Eh, while it is a responsibility, locking a gun in a safe (with ammo not at hand) pretty much obviates home defense, unless you just intend to try and scare threats with an empty weapon?* Perfectly fine with sport and hunting weapons, not so much with defensive ones.
I have guns with ammunition in my home (not loaded), at 'strategic' positions in case something is wrong. That said, there's no children, they're not visible, and there's a reason they are where they are. If children come over, I move them to a safe or a room the children won't be in. I was raised and taught about guns by a trained firearms instructor since I was seven (I was told not to touch them beforehand). Treat-Never-Keep-Keep, the responsibilities implicit in owning a firearm, etc. I know a lot of children weren't raised like that, and parents have their own view on firearms, so I relocate them out of respect and safety.
Some people think having guns for defense is weird, or wrong, or paranoid. Given the circumstances of my life, it's common sense here.
*That's idiotic, by the way.
