Welcome to Chapter 2.

IC thread here: http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=18866.0

Chapter 1 was "It Started at the Belmont," and if you're reading this is means you've survived 2 whole days at College Station, usually one of the safest cities in the CAS.  Normally that wouldn't be anything to write home about, but the fact is, you're the lucky ones.  Don't go congratulating yourselves too much yet, though, there's still the actual run to complete.

You can find the Chapter 1 IC thread here: http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=17566.0

And the OOC thread here: http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=17546.0

Karma time.  Everyone gets 3 karma for the run so far.  Jack gets 1 bonus karma for Bookworm surviving her first encounter with automatic gunfire, and Poindexter gets 1 bonus karma for continually making Hopeless one of the most believable and conflicted characters I've ever had the pleasure of "sitting around the table with" in any gaming system I've ever played.

Please post your character sheets below, and refrain from posting in this thread until each player has signed in.

The team so far:
Wind (Missing and presumed dead)
Loki (Missing and presumed dead)
Dantes (Turncoat extraordinaire)
Breeze (Dead)
Hopeless: (Poindexter) Probably the luckiest sonofabitch in the western CAS, Hopeless has a plan and the spirits to see it through.
Error: (GMPC) Hulk Smash or automatic weapons, it makes little difference to him, though now that he's had a taste of what the shadows really have to offer, it will be interesting to see how this chromed combat machine can hold up.
Bookworm: (JackVII) Studious, articulate, and while new to the game, it's best not to underestimate this little dwarf, or her magical abillities.
Archive: (Ryo) Breeze thought she was the best decker he ever met.  Little did he know this little techomancer has some tricks up her sleeve he never even considered.

Antagonists

Retro-Futurists: neo-fascists who worship good chrome and a human genealogy, this group has been receiving a lot of bad press lately and for good reason.  Still, it's unclear if their goals are as simple as genocide and/or slavery for all awakened and metas.
Big Daddy: A freelancer?  RF scum?  The team has cost this little pervert quite a bit in the ¥ department, to say nothing of what they've done to his pride.  So far, he's proven to be an adequate rigger with deep pockets and a short temper.
Dantes: the only character to make an appearance as a team member and an antagonist.  Who knows what his long game is, or his real employer.
Las Putas de la Muerte Shaman: (Geeked)
The Driver Thug: She tried to geek the mage first, and failed.  Still, she's damn quick, and if she's still out there, who knows what she'll be capable of next.
Dr. Leonard Drampe: Antagonist?  It's likely, and the team's been acting as if this is the case.  He's dirty, if only the they could prove it, and at the end of the day it is his department's deepweed they're after.  Better tread lightly.

Allies

Dr. Kenneth Bauchon: Nice enough guy, if a bit of booze and another word that rhymes with "booze" hound.  He's the man with the inside info, and he desperately needs the team to succeed here, or he'll lose a lot more than a hand.
Ticker: A street doc who saved Hopeless' life, Ticker is the good kind of Christian who runs a clinic in College Station to pay for his street clinic in the DFW.  If Bookworm wants to get patched up, he's the guy to do it.

- Eiroa, Female Elf Fixer (4/1): Eiroa’s a small time fixer plying her trade in the vicinity of College Station, Killeen, and Waco. She occasionally subcontracts to other fixers in the big cities of DFW, Houston, and the parts of Austin still under CAS control who need additional talent for a run in her area of operation.
- Professor James Billings, PhD, Human Male Professor (3/2): Professor Billings is Delilah’s graduate studies mentor in the Computer Science & Engineering department. As Chair of the CS&E Department, he has a good understanding of the internal politics of Texas A&M as well as familiarity with most of the Hosts comprising the University.
- Tamara Davis, Female Human Talismonger (1/2): Tamara is a recent graduate from Texas A&M. Her focus in college was enchanting and she has just opened her own talismonger kiosk inside Post Oak Mall called the TalisHut. The majority of her wares are fakes to dupe the wealthy, but she maintains a decent supply of reagents, a few copies of spell/focus formulae, and a small number of low-grade foci hidden in the interior of the kiosk behind a high-grade maglock.

DESCRIPTION
The dark-skinned female dwarf known as Bookworm wears her hair in the popular double afro puff style that is all the rage for those who can pull it off. A set of high-tech goggles rest towards the front of her head. A datajack adorns her left temple, the only obvious cyberware she has. A mid-grade commlink on a tight Lycra band rests around her neck, similar to an old-fashioned cameo band necklace. The rest of her outfit falls somewhere between undergrad and grad student:  a grey hooded sweatshirt with the A&M symbol in Aggie Maroon on the front, lightly frayed blue jeans, and gray Chuck Taylor Converse shoes. Not stylish, but perfectly suited to spending hours studying and researching.

ICONOGRAPHY
A puff of smoke reveals a short, squat figure concealed by a high-collared black wizard’s robe and a tan wide-brimmed, pointed hat. The face is covered in impenetrable shadow, the only discernible part being a pair of bright, yellow eyes. The top half of the hat has bent and fallen backward. The robe itself is covered in yellow glowing arcane & mathematical formulae crawling across the fabric. White disembodied gloves serve as hands and the figure appears to have no feet.

PERSONALITY
Mostly abrupt and to the point, Bookworm doesn’t have much time for foolishness. As an information addict, she spends much of her time seeking out new sources of information, to include secrets being kept around her. As such, she tends to be somewhat nosey and curious, never hesitating to ask someone what they are doing. While she doesn’t fixate on knowledge to the exclusion of everything else, it does consume a fair amount of her time. Easily distracted by minute details, it isn’t uncommon for Bookworm to suddenly drop into VR while pursuing some esoteric piece of information.  To be fair, she’s at least gotten much better about not doing that when she’s walking. Largely lacking in social grace, Bookworm tends to feel much more comfortable as an icon in the Matrix. While she understands that the activities she participates in are illegal, Bookworm’s compulsion to seek out knowledge overrides her fear of the consequences of her actions.

BACKGROUND
Delilah was born a member of the Zulu tribe of Azania. Being born a dwarf in a notoriously elven tribe would have once meant a rather quick end to her tale, but she was fortunate. Azania had recently established a program to reduce child abandonment through targeted adoptions. The young dwarf was adopted by a pair of renowned and affluent musicians living in the Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vaal sprawl and grew up sheltered, if largely left to entertain herself.

In her youth, Delilah was fascinated with technology and would spend hours every day on her parent’s data-terminal. Constantly surfing the Matrix resulted in her developing information addiction. Her parents’ focus on their musical careers to the exclusion of their adopted daughter allowed the addiction to fester and grow. They actually exacerbated it by encouraging her to do as much reading and research as she wanted, believing the encouragement would improve her chances at a better education, going so far as to fund a high-quality datajack for her 16th birthday. The device opened a new realm to Delilah, allowing her to mentally control and access the various devices she owned. Pairing the datajack with a cheap, but cold sim-enabled commlink, Delilah started to spend a significant portion of her waking hours running the Matrix. Fortunately, her natural intelligence let her get high marks in school despite her propensity to ignore assignments for topics she felt were more interesting. Earning a scholarship to Texas A&M in the CAS, she left home and started her studies in College Station under a student visa.

College came as something of a shock. Delilah’s bookish nature kept her away from the more social aspects of collegiate life. She found the Midnight Yell Practice to be an annoyance that interrupted her sleep and found the Greek system to be vapid, at best. In addition, her customized general studies coursework was far more demanding than she expected, forcing her to pull back on her Matrix outings.

Tragedy struck as Delilah’s graduation approached, her father died from a stroke but left her a sizeable inheritance. With bittersweet memories, she used a portion of her inheritance to fund her next augmentation: mnemonic enhancement. The money allowed her to have the procedure performed at a relatively high quality clinic. It was during the clinic’s pre-screening process that Delilah learned she was Awakened. After the staff magician assured her that the procedure was unlikely to do any more harm to her magical potential than her datajack already had, she went through with the augmentation.

While recovering and finishing up her coursework, she reapplied to A&M seeking a second degree, this time in Thaumaturgy. Exploring her newfound abilities through studious research, she encountered her mentor spirit, an entity known only as the Great Mystery. The Great Mystery complimented the sacrifices she had made for the sake of knowledge and urged her to continue to dig deeper and study more. During her years of study, she developed into an accomplished mage. As graduation once again approached, Delilah decided to further her studies and applied to a graduate program in Computer Science & Engineering, hoping that staying within the A&M system would continue to provide her with opportunities to research and study the greater mysteries of the world.

It was at this time that she came across someone else who held the Great Mystery as their mentor, a recent graduate of the A&M School of Magic named Tamara Davis. Tamara had recently set up a talismonger kiosk at the local mall following her graduation. It was Tamara who told her that many of the greatest mysteries could only be revealed by getting in the field and getting your hands dirty. With his help, Delilah adopted the handle of Bookworm and began her exploration in the shadows.

== Concept ==
He's quite versatile, perceptive, intelligent, and has a wide variety of abilities at his disposal. He is however, undisciplined and has never really put in the effort to master anything. He's also the luckiest son of a bitch around. That, plus a solid head on your shoulders and spirits watching your back can make up for a LOT of shortcomings.

== Background ==
Ian Bradley was born to a couple of SINless parents. Mom tried to work, but soon it cost more for a babysitter than she'd make in a shift, and so became a stay-at-home mom pretty quick. Dad managed to get work through a fake SIN driving trucks at the dock, till the dock closed down to make room for a new hotel. After that, it was whatever he could hold down, which was never much. When he was about 3, he had a new sister and things got even harder. Before long, dad was taking out of town jobs and staying gone for weeks and even months at a time. They often moved to follow dad's job only to have it finished by the time they got there. Then, dad was off again. It was rough, but they got by.

Ian was always good in school and picked up on things a bit more quickly than the average kids, but never nearly as well as the smart kids. That's why even when he wasn't switching schools, he was switching classes, his teachers always thinking he was either way too smart or way too stupid for this particular class. He learned to make friends quickly, but never close enough to miss them. He learned to pick up new skills in a hurry, but never learned the value of mastering anything. By the time he was 18, he had learned a lot about a lot of things and still didn't know shit about shit. It was about then that he awakened. Of course it happened a week after he'd finally saved up enough money for that shiney new data-jack.

He couldnt weave magic into spells and whatnot, but he COULD talk to spirits and see the astral plane. That was enough for him. Even though he lacked a proper SIN, he managed to get himself a pseudo-secretive janitorial/apprentice position at one of the higher end magical colleges in the country. He was only there for two years before the unthinkable happened.

Walking home one night, a van drove up and stopped next to him and three men jumped out the back in a flash. They were dressed as policlub members, but Ian got the sense that they didnt quite talk the talk exactly right. They duck taped him and brought him to a secluded area under a busy train track, where they tortured and beat him within an inch of his life over the course of several hours. They thought they were leaving him for dead, but a passing taxicab just happened to notice him and make a call to a local street doc who does pro-bono work.

After several weeks of rehab, Ian was back on his feet again. Too afraid to go back home, for fear of running into those men again, he moved to the other side of town and tried to blend into the shadows, vowing that the next band of assholes to jump him are going to regret it. It's been almost 10 years since then, but still, every time he hears a train go by, it puts him right back to that night, shaking and stammering, remember what they kept calling him as they beat him and laughed; "Hopeless".

== Contacts ==
fixer                  2      4
"B Know" An Ork from arlington who used to be big in the drug game. he doesn't like the hassle of dealing with product anymore after a nasty run in with the law. Tries to keep clean, but just can't seem to stay out of the game all the way. A bit overcautious, he never has anything illegal at his house. Ian met him about 4 years ago though mutual acquaintances, and due to the "thug attitude" B Know puts off, Ian doesn't really trust him.
drug dealer      1      2
"Tammy" is a 30 year old elf stripper who lives in southside ft worth. She sells a few of the less hardcore drugs on the side to help make ends meet. She's a very business minded gal, and even though she acts all sweet at work, there's no nonsense with her. Ian dated her sister for a few weeks about 8 months ago and the two have kept in contact on a strictly business level ever since. Never hurts to know who to call for party supplies.
street-doc       3      1
"Ticker" is a former CAS army medic and he'd seen more than his share of action. He doesn't talk about it much, but if you get close to him at all, you can tell there are still some rough memories for him. Maybe he does all that pro-Bono work to try and atone for something in his past. Who knows. He is deeply christian and follows all the tolerant, loving parts of the bible to the letter, ignoring the more rapey and slavey bits.
mechanic         1      1
"Jimbo" specializes in classic automobiles, but he can fix just about anything. He's heavily racist, sexist, homophobic, and generally hateful toward almost everyone who aint white, human, straight, and male, but he knows how to keep his mouth shut and he doesn't gouge on price. That's good enough for Ian for now.
talismonger      1      2
"Elise Glendrose" Works the counter at a high end talismonger shop on the glittering and clean north side of dallas. She's a bit sheltered due to her privileged upbringing, but she has a good heart. Ian met her through an online dating site and both knew it wouldn't work out after one date. She has a certain kind of future in mind for herself and a guy like Ian just doesn't fit. Never smart to throw away a contact though, and Ian has been a loyal customer of hers ever since.

Carl Richter Connection 3 Loyalty 4
The man who rescued her from the gangers who cut up her face, Carl Richter is a ganger himself, head of one of the gangs competing her neighborhood, and at least one with a moral compass of sorts. After seeing her use her Technomancer powers in an attempt to beat off the ganger, he intended to rescue her just to use her powers, but over the years he’s become more of a surrogate father to her. He’s the closest thing that Archive has allowed to become a friend, and only after years of close scrutiny, to his exasperation.

Regland Brock Connection 2 Loyalty 3 Bartender Ork
The bartender at the local bar where Archive picks her poison. A silent stoic type, who generally just listens to what his customers say, he is one of the few people who Archive doesn’t treat with her usual detached coldness.

Hunter Connection 3 Loyalty 2
A hacker that Archive has collaborated with in the past.

Background: The girl now called archive was born to a pair of PR managers who worked for Ares Macrotechnology in Seattle. The two were as ruthless as they came, and psychotic, seeing her as their legacy. Archive didn’t live up to their expectations though, being a frail, bookish girl. They were much happier with their following children, who they found much more easier to mold into their own image, treating Archive more like an unwanted houseguest. Like most people, they were prejudiced against Technomancers, and when they found out about her own talents when she was 12, they decided to get rid off her. Not wanting to dirty their own hands, they dumped her off in some alleyway to be killed by some hired gangers. The only reason she survived is because the gangers wanted to play with her first, why her otherwise pretty face now has several disfiguring scars across it. In a panic, she managed shut down the ganger’s augments and electronics, which is when Richter jumped in, seeing a chance to get a possible ally. Given the choice between going of on her own or working for him, Archive agreed to work for him, but only after he helped her take care of her loose ends. With his help, she personally shot down her parents, the first lives she would ever take, since she left her siblings alive, cutting off her life. After that her luck was still hard. While her relationship with Richter later turned into a friendship as close as either would allow to family, but after what she had experienced, she swore she would never let anyone close enough to betray her again. When she does make friends with people, it is an extremely slow process, and to the majority of people she acts more like a computer, except that computers aren't that biting. She only has really been friends with Richter, although she is acquaintances with several people, including a decker called Breeze.

Personality: Having grown up with unloving parents, and then thrown onto the streets of Seattle, Archive has grown to avoid personal attachments with a passion. Not only does she not want to risk further hurt, but also to avoid having the corps find her. She hasn't quite settled on one Personna quite yet, although she tends to prefer a robed woman in a mask, one-half the Greek mask of tragedy, one-half the one of comedy, joined from bottom to top.

Alexei Barkov - Dwarf Doctor/Surgeon
Connection 3 Loyalty 4

Dr. Barkov was formerly a cybertechnology surgeon and well respected physician by the name of Dr. Ivan Lagunov. However, the good doctor is a man of many vices, and after one bad night involving a great deal of Vodka and the daughter of a Vory lieutenant, he fled Russia, changed his name, and underwent extensive surgery to hide his identity, much of which he performed on himself. (The alcohol really helped.) Now a somewhat disfigured looking dwarf, Dr. Barkov gets by operating in the shadows, as its rather difficult to get a legitimate medical license when you have a fake identity. He keeps his history tight lipped, but his love of alcohol and women have not diminished.

Renegade - Paranoid Decker
Connection 4 Loyalty 3

A matrix contact who knows Jack as Archive, Renegade is an erratic and strange person of questionable morals and sanity. He, if he even is a he, seems to have connections all across the Matrix, with special focus on rumors, politics, corporate movings and conspiracy theories. Jack met Renegade while trying to break into a corporate host, finding the other hacker was already there and fighting off IC. He helped Renegade get out of the host before he got geeked by Black IC, and they've developed a working relationship since, although Renegade adamantly refuses to meet in person, for reasons he will not disclose.

Renegade has a weird manner of speaking and apparent understanding of the world, speaking in riddles at times and referring to reality in a manner that suggests he's not entirely familiar with how it works, or simply perceives it in an alien way. These weird behaviors have led Jack to theorize that Renegade may be somewhat insane, or possibly even a meta-sapient AI.

Appearance

Jack is shorter than average, and very thin in build. He would be considered downright petite, although that's a descriptor he loathes to hear. He has short brown hair and red eyes. His entire body is covered without any skin visible; combat boots, thick camouflage pants, black gloves, an old brown coat over a black hooded sweat shirt with sunglasses to cover his eyes and a bandana around his neck that can be pulled up to cover his face at a moment's notice. There's a red glint behind his pupils that's visible even through his sunglasses, giving his eyes an ominous red shine.

On the Matrix, Jack appears as Archive: A tall, dark figure in a hooded robe that conceals all features and has no face. His voice is featureless and booming, and whenever his robe opens or parts, he is made up of pure data inside, in the vague shape of a generic humanoid. his marks take on the appearance of a dog-eared bookmark, with a barcode across its surface. His programs manifest as solid masses of data, forming into the vague shape of weapons or tools. They flow out from under his robes and coalesce in space around him when in use, then dissolve and return to his body when finished.

Background

Jack was born to a single mother in the Seattle Metroplex in 2047. She claimed his father had been a vampire, and she had been his thrall, which seemed supported by a birth defect that made him allergic to sunlight. Due to vampires being widely feared and mysterious at the time, his family became shunned and he was ostracized and feared by the public. He never made friends as a child, never went to school, instead staying home and learning everything from virtual classes on the Matrix.

By the time he was 8 years old, he spent more of his time in cyberspace than reality, and he used the Matrix as an escape, where he was able to look however he liked and no one judged him for his disability. By the age of 12 he became involved in the decker community, and rebuilt his home cyberterminal into a cyberdeck. He was an effective decker, though a script kiddie, by the age of 14.

At the age of 17, he had built a reputation for himself as a decent decker, and had gotten a datajack implant, only for Crash 2.0 to occur the very next day. Many of his decker friends died in the matrix, and he called in what few favors he had earned to get his mother and himself to safety. With the Matrix in shambles, he turned to his other skills to survive, becoming a drug chemist for a street gang for awhile, before it was discovered he was far better at cooking up explosives.

Sometime around the age of 20, Jack returned to decking, thanks to the rise of the wireless matrix. He was growing tired of being pushed around by the gang and ended up rigging their hideout to explode. That gang no longer exists, and Jack became a free agent, falling into the shadows.

For the past nine years, he has built himself a reputation as both a skilled Decker and a somewhat insane shadowrunner, due to his penchant for blowing up his enemies. He's picked up augmentations to enhance his abilities further, and earned the nickname 'Red-Eye' from the defective cybereyes he had installed, which always seem to glow a bright red when in use. On the Matrix, he goes by Archive, and he does his best to minimize the number of people who know they are one and the same, often claiming Red-Eye is just a demolitions expert and Archive is simply a matrix contact of his.

Throughout his life, Jack has had a sore spot regarding a comparison between himself and vampires, made all the worse by the fact that his mother has always been a fan of vampires and tended to consort with vampire posers. She has always claimed that Jack's father was a vampire, and was thrilled that her son was born allergic to the sun and was a true child of the night. Jack was less thrilled, and has spent a lot of his free time researching vampires thoroughly, both the real thing and the fiction that has surrounded them for centuries. He is thus aware that it is impossible for him to truly be the son of a vampire, as all research suggests that the HMHVV virus renders infected humans sterile, but that won't stop him from stabbing his deadbeat father in the chest with a wooden stake, should he ever meet him in a dark alley.

Hmm... so if Hopeless shares this information, it sounds like (and this is pure conjecture from the information we have) one of the groups we're working against is employing a shadow-team known as the Death Whores [rough translation], likely consisting of three female runners, a sam, a decker, and a [apparently now dead] shaman of Aztlan persuasion. Well, I bet they're none too happy about one of their own getting geeked.

Looking forward to seeing how this conversation with Daedelz goes...

More information on Las Putas is probably available, but it will take a specific Underground, or Shadowrun Community knowledge skill.  You may want to consider tapping your contacts if you'd like to learn more.

@Poindexter, I really like the idea of some cut scenes with Breeze's disposal and the Breeze's message.  The best idea I can come up with is to panel it like I would a comic book script, but I worry that would be a little odd to have 1 post done in that fashion while the others are not.  One possible solution is if Hopeless is distancing himself in some way, or is otherwise having trouble accepting the gravity of this situation, and the paneling would be his mental slide show, as this appears to him like an old comic book, or something.  Thoughts?

ETA: a slightly more "poetic" translation would be "The whores of death."  ;)

ETA: Error's girlfriend is bright enough to know that she should sit tight and wait for him to contact her in events such as these, but if he wants to stay out of the dog house, he'd better make contact at some point tonight.

Yeah, that's what Google Translate came back with too. I thought it was a little wordy, LOL. ;)

ETA: I think the Breeze eulogy could work pretty well. You would just need to send Poindexter whatever Breeze sent him and, assuming it was long enough, Poindexter could post the actions of disposing of his body interspersed with snippets from his death note. Maybe put them in the Matrix/Communication font to visually separate them.

@Poindexter, if you could the following to your char sheet, it'll make things easier on me with the contacts and spirits.  I don't want to lose track of Terrance  8)

-contacts       loy    con

Never hurts to throw away a contact though, and Ian has been a loyal customer of hers ever since.

Air spirit (4)  2 favors
"Whil" Manifests as a small fairy, covered in frost and ice. A mischevious little devil, he enjoys confusing people.

Man spirit (4)  2 favors
"Terrance" Manifests as a colonial era wild west doctor, with long mustache and a lazy eye. Perpetually in a cranky mood, he loves throwing insults at those he helps.

Fire spirit (4) 2 favors
"Some" Manifests as two eyes of flame. Loves the feeling of inflicting pain on others. Rarely speaks, but when she does, her voice drips with contempt.

Done, also no more bound spirits. Used up all of their favors already.

Gonna summon some more in the morning. No binding though. I think I'm done with that. I AM rather interested in the "spirit ally" rules though. That sounds more his style, anyways.

@Poindexter, Gracias.  The Ally Spirit rules look cool.  Better save that karma for Initiation.

As for Breeze's Last Will and Testament, would you like for me to PM that to you so that you can incorporate it into your post, or would you rather I intersperse it with the body drop.  Either is fine with me.

@All, anything I should be working on in the meantime?

Greetings, all. Looks like I'll be picking up the slack with Error's character until such time as he exits stage right (or gets shot repeatedly in the face) and my own character can enter stage left.

I'll likely be playing him a bit differently than the previous player, but hopefully the change isn't too jarring.
