Ok, so assuming he's running on the Big Star grid, then Wraith's Noise Reduction will let her see anything up to 10km before she starts taking penalties, environmental factors notwithstanding?  In that case, she finds the commlink.  It's currently in the Hotel Heron.

Yeah, her NR should cover distance noise for anything within 10km. She would take a -2 penalty for anything between 11km and 100km and a -5 penalty for anything beyond 100km, assuming no environmental noise, cross grid penalties, or public grid shenanigans.

With that said, I think that only spots the device in the Matrix. In order to get the physical location of the device, I'd have to MARK it a few times and run Trace Icon. Some GMs I've played with allow spotting objects in the Matrix to provide some very rough locational data (for instance: somewhere within 10km to the southeast).

Since I spotted the icon, I'm going to Try Again on Matrix Perception to get some more data about it:
Matrix Perception [INT (5) + Computer (5) - Try Again (2)] (8): 8d6t5 3 (First hit is four from the end)
If I get to keep all three hits, I'd like to know: Device Rating, Firewall, & Grid

Firewall 4 huh? Hmmm... I'm going to wait for Hopeless to reply IC about whether we need to move, but I might take a shot at hacking that commlink to see if there is a calendar and call log file, copy both of them, and do a comparison with the number we have for Oshiro to see if we can determine a pattern of some sort.

My guess is that Wraith would own this commlink, but that is for the dice gods to decide.

Man, I hope so. Wraith is really pretty good at hacking, but since the rules for Matrix stuff essentially boils down to: "If you fail, you're fucked" then you kind of have to adapt to that...

ETA: OK, Wraith is going to take a shot at Minami's commlink, trying to get two MARK on it in one shot.
Cyberdeck: ASDF/4757; Programs: Baby Monitor, Configurator, Encryption, Signal Scrub (Configurator: ASDF/8457, Programs: Decrypt, Encryption, Hammer, & Mugger] ); Noise Reduction 3
Hack on the Fly [Logic (8) + Hacking (6) + Spec (2) + Codeslinger (2) - Two MARKS (4)] (7): 14d6t5 5 (Last hit is six from the end for unknown penalty purposes)

:) What's my OS? I'm running Baby Monitor.

Will edit in my next actions. She's going to dump into Hot Sim and try to Trace Icon and Snoop, then switch back to AR.

Trace Icon [Computer (5) + INT (5) + Hot-Sim (2)] [5]: 12d6t5 2 (Last hit is third from the end for unknown penalties)

He defends with WIL + Sleaze. It's a Data Processing action, so there's no penalty if he beats me other than not getting his location. She'll try again if she fails. If needed, here's that roll:
Trace Icon [Computer (5) + INT (5) + Hot-Sim (2) - Try Again (2)] [5]: 10d6t5 4 (Last hit is the last die rolled for unknown penalties).

OS: 2

First Trace Icon fails.  Second succeeds.  The commlink is currently in Hotel Heron, west wing, third floor.

Great. One note: I don't think I get my specialization for Hack on the Fly for the commlink. The rationale being that a persona is generated whenever you are accessing the Matrix. Fluff indicates this would include AR as well. Other fluff indicates that AR use is pretty much standard, which means that most comms are going to have personas if they are on (unless AR is off, for instance a burner comm you just use for messages and calls). I'm assuming the commcode we had was tied to a persona icon, indicating he's using AR. I don't think it would have mattered (that was a pretty awesome Hack on the Fly roll), but wanted to bring it up for your thoughts.

Here's the next test:
Snoop [INT (5) + EW (6) + Hot-Sim (2)] [7]: 13d6t5 3
I don't want to screw this one up since it is a Sleaze action, so I am going to spend Edge for a Second Chance
Snoop (Second Chance) [INT (5) + EW (6) + Hot-Sim (2) - Previous Success (3)] [4]: 10d6t5 4
Total of 7 hits, which is my limit.
Not sure how to handle unknown noise penalties and Edge. Do you just want to tell me those? Otherwise I may be rolling a bunch of unnecessary dice.

Not sure that I follow.  Are you saying the Specialization should only count if the person you're hacking is using AR at the time?  If so, noted.  I'm not sure that it makes intuitive sense, so we may just give your your Specialization dice for all actions that are HoTF, but I'd like to know if I'm understanding you correctly.

Here's the next test:
Snoop [INT (5) + EW (6) + Hot-Sim (2)] [7]: 13d6t5 3

Wraith will now see what Minami sees.  OS goes up by 1, so 3 total.  I'll keep you apprised IC that comms develop.

Not sure how to handle unknown noise penalties and Edge. Do you just want to tell me those? Otherwise I may be rolling a bunch of unnecessary dice.

You're looking at 5 Noise for distance.  1 for a Spam Zone in a city downtown.  With Wraith's Noise Reduction, I have 3 actual Noise that she's suffering.

Also, Hotel Heron has been added to the map.  Still working on the other locations, but I can speed that up if it will be helpful for you chummers.

Sorry, I should have explained. The specializations for the Hacking skill are limited to icon types in the book. It's not exactly clear if the lists are intended to be limited to what's listed, but I tend to view them as such (otherwise, almost everyone would take Hack on the Fly as a specialization rather than icon type). Wraith's specialization is for Device icons, but when you're in AR (per the fluff) or VR (for sure), the Device icon is replaced by a Persona icon. That's why I am not sure if the specialization should apply. It already applies to everything from independently operating drones, to smartguns, to maglocks.

Wraith will now see what Minami sees.
Just a note, the snoop action only allows me to "intercept Matrix traffic sent to and from your target for as long as you have the target marked. You can listen to, view, or read this data live, or you can save it for later playback/viewing if you have something to store it on (your deck will do). I assume that is limited to active calls, videochats, and messages sent/received. I think I would have to Control Device and turn his commlink's camera or microphone on if I wanted to see or hear what was going on around him.

You're looking at 5 Noise for distance.  1 for a Spam Zone in a city downtown.  With Wraith's Noise Reduction, I have 3 actual Noise that she's suffering.
OK, with the Noise, I only got 6 hits on the Snoop test, if that matters. Thanks!

The Matrix... wheeee!

Understood on the Specialization.  That helps.  Thanks.

As for seeing what Minami sees, I should have been more clear.  I will only be alerting you to matrix traffic to and from his comm.  I assume that if you wanted to listen in to conversations, etc. going on around the comm, you would need to Spoof Command and turn video chat on, correct?

That or Control Device. In this scenario, I think both would work. Spoof Command is supposed to trick a device that the owner told it to do something, normally requiring a MARK on the owner's persona. I think if the device in question is already the persona, it would work. Part of the problem of doing that whole "when a persona forms it absorbs the device it is formed on" rule. It could have been done much better, IMO.

Just a comment on the IC, Wraith would not accept nor really want leadership responsibility. For one, there's a good chance that at least La Sombra and maybe Hopeless have heard of her due to her Bad Reputations quality. Hopeless, in particular, would probably be a little freaked out given the cause of her Bad Reputation and his last run. While I've had her doing a bunch, it's basically her specialty. On the OOC side, I'm also just trying to push the game along. I'm not sure what everyone's expectations were posting wise, but I was thinking something along the lines of at least once a day.
