I tried a search for this, but nothing came up; if it was covered, I apologize. In regards to ammunition for shotguns, can you get shells in all the various types (APDS, Stick-N-Shock, Gel, etc.)? Upon first reading the rules the answer appeared to be no, but upon taking a second look it appears it may be yes. I asked my GM, and his first thought was no as well, and then he read on and thinks it might be yes. I don't see why they wouldn't have rounds available in multiple types, as we do today, but I wanted to make sure so that I didn't buy something that was game legal. Thanks!

I don't see any problems with having more than regular slugs for shotguns (like APDS slugs,  GEL slugs etc)

And I don't think I've read any SR5 rule that would prevent or either... shrug

You can indeed by different types of shells for shotguns. They may be called something different, such as gel rounds being called impact slugs, flechette being called shot, or explosive rounds being dubbed Lock Shock slugs), but they would function the same. Some rounds though won't be of use in most shotguns (like tracer rounds) and so you may rule they such are harder to find or don't exist, but on a whole they are interchangeable.

Strange that SR5 does not have any FA shotguns.

That was my thinking, but the way it reads in the section on shotguns was that they only used slugs generally. Shot could be used, but modern body armor made it fairly worthless and so shot would act like a weaker flachette round. That was what had both my GM and I thinking it would be regular ammo only for shotguns. However when I was looking at ammo in the book, I noticed that the terms round and slug seemed to both be used in the descriptions, which is what lead us to believe that shotguns might indeed have access to the various ammo types.

The thing is, I only get to play Missions games, so I can't really house rule it. For now, until we find out different, my GM is allowing the various types.

The Enfield AS-7 is what my character has, but it fires bursts. I imagine that once the equipment supplement releases, we may see a return of weapons upgrade options, such as changing fire modes.

"Use the Longarms skill when firing shotguns. The stats for these shotguns are for normal slug rounds. When firing shot, use the special rules for shotguns, choke settings, and flechette ammo (Shotguns, p. 180)."

So yes, all ammo types are available for Shotguns. Note that multiple ammo types even call themselves slugs in their descriptions.

It was the same in SR4, really, there was an FA shotgun in Arsenal and special shotgun-only ammo, but shotguns could also handle all normal ammo just fine.

Although they aren't technically tracers, there are shotgun shells (IRL) that include similar functionality. There's no reason they couldn't have some sort of incindiary illuminator (if you're not worried about starting fires), or a passive RFID tag (for a smartlink).

So perhaps the shotgun is still the best one-gun solution.

Oh I'm not arguing that they can't (or even don't) exist, it's just with the shotguns that we have from the main book they really don't have a good use in a shotgun. Once a new gun book comes along (would love for it to be named Weapons World!) we'll no doubt see a few full-auto assault shotguns that tracer rounds would work wonderfully in. Personally, I just want to get my hands on some Big D's Temper rounds again. Loved those things.

Yeah, that quote from P. 180 was what had us slightly confused, with the reference to normal slug rounds or shot. It was seeming to indicate that those were the only two available, but we were reading too much into it I guess. It was the ammo descriptions that had us thinking the initial impression was wrong.

The shotgun with flechette ammo and a wide choke is one of the most under rated squad support weapons available to runners...
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Yeah, it's intended to simply mean "these are for regular rounds, just like with normal guns, flechette uses different rules". It doesn't mean you can't get anything but regular rounds or flechette.

Actually, I had the thought of "Full Automatic Shotgun w/ Shot" being your most lethal weapon versus large mobs.

Are AP flechettes no longer a thing or is there no AP shot?

Depends, what does the flechette page (180) say about it? And what does flechette ammo's description say?
