My group's been trying out an alternative addiction system that works like this:

Addiction: Every time you use a drug, make a check (either physiological, psychological, or both as appropriate), with a threshold equal to the drug's addiction threshold (pg. 414 core book). Track your failures. Once you get a number of failures equal to (11 minus the addiction rating), you gain the addiction negative quality at one level higher than your current level for that drug. You can spend 1 karma to buy off 1 failure (or x karma for x failures), although if you gain the addiction quality, you have to buy it off at the usual rate.

Thoughts? I feel like so far it has been a lot easier to use and track, and it's way more stressful/fun for the players.

So you can get addicted to a Force 2 focus faster than to a Force 8 focus?
I think it would be more threatening to keep the 11-Rating in play.

Your system provides more risk, especially when concerning the drugs with a threshold of 3. Do you allow Edge?

I would really suggest avoiding allowing Edge for drug addiction/recovey rolls or it will simply erase a lot of the risk of it.
Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?

To clarify, we still use the "11-x" system from the book, so it's easier to become addicted to a force 8 foci than a force 2, force 8 would only require 3 failures whereas force 2 would require 9 failures.. The ratings are all the same for everything, it just cuts down on tracking what week you last used what drug in, etc. I edited the first post so that it will make sense now, thanks!

I personally don't have a problem with edge use, as it is such a limited resource in terms of its rate of refresh per game session. If people want to prioritize not becoming addicted over other uses, I think it actually adds to the tension a bit, since they know they won't have it later in the day (or even just the combat ahead) to use on something else.

As to the higher risk, yeah that's a big part of why we house-ruled it, drugs felt a little too easy to use before, in the risk/reward sense. The only drug you can get addicted to in 1 shot is Nitro, as it's the only rating 9 that requires both checks.
