Has anything big happened in Detroit that really affects the overall story cause I was planning on doing some stuff there.

Ares Macrotechnology global headquarters are there. With the 7th largest mega corp in the world calling this place home it will flavor every aspect of the metroplex. Beyond that look at the wiki page. Not a whole lot has happened there

Not really. Target:UCAS is probably still 95% relevant.

Shadows of North America and Corporate Enclaves as well as a bit of Target: Smuggler Havens. They were all released after Target: UCAS.

There's nothing in Corporate Enclaves about Detroit. Nor much of relevance in T:SH.

There are a couple of paragraphs about Detroit in Sixth World Almanac, and are of far more use than what's in SoNA.

In my imagination it is a lot like the movie Robocop. Kind of like Chicago without the CZ.  Kind of like it is now.

I haven't found anything more than what other people have already said about Detroit.  Although it's not too far from Chicago, and some of the Bug City stuff could have seeped into Detroit.  But really, a lack of current canon on Detroit can be a bonus because very little you make up will be contradicted by the existing meta.  That's one big reason I chose Detroit as the setting for my current SR campaign.
Three big things about Detroit (forgot earlier and am editing this): 1) there's a wall separating the city proper from the outlying areas (I don't remember the actual name, I just call it The Barrier Wall), so I've made flying drones harder to get because Ares has the Barrier Wall partially to keep to riff raff out; 2) cheap, reliable public transportation called the People Mover is available everywhere in the city, but it has security (not sure if it's supposed to be Knight Errant but I usually use come off brand rent-a-cop Ares subsidiary), and 3) it's a corp city, so Lots of advertisements and targeted marketing based on what the characters have bought over the last couple gaming sessions - I make up an ad sheet for every player in the group for every gaming session, some is generic, some is not (as per targeted marketing) and some is news stories since one character is always watching the news in his down time.  An example of one of these ad sheets is below (if I can figure out how to attach it).
