Reading up on programs, why did they create common programs and hacking programs when you can only use them on a Deck or RCC?  It almost looks like the common programs should run on commlinks also.

Commlinks are already running all the software they can; one of the uses of cyberdecks, accordingly, would actually be for more intensive editing tasks and such.

It just bugged me that something that could only run on a restricted piece of equipment would itself not be restricted.

And now I'm reminded of a standup bit about how we don't need gun control, we need bullet control...  :P

The hacking programs would be a different matter, but for the non-security related uses there wouldn't be much cause to control them.

Once you have your license for the deck, they don't need to restrict the programs running on the deck (for completely legal purposes). Of course, if you're using the deck for security work, you have to get your licenses for your anti-hacking programs.

Guns work similarly. Many of the accessories are unrestricted, but the guns they would go on are restricted.

Makes sense, still seems like some of the programs would be useful to someone just using a commlink, such as Browse or Encryption. Maybe they'll create an option for it in Data Trails.

Oh, I agree with that. Supposedly the commlink is already using as optimized software as possible for it, but hopefully in Data Trails they'll add a way to tweak programming in commlinks (+2 here, -2 there) at the least.

I seem to remember that  was a note about modified commlinks somewhere but i don't remember where

They could be useful, but the commlink's not capable of it.  The person that needs processing power would be wise to get a machine (deck or RCC) that has it.

I'm sure we'll see more in Data Trails, but I sometimes miss the old vid units of SR2 and SR3.  Terminals should absolutely be a thing in SR5, but there isn't anything in the core book.  I'm hoping that we see terminal rules in Data Trails.

Your Commlink’s Matrix Attributes
Your gamemaster will occasionally ask for one of two Matrix attributes: Data Processing or (if your hacker isn’t doing her job) Firewall. Unless your commlink is a custom job, both of these attributes are equal to your commlink’s rating. Just keep a note by your commlink entry in your character sheet’s gear section.

guess need data trails, sigh

Or houserule in custom commlinks - I think that line exists, for now, for the benefit of GMs who want to do just that.

I expect we'll see something like basic Data Processing and Firewall modules, Sharing modules, Program rating modules, along with raw processing and memory modules that let you set up an attribute array.    Deck/RCC building rules will very likely mean the ability to build combination deck/RCCs; potentially, there may also be an easy in for people who have call for a limited Sleaze or Attack rating.

"I think all bullets should cost 5000 dollars. 5000 dollars for a bullet. You know why? Cause if a bullet cost 5000 dollars, there'd be no more innocent bystanders."

Words to live by :)

Sorry, carry on.

I just posted a suggestion for improving device statistics in this thread, which may or may not be of interest. I too was bummed when I realized programs could no longer be run on commlinks, but it thematically fits with the new Matrix security protocols; no more scriptkiddies, and much tighter control over who does what as decks are restricted by law.

Not an elegant solution, but a very typical politician response to a problem in my view.
