Athos nods while he snaps a photo of her with his commlink.  "Oh you are hot, take it from me.  Not as pretty as your real self, but close.  OK.  You take Jimmy and maybe even contact the man he recommended to you.  I will go see this runner and find out what he can tell us, then off to the NH.  I will have to drop my mask there to get us signed in and a couple of keys.  Our stuff is supposed to be delivered at 1700, so you might want to be there to get yours.  We can talk about what we found then and get you ready to do this ritual thing with Strawberry.  I might even see what I can find out about this Digital Security Solutions.  My thought is that someone got to them and used them to set up the explosion."

The two walk a short distance to where they can see cabs cruising.  Athos makes sure that Minnie has enough money to cover several cab rides if necessary and wishes her luck as she steps into a cruising taxi.  He flags another one down and gives the address of the runner.  He also sends a message off to Artie.  Hey Artie.  No hear from.  Are you alright?  I know that you are good enough to not be caught in that explosion so get back to me.  Two things, if you can manage: first, Yulia is off to Gino's to see Jimmy.  She has been masked so look for a girl that matches the attached photo.  She should be OK, but I would not mind a set of eyes on her just in case.  Second, see if you can find out anything about a company called Digital Security Solutions.  Be careful, because I think they might have been involved in setting up the explosives at the warehouse.  Digging into them may lead us to who hired them to do the "special" remodeling.<<

After that he sits back and does a look up of the DSS company on the trix to see what sort of public information is available.

Arriving at the address he gave the cabbie, Athos pays the fare and gets out.  He looks around to get a feel for the neighborhood then goes to where this Kynos is supposed to be living.  Knocking at the door elicits no response, frustrating Athos a bit.  *Damned runners.  Why can't they be at home when you need them?*  Athos enters a note into his 'link and uses the print function to get a hard copy.  The message is simple; "My name is Athos.  I would like to talk to you about a job.  Contact me at the comm code below if you are interested.  200 just for listening."  Satisfied, he slips the note under the door and leaves.

@Kynos at around 17:30 you are let go finally. It's been a crazy day and the darn day. Once you try to relax you hear a conversation between an orc enforcer to someone else about Venom. Apparently he has some bounty on someone 2500 nuyen. When you are allowed out you see that the HQ is almost empty.

@Minnie - While you do attract attention as a young teenager, it is not the same kind of attention as you are used to and a lot less. It actually feels a bit odd to travel with a mask, you blend in. That's an unusual sensation. You reach Gino's at around 13:00.

@Athos as you browse DSS it seems to be a very small company, it has 25 employees and is funded by private capital. Surprisingly enough, despite it's small size, it has the most advanced technology for several physical security systems.  Another thing that catches your attention is that it was founded by 3 brilliant researchers and engineers that worked in Israeli defensive industries (IDI) for over 20 years prior to establishing DSS. IDI is nowadays part of Ares Marco technology. It surprises you that people of their caliber were just allowed to quit their jobs and open an independent business.   People like them are usually 'extracted' just to change jobs.  The company operates from Tel Aviv, Israel but it ships and install products world wide.

Among their products are both passive and active security system. The active versions are currently illegal for public use as they automatically kill burglars. They are only available for AA+ corps and government agencies.

Kynos grinned when he heard about the bounty. Excellent. That would make the next part easier - and he had planned to leave his appartment anyway. To easy for the cops to get a search warrant. And he really hated to lose his toys. He was still flush enough to pay for a bolthole.

He almost missed the small card on the floor while he removed everything of his personal gear as well as a choise assortment of clothes. He always left about half when he left as well as the contents of the fridge. That made it harder for anyone to recognize if he had left for good.
All in all his belongings filled only two bags. Only now he took the time to read the message.
'Sure Buddy - you found my place but don't know my number - have me followed, have you?'

While he left he called his fixer: <<Ryan, it's Kynos. I'm taking the bolthole for a month. Find payment attached. I'm going dark for a while - only prepaids - you've got the list. Expect a call from DemoX about a bounty on a guy called Venom. Take the details - I'll be in touch. Love Kynos>>

After stocking up on a bunch of prepaid phones, Kynos deactivated the wireless function of his commlink and other gear and made his way to a small fenced area - taking care not to be followed. Inside a freight container a camp bed, a chemical toilet and a few other necessities waited for him. After stashing his gear he got back into the streets and activated the first of his new burner phones.

Time to see what this Athos had to say:
<<I got your message. This connection will exist for the next hour so you better get to the point. What do you want?>>

Athos proceeds to the NH by a second cab.  On arrival, he enters the lobby and goes to the nearest restroom.  In goes the pretty Ork and out comes the ugly Troll.  Athos makes his way to the front desk and registers as Frank Rozetti and Gwen Stevens, taking the access codes for the rooms.  Going up to his room he enters and does a quick look around before relaxing.  The room was arranged for by the Yaks and he almost expects that there are mics or cameras hidden somewhere, but he is not enough of a tech to find any but the most obvious.  He goes to the bathroom and reads the water card, very happy to see that there is a large hot water ration.  Stripping, he steps into the shower and washes off the grime and detritus from the explosion.  Once back in the bedroom, he calls down to the concierge to see if there is a clothes cleaning service available and almost yells in glee when told that of course there is.  He arranges for his suit to be picked up and cleaned this afternoon.

Athos tips the young man who comes by for the suit, telling him that there is more for both him and the laundry service if it gets back by 1600.  Afterwards he just lies on the bed and revels in the difference between here and what he experienced last night.  It is not his bed at home, but since there is a good chance that place is no longer his, he is happy with what he has.

Kynos looked at the burner phone. He had almost finished his large coke and only some crumps hinted at the double sized portion of curried rice he had downed.
The hour was almost up and the burner phone would find it's way into the trash shortly afterwards, but still there was no reply.
'Seems like this Athos guy isn't down for business after all.'

Athos Sleeps a bit then rises to be ready when the boy returns with the suit.  As promised, he give the lad a very good tip.  "Now you see this is shared with whoever cleaned the suit.  I will be checking to make sure that you have.  I may have need of you later as well, so when do you go off?  Midnight?  Good.  Thank you for the service."  Athos takes the suit and puts it on, sitting back to wait.  And he is waiting for several people to contact him:  Artie with a progress report, Kynos with an answer to his note, Minnie with word from Jimmy, and or course the Yak contact with the stuff he had ordered.

The Yaks were prompt.  The delivery was checked and double checked and Athos presented a credstick and transferred the balance owed.  Easy come, easy go.  He does stop to wonder what he will have to do to repay these sums he is spending, but he will worry about that later.  His comm chirps at about 1800 and he sees that Kynos has called.  He picks up the comm and reads the text, sending one back.  >>Kynos.  Athos here.  Can we meet in person?  I will pay the 200 at that time.  The topic of conversation is the warehouse you were at last night.  Tell me where you want to meet, but try to pick a place without a Mafia connection.<<

Kynos frowned. Where did that guy learn his street name? This wouldn't do. Not after Venom had set a bounty on his head. Time to make an example out of somebody.
<<You really got nerves. Meet me up on the old Vigor shipyard. I'll wait for you on top of the old crane. You have 30 minutes.>>

Kynos left the small Indian restaurant and made his way over towards the old wharf. The fence had more holes than a really old swiss cheese and beside some BTL junkies and a whole lot of devil rats no-one came here at this hour. Rust was everywhere and everyone who entered was well advised to have their tetanus shots refreshed.

It took him only a minute to find his stash and get into his gear. The old crane stood silent - it would be interesting to see how long that would continue to be the case...

Athos grins at the message.  Yes he has nerves.  Changing into his Big Game clothing, he holsters the huge hand gun and checks his load out mix of APDS and Stick-N-Shock.  He stashes the rest of the gear after taking his IDs and leaves the room.  Downstairs he finds a cab that will take him close to the old shipyard.  After paying off the driver, he walks to the fence, looking for a hole that is large enough for a Troll to go through without ripping his clothes.  As he closes in on the crane, he spins up the Smartgun and link to his pistol.

Athos is not sure of the motive of the runner he is meeting, so stays alert to the possibility of an ambush.  He scans the area for any thermographic images as he ambles to the crane.  Once at the base he looks up and is glad that any fear of heights was washed out of him long ago and starts to climb.  he expects that whoever the unknown runner is has already got him in some sort of weapon sights and will probably stop him well before he gets to the top.  Athos hopes that he gives him time to explain why he is here.

Athos finds - as he expected - no-one up there. Only a small burner phone awaits him, ringing as soon as he made the last step into the gently shaking crane control.
When he takes the call, Kynos answered:
"Mr. Athos may I presume? Your default state of being is death by being shot, falling down from a great height and being perforated by a high explosive grenade. All that stands between this fate and your continued existence is my curiosity. I'll ask you a few questions that you will hopefully answer.
And be careful with your answers big guy, lies bore me almost as much as threats to my life.

Now: How did you find me, who sent you and why should I refrain from killing you?"

Kynos spoke softly but clearly while he watched the silhouette of the troll upon the crane from the cover of a chimney on the roof of the old wharf building.

Athos's laugh booms out over the empty space high above the wharf.  From his vantage point on top of the old crane, he can see for miles.  Part of him see this and realizes how beautiful the sight is.  The rest of him is concentrating on how to deal with the runner and avoid becoming a spot on the pavement far below his shaky perch.  He carefully considers his answer.  >>Yes, you do presume  correctly, although no one really calls me Mr. Athos.  To friends and enemies alike it is just Athos, unless you want to get into all the names people give me that are usually not repeatable in the company of women.  And, to be honest, the only one making any threats against the life of another is......well, you.  I am willing to pay well for information.  However, you do appear to have the advantage right now so I will start off, but perhaps we can trade questions.  You asked three, but I am afraid that I can only really answer one and a half.  How I found you is that you were tracked by a mage I know, but how he did it is a complete mystery to me.  I prefer to keep my source safe from retribution so will politely decline to answer the second question.  Your third question is easier.  You should not kill me because I may become your next employer.  Not only am I willing to pay for information, but I could use the help of someone who is able to get into the vicinity of a well guarded Yak warehouse and make it out alive.  Now my turn, but I only have one question.  If you choose not to answer it, you may as well pull the trigger and see if you are luckier than the guy who tried to blow me up in that warehouse.  However, I would not place too much of your hard-earned money on your chances as I have proved hardier than I look on a number of occasions.  So here it is.  What is your name or street handle or whatever else you want me to call you.  I really dislike not at least having the name of the man who is threatening me.  Your turn.<<

"You can call me Kynos.
You say you were in a warehouse that blew up? Funny. What were you doing, shifting rocket launchers to the streets? If I get this right someone followed me home and since I didn't find a bomb waiting for me I presume you don't work for Venom?

Business is business - what is your interest in this whole situation?"

Kynos was intrigued - this whole talk had become a whole lot more interesting than he had anticipated.

Seattle is so dreary during the winter.

Minnie’s mind wandered as she watched the sprawl pass by the window of the taxi taking her back to Gino’s.

Has it really been only a day?

The past twenty four hours had by far been the busiest and most exciting if perhaps not quite the most terrifying of her twenty years.  She’d discovered that a boy she might actually come to like might like her back and she’d witnessed just how amazing that boy could be in his own element.  She’d learned the man who had done the most to shape her over the past decade had feet of clay and was now trapped in a cell…assuming something hadn’t changed when Dona Valentine vanished from view.  And oh what she’d learned about that frightening woman.  Things she would never repeat and barely understood.  Still, Minnie seemed to come out of their interaction with the grand woman’s respect if not affection.  Although what that might mean now that they all were persona non grata Minnie hadn’t a clue.

Then she’d saved her and Athos’ life and put her dear Nagisa’s in danger.  By itself, breaking out of that building would have been the most changing single event in her young life.  But things didn’t stop there.

Strawberry.

The compelling woman’s image came to mind.  Her heart…and many other things…warmed as she mused about the mysterious redhead.  Strawberry was what Minnie wanted to be when she grew up.  Confident and self-assured.    A commanding presence that compelled respect even of Yakuza and Mafia bosses.  But gentle and kind, ruling not through force but through persuasion.  If she didn’t have other responsibilities, Minnie could imagine no better existence than as Strawberry’s disciple.  There was so much she imagined she could learn from the more experienced elf.  So many things she wanted to master.

But, alas, she did have other responsibilities.  And those responsibilities were calling loudly as the little taxi swung to the curb just outside Gino’s.  Minnie paid the driver, tipping him not only with UCAS dollars but also a warm smile, and turned to face the familiar eatery.  It was right about one O’clock in the afternoon and the lunch rush was only beginning to subside.  More patrons were leaving than were entering the old place as mostly sararimen and low-level corporate execs made their way back to whatever drudgery defined their daily existence.  Minnie slipped in and took possession of a recently vacated table for two.

One of the hostesses came by to clear the table, making the previous patron’s tip quickly vanish.  She gave Minnie a skeptical look, suggesting maybe that the young girl didn’t belong here.  Minnie just smiled and slipped the woman a note wrapped in a UCAS five dollar bill.  She’d composed the note before she had left Strawberry’s domain.  “Please give the note to the cute boy at the bar,” she directed the woman with a quick glance at Jimmy across the room.  “The delivery fee is yours.”

The woman’s skeptical look shifted into ambivalence as she pocketed the cash and moved on to a few other tables before ending up at the bar.  Minnie watched as Jimmy gave the woman a quizzical look as the note was delivered, then looked across the room at Minnie.  Minnie just smiled and tried to give her best flirty look.  Jimmy’s expressive brow furrowed in clear confusion and his lips formed a slight scowl as he opened the note and read the contents.  To the boy’s credit, his expression didn’t betray the recognition.  His face just settled into a neutral expression.  He looked up at Minnie just a moment and simply nodded before returning to his work.

Part one of the mission accomplished, Minnie hopped back out of her seat and walked calmly back out the front door of the restaurant.  Next stop, the old park two blocks away with a water feature that actually still worked.  In the late December drizzle, she was confident it would be bereft of people.  A perfect place to have a private conversation when Jimmy’s shift was up in another hour.

Athos chuckles.  >>Believe it or not I was buying the warehouse.  All of the action was already over and the seller somehow forgot to mention that you had been there.  He was giving me a tour when we noticed the explosives and were lucky to find some weak boards to break through to get out.  Right before the explosion.  It is a bit suspicious and I am quite interested in find out who wants me dead enough to set this up.  Can we finish this face to face or must we continue this?<<
