Well, I hope this is the right place for this sort of thing. So! I am new to TTRPGs, and have decided I want to play Shadowrun. Thing is, I'm not sure I which edition I should get. My first instinct is to get the 5th edition book (since it's the newest), but I've heard people say that 4th or even 3rd edition was better. So, as someone new who just wants to have fun... what would you all recommend?

Well, if you are new and just wanna have fun I personally would probably recommend 4th edition because it had a decent introduction into the world in the core rulebook which I so badly miss in 5th although I have to say that 5th edition is gameplaywise a lot better. So if you don't mind reading up on the setting in other sources (Seattle 2072 and 6th world almanac) I'd recommend 5th.

Do you have people to play with? If yes, what is their knowledge in TTRPG's? If they are all new I'd also recommend 4/5. If on the other hand you've got someone with experience I'd go with whatever he is already knowledgeable about.

Go with 5th as it is the living edition.
Start slow though and introduce one aspect (matrix, magic, drugs etc.) at a time. Don't rush it.
If Tom Brady’s a Spike Baby, what does that make Brees and Rodgers?

Shadowrun has had five editions.  SR1-3 was a relatively smooth progression.  SR3 is the best out of that set.  It has a lot of good features, but is also pretty complex, with lots of subsystems for things.  With SR4, they drastically revised and, in some cases, simplified the mechanics.  SR3 and SR4 are good choices if you want a game edition where all of the books are out, and where the rules have gone through eratta (and had a lot of people post house rules for them).  They are stable, complete, functional games - and you can probably find a lot of the books used.

SR5 is another drastic revision, although not as drastic as the move from SR3 to SR4 was.  It improves some areas, implements some other ideas poorly, and suffers from serious editing issues (although that is starting to improve).  It is not complete by any means, but what I would consider the main supplements seem to be out (a guns/gear/combat rules book, a magic book, and a book of advanced character options).  The advantage to SR5 is that it is the current edition, the one that will usually be discussed online.  The downside is that it still has a lot of areas that need to be fixed.

I would get 5th - the Matrix mechanics are much better than previous editions and things are more balanced between magic and non-magic compared to 4th.

But 4th had the best setting information in the core. If you can, pick that and 6th World Almanac up, the fluff and information is worth it, but play with the 5th rules.

either 4th or 5th Ed....or both !
both rulessets are quite interchangeable (except for the Matrix Rules)
the 5th ed is the Newer one, but SR4A has a wealth of material and gaming campaigns that You could use for both Editions.
I personally consider the 4th Edition as the Better ones (I  am starting soon a campaign myself which uses a mix of both 4A Rules (ca 75 % )and SR5 Rules (ca 25 % ) and some in between Houserules that starts 2055 )  and think that lots of the SR5 Rules need a new revised Form  (but that is me, I'm used to the Game for quite some Time...OmG , its even quite some Decades  ???  :o....)   on the other Hand I also often hear/read that the 5th Ed Matrix rules are easier

Yeah my group has pulled some things from 4A, namely the costs and availability for ware and foci. We felt like 5th increased the costs (in nuyen and Essence) way too much on too many items, to a point where it'd actively inhibit the wared peoples' ability to do their jobs as they saw it.

Having played a lot of 4th (with a good percentage of that as a hacker) and a good bit of 5th at this point, I feel like the new Matrix rules are a ton better.

One thing to keep in mind is that fluff books are good no matter what edition, although keep in mind that the metaplot moves on - Seattle, for instance, having undergone some significant changes.

Another thing is that a game between friends is not bound by canon.  Feel free to move key events around, or change them altogether.  If you set the game in the 2070's, nothing is keeping you from using some adventures or plot hooks that were set in the 2050's.  Maybe your version of the Tir remains a police state, or your version of Dunkelzahn didn't get assassinated.  I tend to think of any Shadowrun game as an alterverse from the "main" one.

Thank you for the feedback. I think I'll go with 5th edition, and then pick up more books as I go along. Most likely I'll pick up 5th ed and one other book to start with, haven't quite decided what yet.  Browsing the wiki and these boards for more fluff and information respectively for character ideas and information

I'd advise You to pick up the 6th World Almanach this Book is 1/2 Atlas and 1/2 History Book for Shadowrun
and maybe a setting Book ! Schattenstädte (Shadow Cities in US ? ) is a Book with several SR Cities for You & your Group to play in

I personally would also recommend the 6th World Almanac and to get updated on the story (6th World Almanac is 4th edition) read Storm Front, which contains all the information about what happened in the next three years after 4th edition.

next three Years ??
I thought SR4A ended December 2074 and SR5 started in January 2075. And now should be  Beginning of 2077 in Shadowrun
I'm a bit confused how could Stormfront cover 3 Years ....?

Maybe I didn't put that too clearly. SR4A started in 2072 and SR5 started in 2075. Storm Front bridges the gap in between the two editions as in that it tells the stories of the for personally at least most notable changes between the two editions. It doesn't cover 3 years but it covers the most notable changes after 3 years (as to my knowledge sixth world almanac is a snapshot of the Shadowrun world in 2072), maybe I didn't put that too clearly.
