Additional penalty for 'something in the way' as well, being in the undercarriage, the entire vehicle would be in the way, so that would be another -2, and the threshold would likely go up as well because of that. And that is even assuming there would be anything to notice. Considering that it is a larger vehicle (with a correspondingly 'deeper' undercarriage), there is a good chance that there would be no "bump" noticeable without a close inspection.

Uhm. So just to make sure I get this straight. You are arguing that the GM should not put a bomb underneath the vehicle because the players would not be able to notice it with passive Perception checks, while at the same time basically telling the GM the bomb should not be noticable with passive Perception checks? So he should listen to you on not doing the bomb for listening to you on not having the bomb possible to spot?

Automaton, if you want to run some math, you can use http://www.anydice.com/ with output #d{0,0,1} as entry, then check the odds that someone will roll at most X hits. Multiply the odds for your runners to see the chance at each threshold and modifier that nobody will see it. For example, I simply took output 9d{0,0,1} and took the number listed for "at most 3", then did that to the fourth power to reach that example number of 18% chance nobody spots it.

Okay, if you're seriously going to complain that the GM is fudging things by giving them a chance to notice a 1x1x1dm^3 explosive + detonator + remote control strapped underneath a civilian car, I'm out.

Since you dont know what the situation is, what my campaign is all about and what the players are like, I dont think you havethe right view of the situation on what I should or should not be doing.
Let alone that what I want to or not want to do in my campaign is completely my own concern.

Furthermore I never stated that they are allready in the van, they still need to get to it, I also allready stated that they will have two oppertunities to notice something is seriously wrong.

Oh and since, the people who actualy were helpful, allready helped me out, which again to everyone who did thank you very much.

I figure I'll use the lock button at the bottom of the topic and lock it if I'm allowed to do that.

So Yesterday evening was the big night. The team's recently aquired arch enemy "The Prophet" made himself known to the group by trying to blow them up along with their van.
Luckily the team managed to detect the bomb using scanners and when their opponent noticed (one of his gaents was watching from a distance using a spydrone) he blew the van anyway.

In a torrent of fire and shrapnel as the whole van blew up, everyone was flung away. The Troll managed to throw himself in front of the elf hacker taking most of the damage for her, the Assassin and the teams Face/gunslinger took the most of the blast. Result, no one died, the troll got back up immidiatly with a lot of pain in his back, the elf hacker had allmost nothing due to the troll shielding her, the rigger managed to soak allmost everything and got away pretty good too, the mage was a bit further away and managed to respond and soak the damage well too. Only the assassin and the face were down and dying, but the hacker managed to apply their medical/drone/kit fast enough to stabilize them both.

And then they stole a truck and got the hell out of there anyway.

The DV I used was 22, had they been inside the car I'd have used 29. These are not calculted numbers, but numbers I figured that could possibly kill them, but would also give them a chance to survive. And survive they did.
Tough bunch that.

They also dodged a heatseeker in a chopper earlier that evening, and then jumped from the chopper when two more were shot at them, paracuting to safety...

Their escape plan allmost worked.. not quite, but allmost.
Very much a fun and exiting session. :)
