory for the other game. Presumably, she struck out in L.A. and has come slinking back to Hong Kong.

Intersted in making a technomancer that is very unorthodox that is bonded with a sprite, resonance bond. The sprite wants to learn more about metahumanity through the technomancer who interacts with the world as a street sam and in return learns more and more about the matrix and the magic within it through the sprite.

I don't know name yet, just jotting down concepts but he calls the sprite Randal, name the mancer gave to him.

Most likely it'll be one of the two in the sig, like I said before. Kind of leaning toward the mage, but the other one is my favorite SR character I've ever made (the version is without the karma earned in prior PbP). They are both related to each other--cousins.

I'll throw in a Face-Gunslinger with a penchant for gambling named Ace. He'll be awesome.

jonathanc: Great! I can only suggest that you fill in some details for her contacts. If not, though, I will just make them up myself. Also, I assume the dependent is her mother?

vinnmun: Interesting! I haven't read all of Unwired, so I'll have to brush up (my matrix knowledge in general is sub-par). But, I like the idea. Keep my updated as to exactly what type of bond you're thinking of.

BigGuns: A mage will be useful for this campaign, but choose whichever character you like. I don't foresee no mages or too many mages presenting a big problem.

Glad to see so much interest here. Completed characters posted first  will get priority, though I may allow some time to choose the most interesting/diverse group.

Yeah, I'll go with Frostmane--the mage. Will be the first time I've actually played a mage in 4th, but gotta start sometime--just need people to bear with me a bit. Background isn't listed, but hers is rather uneventful for the most part. Nothing really major for her, and she was rather sheltered considering the rarity of Awakened people. She really just kind of 'fell in' to this sort of work due to the influence of the other character in the signature.

*thinks for a moment* Now I'm wondering if family members need to be bought as contacts...

Well, I'd probably buy up different contacts, since you're giving us 10 free points for them. The dependent was actually a boyfriend (her mother is still active as a merc), but I might shift those points around.

"Ace" or  "Slim"
Augmented Human
27
Northern UCAS

Tall, slim, with a roguish grin and a short-brimmed fedora cast down over his brow while he rolls a coin over his fingers. He has a pack of cheap smokes tucked into the folded up dress shirt that pokes out of his sleeveless vest, a gold chain running from breast pocket down and across. His hip was graced by a plated revolver of rather antique design but lined with ornate circuitry-designs, betraying the modern origin.

Gonna throw my hat into the ring as well. I've been pre-making some characters to learn the system so if you want standard characters, I can give you a Irish spirit-summoning astral artist dark elf, or a professional and well-mannered spec ops gone merc (basically a street samurai with a smattering of face). If you're interested in weirder characters, I have a hacker AI or a SURGE adept. The adept though is a bit out there. He was meant to be a genetic hybrid between dragon and metahuman DNA and escaped from where he was created. The SURGE and adept abilities are meant to be fluffed as superior dragon genetics, so it's kind of a long shot as to whether it fits in anywhere really.

If you correspond often and/or they are useful in the line of work, then yes.

When you say 400 + 10 for contacts, can we spend more on contacts if we wish?

You may spend anywhere from 10-410 BP on contacts!

410 might be a little excessive...

I shall indulge in a little thinking time and come up with something. Probably a bounty hunter or a thief... the stats overlap disturbingly well in places ;)

Just a question, could we get 10 or charisma x 2 in contacts, whichever is higher? It would help my face a lot hahaha.

If there's still room, I've got a covert ops type I'd love to get a chance to play. Would work well in Hong Kong.

Sorry, no more than 10.

I really want to cap the group at no more than 5, but I'm gonna keep recruitment open for a little while, so anyone who's interested please post/link to a character. I'll try to choose PCs whose skills don't overlap too much, with priority going to those who post first.

BigGuns: Keep in mind, the Biosystem Overstress quality is only for characters with at least two pieces of bioware.

thecommabandit: An AI or SURGE character will be hard to do. Looks like we're going to have a few gunslingers, so the summoner might be a good fit. Then again, if you think the merc is more interesting, do that.

Um, I really have a technomancer urge today, so a Hacker/Rigger suits me well. A few questions though:

Would you allow additional echoes to be purchased at the cost of 15 karma each, as per unwired? Would you allow me to take a level of resonance in lieu of an echo? Would you allow Machine Sprites to control a drone, since they gain an autosoft equal to rating as a complex form? Sorry, an overwhelming slew, but you know... Stuff...

Also, does Genetic Heritage provide you with a gene treatment free of essence, or just nuyen?
Title: Re: [Recruitment] The pimple on China's backside
Post by: vinnmun on <04-04-12/1432:24>
Man doing what I plan to do is going to be tough but essentially the goal is going to be me tackling people and black hammering them with my fault sprites as a backup later down the line. But it's going to be an archer based sam that summons sprites and have them do the hacking and him having no clue how to do it. It be fun and interesting as we go along in the adventures because it's different.

Street sam / Technomancer hybrid built....how would you like the sheet delivered? I have the character in chummer.
Title: Re: [Recruitment] The pimple on China's backside
Post by: bangbangtequila on <04-04-12/1456:39>
Well, I was planning on being a straight hacker, and using Sprites to run drones as my physical contributions. After we gain some Karma I would be more combat ready by investing in Acceleration and Biowire, allowing me to run my Matrix Initiative and up to 4 passes in meatspace. The main boost is being able to force people into Hotsim...

Post by: vinnmun on <04-04-12/1611:09>
nnnoo!!! We have the same idea....i think. I was planning on getting skinlink & than resonance trodes to force people into VR. Sprites are doing the hacking. Come to think of it 2 technomancers would be kind of fun in the matrix world. lol

I would be very interested in joining this campaign. I was just reading through the sample magical groups in Street Magic the other day, and "The Sons of Thunder and Sea" got me pumped about Hong Kong. I'll present a magical threat hunter once I get him written up.

Yes.

Quote
Would you allow me to take a level of resonance in lieu of an echo?

No. Higher levels of resonance have more value than echos, as reflected in their karma cost  :P

Quote
Would you allow Machine Sprites to control a drone, since they gain an autosoft equal to rating as a complex form?

I did not realize the rules on this were so vague! It seems like this is allowed, however, you must be actively subscribed to the drone (unless it is a remote task), and the sprite only gets one autosoft. Fair?

Quote
Also, does Genetic Heritage provide you with a gene treatment free of essence, or just nuyen?

The rules about genetech and essence are kind of silly and inconsistent. But, the description of Genetic Heritage does not mention essence, and I feel like it would if this was intended. So, just nuyen.

On the subject of two technomancers: I am not against the idea, but it would be better if one was focused more on street-samming and the other on hacking.

If you've got a character completed, post it here!

Righto, finished my character:

Name: Connor MacMagan
Alias: Menzo
Race: Elf (Dark One metavariant) [35 BP]
Sex: Male
Nationality: Tir na nÓg
Lifestyle: Squatter
Karma Spent: 0
Physical Description: Connor is tall and wiry, mostly skin and bones. His body is covered in vellus hair a shade of blue so dark that it's nearly black. Has has bone white hair, usually tied up in a loose ponytail. The look on his face at most times could be described as “cheeky” or “shit-eating grin” depending on how much you like him. His eyes are bright violet. His clothing is cheap, shitty and never clean. He constantly smells of cigarettes with an undertone of spirits (alcohol, that is).
Background/Personality Connor was born SINless in Tir na nÓg and quickly adapted to the lifestyle. He became a happy-go-lucky squatter, living wherever he could for however long was convenient and easily holding down jobs as bartenders in clubs thanks to his nocturnal biorhythm. In his spare time, usually during the few hours before dawn, he explores the urban landscape, finding out of the way spots, hiding places and safehouses... and then tags them in the astral like a ganger does with spray paint. He has a variety of symbols he likes to leave in places he's been, ranging from simple tags, situational hieroglyphs to complex works of art. The name tag he leaves at the artist spots is 'Menzo'.

Personality-wise, Connor is laid-back and almost lazy. He doesn't really give a shit about moving anywhere in life, all he wants is to continue living and continue making astral art. That said, he dabbles in the illegal side of things for a bit more extra cash. The minimum wage is bullshit.

Frick. The 15BP cost for Magician is factored in, I just didn't hit the 1 key. I knew there was a limit for negatives but I couldn't find it. And I always think spells cost 4 for some reason. Everything else is just a math error. Thanks, gonna fix it now.

FYI for those playing mages: Most of Hong Kong will have +1 background count aspected to Wuxing, neutral for everyone else. Downtown is highly susceptible to mana surges. Kowloon Walled City mostly has a +2 background count (not aspected, at least not for PCs).

I'll put together a backgorund and the Resonance Bond later tonight.
Name: Hammor "Grind" Grimes
Race: Dwarf

Background:
Hammor lived in the Appalachian Mountain area for sometime learning the trade of a huntsmen. He eventually went to school and took his talents in hunting to the big time, winning many amateur tournaments in archery. Later down his life, he started down the slippery slope of being a chiphead. And surfing through the Matrix, getting down his media kick, the Crash of '64 happens and his life turn what looked to be the worse, being scorched and making his noggin soft, he was hospitalized but lucky to be alive. Soon after that he went to rehab, beating his addiction to BTLs and finding out, that he has wierd powers with electronics. Surfing the trix during his continuation of his studies he came across what he thought was just an archer enthusiast, but soon was revealed to be a free sprite. He could not understand its name, so he named it Randal and soon became chummey friends over the trix. Randal knew Hammor to be a mancer and due to their friendship, it wanted to learn more about metahumanity and in return he would teach Hammor what he is capable of. During all thing, their friendship continued to flourish and Hammor decided to move to southern Asia to make a career out of his outdoorsman skills. He started off in Thailand and soon moved to Vietnam being hired by multiple places to tour guide through the jungles and take some of the "Big Wigs" into "dangerous" animal hunting....all pretty much canned hunts for the most part. He's rubbed shoulders with man and always became the go to dwarf for all hunting company form all these execs looking for a rush. He got help to move to Hong Kong and was looking for something else, he started to get back into competitions...but was soon realizing he was out of touch. Shadowrunning can score him some good dough, and he felt he has the skills and balls to give it a go. He soon realized it was tougher than usual, and is still a bit wet behind the ears, but with Randal by his side....he feels he will be alright.

So it looks like we've got a sam, two mages, probably two technomancers (BigGuns still needs to modify his character, though). One problem: none of these characters has a Charisma over 3! If you want to go back and play that face/gunslinger, bangbang, it would probably be a very helpful character. Anyone else who's still interested: I may still consider new characters if they're interesting and useful.

Vinnmun, I'm gonna have to nix that Incompetent (Artisan) quality. I can't think of any situation in which it would be a hinderance to a technomancer.

Man, armorer is kind of a stretch too, considering your character doesn't even use guns! But, it also applies to armor, and I suppose it applies to bows, plus your low logic makes it more of a flaw. So I will allow that.

Did you realize that if you want your resonance to be 5, you must buy it at 6 and then subtract essence loss? I'm adding up your numbers and it looks like you didn't do that.
Title: Re: [Recruitment] The pimple on China's backside
Post by: vinnmun on <04-07-12/0009:44>
Am I 10 too much than? Chummer reduces my max by 1 so I buy the 4 ranks at 4 and than the 5th is at max. I can send you the txt that's on the sheet if i open it on notepad if you wanna take a look. Chummer or a setting my be fucked up.

Breakdown I have in front of me: 170 Primary Att, 65 Special Att, Positive quals 30, Negative Quals -35, Contacts 13, Nuyen 38, Skill Group 20, Active Skills 76, Sprites 8
Title: Re: [Recruitment] The pimple on China's backside
Post by: eighth circuit on <04-07-12/0027:51>
Ah I see, looks like it's an optional setting in Chummer. You should be spending 65 BP on resonance. The numbers work out then (it's taking me a while--I'm adding everything up by hand!)

Also, I would suggest making one of those bound sprites a paladin. Your character is mad vulnerable to matrix attacks. Your decision, though!

Edit: How do you get 170? I have 180 = 10+40+20+40+10+20+10+30

I cyberadept as a stream because it just makes sense with this character so it's all the basic sprites from the corebook. It would be fault sprites for my matrix cybercombat sprite if I remember correctly, I'll just compile one if i need it. I don't look to be getting into crazy stuff until later on. when I get the exhoes I want...Fault sprites are my go to. But I understand where you going with that.

Alright, all is well. I decided to go with the Fault Sprites, since I can use them to guard em in the matrix or my fellow technomancer teammate. Background is up. One thing I will add is that Randal the Free Sprite never revealed or explained to him how Free Sprites get free or how he got free in particular. So maybe you can work something with that, which is very open and I'm game for whatever if this goes deeper than one mish.

Well, I may or may not be a technomancer. I was under the impression Eighth wanted my Gunslinger/Face?

I'll build Slim, put him up, and then put up Jax 2.0 and let the people decide.

BigGuns bowed out, so we are back down to 4 or 5.

Re: faces: I don't want to insist on any specific characters--it just seems like a group without any social skills will be at a pretty big disadvantage.

I would like to get this started by the end of the week, so everyone post your characters. So far we have:

jonathanc/Xinzhi - mostly complete, I believe he just wanted to change some contacts around? You still here, jonathanc?
vinnmun/Hammor  - post the details of your free spirit and resonance bond
thecommabandit/Menzo - complete

bangbang, Mirikon, or anyone else who wants in, please post your characters this week! Actually, I plan on having each character start on their own mini-adventure, so each player can get going as soon as they're ready--let me know.

Got the basics up here (http://bit.ly/Hwhs51). Will get a background and description, as well as a description of the lifestyles up shortly. Basically, Kitten is a covert ops type, though she can play the face if needed. Also, skillwires means she can customize her skillset to the task at hand, if she has the money. Also have a subscription to Horizon's Singularity service, so I can rent skillsofts.

I posted it on the background of my character, but if you wanted more detail here it goes.

I'm actually kind of stumped, I was thinking of something to help him register sprites or compile them in return whatever I compile or register, Randal would auto use one of it's success to do a bidding of his own on what he thinks would benefit or help Hammor.

I mean going through resonance bond a few times...i'm slowly thinking this would not be so hot for the technomancer i made. Anyone else got an idea or suggestion for this?

That sounds good. Randal will add all of his resonance to your fading resistance pool for compiling/decompiling--in return he gets one service from each sprite, in addition to your providing sprites for reassembling. Sound ok?

Also, I think you are still 10 points over the limit. I count 180 for your primary attributes.

Yup, my bad...his strength is 6 not 7. Updated the sheet.

Also the fading sounds good to me. Compiling/ registering or did you actually mean decompiling a sprite.

As a side note, Thecommabandit, the Addiction quality description actually specifies that Cigarettes and Alcohol are invalid as choices. You have to pick something that has a real and dangerous effect. So none of that special chewing gum either ;)

Did anyone actually end up on a mage?

Wrong, tequila. Alcohol is valid, nicotine is not. In fact, it mentions Alcohol in the same breath as drugs and BTLs.

Quote from: SR4A, pg 93
Addiction
Bonus: 5 to 30 BP
A character with the Addiction quality is addicted to alcohol, drugs, BTL chips, or a similar substance with a detrimental effect on the character’s health (note that nicotine, caffeine, and sugar do not count). The value of this quality depends on how severe the addiction is: Mild, Moderate, Severe, or Burnout. Additional addiction rules, including listings of drugs and roleplaying guidelines, can be found on pp. 256–259.

He may be thinking back to the original SR4 core book which I believe did nix alcohol as a viable choice for the quality.

Aside from the beginning, where your character will be on their own, I don't want to focus on solo adventures, just because it seems hard enough to move the action along in an online game when everyone's not all doing their own thing. I mean, very small encounters will be no problem, but adventure-length episodes featuring a single character will probably not happen. Then again, a character's solo actions might turn into something that involves the entire group.

Also, I never understood why tobacco and caffeine addictions aren't allowed. The people I've known going through nicotine/caffeine withdrawal definitely had negative dice pool modifiers.

Withdrawal maybe, but taking them is too harmless. The others you want to take, even though they are harming your body on the spot, while smoking doesn't impede you, only many years later... that's not worth any BP.

I wondered why too, but after looking through the drugs listed in SR4 and Arsenal, I can see why. All of the drugs have immediate negative effects. You crash on all of them. Nicotine and caffeine might have bad withdrawal symptoms, but they don't really have any crash after they wear off.

I've changed the addiction to deepweed. It lets me keep the whole smoking schtick.
