The next level up is silver, so it's probably not gray.  Honestly, I just always assumed "standard" was black.  But then, Ebony is the highest one...  Maybe it's copper-color?  So it'd go copper silver gold platinum?  But Ebony isn't the color of astral diamonds...

way back in SR 2 we used the following coding scheme


Plastic Min 0¥ 
Silver Min 5,000¥
Gold Min 20,000¥
Platinum Min 200,000¥
Ebony Min 1,000,000¥

Course they never said what colour the plastic was, but was probably a flat black or grey plastic colour while the better sticks have the faux metal look.

My guess is that a standard credstick is a little like a USB memory stick.  It can come in a wide array of colors, but it's always clearly cheap plastic.  The silver, gold, and ebony credsticks would look like their metallic and shiny counterparts.  I doubt the material is actual gold, silver, or ebony - that would make them incredibly heavy, and prone to allergens.

I always thought of credsticks as not just being pen-sized, but also being pen-like in appearance quality - meaning the basic ones are like the basic whatever color, whatever writing, available in bulk pens that are all over the place (hotels use them so they don't have to be concerned that the customers take them, diners and delis have them, or you can just head into a local shop and buy 10 or 20 or 50, but never 1, for yourself).

And, like pens, there are a lot of ways to customize your own while still having it be completely obvious what "grade" you are working with.
