Sword stats are used for one handed swords (such as wakizashi, dao, longsword, machete, etc). Only "4" different stat'd actual tradition swords are the katana, Harold Flinn Rapier, and claymore/nadochi. The Ares Mono sword and memory blades are also stat'd, but they don't fit traditional swords as much.

Agreed. This looks like a 'training wheels' edition, that you can use to introduce someone to the setting, and then shift over to something like 5E or 4E. Like how D&D 5E is best used as training wheels for D&D 3.X.

"Lets eat grandma."
vs.
"Lets eat, grandma."

Punctuation saves lives.

For the most part, all swords are the same.  If your street samurai wants a monofilament-edged wakizashi, give him the Ares Monosword and call it a day.  If you need to, give it an extra -1 AP or a point extra of Accuracy.

I'd take a point of reach (heh, get it?) off the katana and call it a day, personally.

Or just use the Combat Knife as a Sword.

According to Run Faster, the Wakizashi is treated as a normal sword. The Tanto is treated as a Combat Knife.

This is based off the Classic Samurai PACK on page 230.

Basically, only the fluff differs.

So here's a question for you.  Stylewise, a wakizashi is used identically to a katana, so for specialization purposes, would you allow a 'katana' specialization to give +2 to the wakizashi as well?  Typically, I say yes, and I use 'daisho' to help indicate that.

I would allow it, especially as that's a narrower specialization than the ones that are given.

I'd allow it.  It's a very specific type of sword, but all the variations of a katana are almost identical in almost every respect.  I might consider using "daisho" as a specialization, but I might also consider "straight swords" to be a good category for this too.  I mean, hell - people can just use "sword" if they want, though that's awfully vague.

Since we already have Swords as an eligible specialization covering both Katana and Wakizashi, I don't see any reason for a more narrow approach. Specs are supposed to cover a subgroup in a certain category and not some single item, so why would you ever choose something like Katana as spec?

They'd probably take it because there's a huge difference between using a katana/wakizashi and something like a flamberge, tulwar, rapier, longsword or khopesh (to sample from a few larger blade categories).  Stance, blows, balance, very large differences, and don't expect a master of one to be a master of all.

Mechanically, taking a Swords specialty is just fine.  However, it doesn't make as much sense from a thematic perspective.

Got to love the old school samurai ways.

The Katana is a bit tough to hide, but the wakizashi fits into a concealed sheath just fine. Fits well with the traditional usage of the daisho, where the katana was often left outside of samurai meeting halls and neutral ground, but the wakizashi remained within reach.
