And his name is J.J. Abrams.
It's circulating around that J.J. will direct the new Star Wars movie, the one slated for a 2015 release. I say circulating as all I've found in the news is the ever popular "...sources have confirmed...".
So. What does this little slice of Nerdom think?
-
Tiny Tina, your thoughts? (http://youtu.be/BeqYf70fC2E?t=6m13s)
-
Pretty optimistic/hopeful regarding this and the transfer of the IP to Disney.
-
First reaction was "not another Star Wars movie" (and I do love Star Wars). Then I remembered Lucas wasn't going to ruin it and I feel much more optimistic.
-
Anybody already knows which one they're going to do? I hope for the Thrawn trilogy, or maybe Jedi academy.
-
Nothing EU, so the novels are all out.
-
I'd like to see something in the pre-rule-of-two era. There's so much material there, as long as they don't make it a derpy sith vs jedi battle movie. Hopefully with less midichloreon (or however you spell that) garble and more subtext/intrigue. Bring back the mysterious space wizard, if it's not too late. Whatever happens, at least Lucas is out. (knocking on wood!)
-
If this turns out to be true, then Abrams will be helming both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. I'm not sure if that's giving one man too much control over nerdom, or just setting him up to be crucified at the whim of the fanboys,
-
No . . . no . . . no.
While J.J. Abrams himself may be - and probably is - far from the worst choice of directors*, the idea of Disney doing any Star Wars films is, IMO, a disaster of astronomical proportions. There were reasons why Tolkien specified that Disney was to have no part in any film(s) based on his works, and I believe that should carry across to anything else with a similarly wide fanbase. Disney's film-making ethos is just too far away from what would make more SW films worthwhile. Again, IMO.
* I shudder to think of Tarantino or Michael Bay set loose on SW.

Are you willing to be more specific with your thoughts on this, or sources for your opinions?
-
My opinions are based on ~40 years of watching Disney productions. Maybe there's stuff in them I'm just not connecting to.
Maybe the Disney execs will take a "don't fix what ain't broke" approach.
Short version, I'm not writing off the proposed films before I've seen them. I'm just not expecting a high standard.
-
I just wonder if the lightsabers will give off a lense flare?
;D

The Avengers would like to have a word with you.

As far as I can tell DIsney and Lucas have the exact same ethos, creating franchises that are merchandised to ridicules levels.

Whereas I think it'd be awesome for Abrams and Bay to both work together on it! :D
-
"Hi, yeah, Michael Bay... How'd you like to blow up the third Death Star? And a bunch of smaller, other things."
That's about all I'd trust him with.

And stuff like that is part of the problem these days. Everyone thinks they're qualified to be a critic on something, be it books, movies or whatever... Annoys the **** out of me...
I mean come on, the point of watching a movie is for entertainment, not for sitting there and picking it apart.

That's often where we find entertainment value. And, for what it's worth, I am qualified to be a film critic ... and so are you. We watch movies, and that's all the qualification that's required.

All right, for the sake of argument, I'll accept that some can find that entertaining, but what's the point in blasting and flaming so hard trying to spoil the movie or book or whatever to try to make other people not give it a chance? (And yes, a lot of times that crud does happen. They'll even go so far as to call people who do like it stupid or any number of other insults.)

Welcome to the Internet, where nerds and geeks with skewed senses of priority will compare the prequel trilogy to the Holocaust and the Star Trek reboot to the Killing Fields.

Try being an author.

i know its ST sacrilige, but i liked the reboot, Kirk doesnt seem as arrogant now, and Spock seems to realize earlier in his life that he DOES have emotions. That said, i'm kinda worried about Disney getting SW, but its just the general unease of something new and different.
-
I shudder to think of Tarantino ... set loose on SW.
I'd pay to see a Tarantino production where the prime protagonist was Sith. Just not Lucas' concept of Sith.
-
I've been a Trekkie since I was five months old, and I fraggin' loved the 2009 film. It was hella fun. So it mgiht be sacrilege to some, but I wonder if they, in fact, watched the same show I did growing up.
-
It happens when people stop watching movies to have fun, but watch them to make sure the movies conform to their own misconceptions.
See : Any sci-fi sequel ever.
Even fantasy movies aren't safe. I thought The Hobbit was one of the most fun movies I've seen in years, yet people got pissy because it wasn't what they had imagined.

true. Take the 2009 Star Trek movie for instance. I liked the movie as such, but I didn't like the fact that it didn't fit with the rest of the canon star trek as it was established before. But it still wasn't a bad movie (as long as you consider it an alternate reality, and in Star Trek you actually can).
And if you don't like it, don't go watch it (a reason why I still haven't gone to see the Hobbit).

Considering that they had the old Spock coming back in time and such, I would imagine that it is a complete 'reboot' of the entire setting. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

More than "you actually can" in this case. It's clearly established within the film itself that it's an alternate reality from the previously established canon. In the JJ-verse, things are clearly progressing quite differently, but it's easy to find the point of divergence.
And, like I said, it's clearly stated in the film that it's an alternate reality.

Yes and no. The original continuity goes on (the Star Trek Online MMORPG is set in the "original" universe, for instance, and most of the novel series still deals with the "original" coninuity). It rebooted the film series, yeah, but unlike, say, the Battlestar Galactica reboot, it didn't completely ignore, rewrite, and "reimagine" the setting. It just created a new playground next to it.
I'm going to shut up and go back to my little nerd corner now....

Oi! Quit shovin'!! There's room for both of us over here!!

It was, in fact, a rare example of an in-setting reboot.
Time travel resulting in an alternate reality.

Providing Abrams can:
a) oversee the writing of a plot that vaguely hangs together.
b) oversee the writing to make sure that any relationship building doesn't come across like it's written by someone who's only ever observed loving relationships through distorted binoculars
c) shoot the film so dialogue isn't just a tedious over the shoulder shot - reverse shot cycle
d) hit Lucas in the face with a nailbat every time he turns up and offers an opinion
e) focus slightly less on ridiculously over-long and unengaging lightsaber fights for the sake of Qwewl choreography
It should be good entertainment.
-
Okay, we already know that Abrams can reignite nostalgia due to Star Trek and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (the one that I consider closest to the original TV series). So I'm holding out hope.
-
...and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (the one that I consider closest to the original TV series).
Still haven't seen that one, though I did watch it (flight movie). Worth seeing?

I say it is well worth watching. It's even on Netflix so you don't have to pony up the cash.
As far as Star Wars is concerned they will make a "safe" one with just the basics to get people back to the idea of a great Star Wars movie. (I say great because I did like the prequels.) After that all bets are off. J.J. will probably be good for only one movie anyway. After that they will go to different directors like they did for the original trilogy.
-
Given that Star Wars is modern retelling of Space Pulp, they should be able to do okay as long as they keep to that general theme.
and keep Lucas Tranqed and gagged for any thing more than just hitting the general tropes

You know...when I was one of the Narnia 2: Prince Caspian extras, we were supposed to play band of drunken Telmarine soldiers. Having some experiences with being drunk, we used every piece of our talent to make it feel right. Well assistant came to us, saying:
Boys, this is Disney. It is christian movie, you cannot look that real
So...this is what I think about Disney and whatever this company swallows...

So...this is what I think about Disney and whatever this company swallows...
Sure, the latest Marvell movies reeked Disney. So did Clerks, Pulp Fiction, Halloween: The Curse Of Michael Myers, From Dusk Till Dawn, Apocalypse Now Redux, and pretty much everything else Miramax released between 1993 and 2010. Let's also remember Hollywood Pictures and their movies. Whenever I watch Judge Dredd the first thing that pops into my mind is Walt and his company. Same thing with Touchstone pictures. Another Disney company, in this case they're simply a label rather than a division of Disney.
So. Going to continue to rip on the Mouse, because you worked on a project that had the Mouse's name on it? Or are you going to understand that Disney makes a whole lot of great movies under different names, because they are just that damned good at both making money and maintaining their image?
-
Fanboy please...
EDIT: But OK, for peace sake, Ill wait how this would look like and then I will make my opinion. BTW. I always like that when someone posts: "This is what I think.." someone else always hurries in with his own opinion and starts to convience the other about his truth. No. My experience. My opinion. Maybe you dont like it, and maybe I`m even wrong, but it is my right to be mistaken. ;)

I just want to see the Falcon again.

(I feel compelled to point out that any true lover of sci-fi would never start arbitrarily comparing series and universes to find out which one is better, as that's a disservice to both, but since there hasn't been any STvSW debate anyway, it's not that important)
JJ Abrams is a dangerous case. He needs to have his creative license restricted, because whenever he gets too much freedom, he trashes every project. Lost was great before the dev team trusted him absolutely, look at seasons 1 and 2 versus seasons 5 and 6. Fringe was the same way. If the people green-lighting either franchise get into the mindset of "just let JJ do what he does", then it will take a nosedive. Because that is what JJ does.

Take my love, take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care, I'm still free
You can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black
Tell them I ain't comin' back
Burn the land and boil the sea
You can't take the sky from me.
Leave the men where they lay
They'll never see another day
Lost my soul, lost my dream
You can't take the sky from me.
I feel the black reaching out
I hear its song without a doubt
I still hear and I still see
That you can't take the sky from me.
Lost my love, lost my land
Lost the last place I could stand
There's no place I can be
Since I've found Serenity
And you can't take the sky from me.
-
Amen.
-
Lord, please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the firepower to make the difference.

I imagine I will get some flak for this but I want to see a bad ass gungan in the new series. Somebody that makes people go "Yeah that Jar Jar guy was an annoying pest but THIS guy... This guy is awesome." I mean he is the only alien other than Chewie (and that speaks basic (english to you non star wars people.)) that spends any serious time on screen for multiple movies and he is at best a nuisance. Hell I would be happy to see more aliens and get to know them. We always see them in the background or for maybe a whole scene but they never take a prominent role in the movies. Show me that sneaky and shady Bothan, that laid back Durros, that loyal and brave Twi'lek and a that analytical Sullestian. In short make the aliens more than just window dressing and sidekicks.
Maybe it is just my inner roleplayer coming out but the star wars movies are like a bunch of 13 year olds playing D and D. All "me but bad ass" humans and the one guy who wants to try something else and is promptly shoved in the figurative corner.
