Looking for info from Dawn of the Artifacts

It has recently come to my attention that one of those missions deals with Shantaya's Compass (which I know from Earthdawn). Can anybody give me a short summary of how it's intertwined with the world in the campaign? Is it just a shiny artifact worth a lot of nuyen or does it actually do something? Why is it important?

The metaplot aspects of the compass (and other artifacts) is covered in Artifacts Unbound, which takes place after the adventures in terms of timeline.
