Not gonna beat around the bush... here's the situation:

You're returning from some trivial activity (bought pizza for the team?). Next to you is the 14 year old Otaku/Technomancer of the team.
As she opens the team Van's door, an Orc (who could well be twice her size, given the age difference) jumps out of the Van and whips out two heavy pistols which he promptly lifts at her. [Edit:] And he doesn't look to be the talkative type.

What would you(r character) do?

Edit: My character used a quick nerve strike to incapacitate the Orc, and THEN started asking questions... Do you think that was too much given the information available to you at this time?

Draw a gun on the Orc.
Then, depending on how much he values his own life and what (if) he has to say, maybe get a replacement TechGuy and or an orc-sized bodybag or eat Pizza with the team..

I modified the original post a bit.  Might have been a bit TOO stingy with the information.

Would still do basically the same, make it absolutely clear to the orc that if he tries something funny, he is dead.
Depending on the char, the Orc might also already be dead since he got a Savalette APDS Burst to his head.

Character 1:
Edge to go first and/or to not be surprised
Fire a DMSO/Narcojet capsule round from his holdout cyberpistol.
Simple Action to move into the ork, putting him in melee.  This character can't fight an ork toe-to-toe, but he'll declare Full Defense when attacked and the ork has to decide between shooting with the in melee penalty or switching targets to my character.  Either way, the drug kicks in at the end of the CT.

Character 2:
(Wonder why the gun wasn't pulled on the giant ork)
Edge to go first and/or not be surprised.
Grapple.
Squeeze.
Repeat.

Start talking, trying to buy the time for the technomancer to brick his guns, if possible.  Possibly use negotiate or intimidate to defuse the situation.

MysAd face: apply Commanding Voice or overcast Stunbolt.

Sam: Edged spray of SnS to the face, courtesy of my Ingram. Hey, if he goes into Overflow, I regain the Edge and everything!  ;D

Confident both of these characters will get initiative before the ork.

Quickdraw Defiance Ex Shocker and stun that fragger.
Don't draw a weapon if you don't want to be shot yourself.

Those hyped up reflexes making you jittery?  It is pretty easy to have  a ten round (thirty second) conversation :)

I was under the impression that talking was out--if it's on the table, then Character #1 would do the draw/talk thing as well.

The TM should be focusing on the van, not the gun.  It's a much bigger potential threat.

Mind that this is all in SR4 mechanics as this is where they are in my own writings.

There was a time when the character in question would have been the one that technomancer, who would have been the one to reveal the pair of Stick-N-Shock loaded holdouts in hidden arms slides up both sleeves, showing the willingness to follow one of Murphy's laws:  "When in doubt, empty your magazine."  If there's more to deal with after that, the Ruger Super Warhawk with Ex-Explosive loads at his hip.

As of now it would be a speed test to see if he could get his similarly equipped pair of modified Ares Redlines out to shoot before his girlfriend decides to either slap said ork with a stunbolt or torch said ork with a flamethrower spell.  Besides the change in artillery the only other change is that he's no longer a technomancer.  Still wouldn't change his base reaction to said surly ork.  If there's more after that he's got an APDS loaded Predator IV at the hip and she's as good a conjurer as she is a spellslinger.

Sadly I won't answer for them in SR5 terminology, as it would spoil my plans for them, though in the very least it could still be the same speed test to see if he can shoot before she incinerates said ork in this scenario.

Now what if I told you that I, as a player, knew that was no Orc, but our team's mage, with an illusion, pulling a stupid prank on us?

Would you amend your character's reaction?
Would you consider my nervestrike 'excessive'?

Not at all.

That's not a prank, especially not if you pull it on people that are trained to use lethal force.

"Its just a prank, bro!" is a retarded non-excuse. The nervstrike is absolutely not excessive.
The player-knowledge would probably have kept me from APDS'ing him, to preserve the peace at the game-table, but a full load of Gel-Rounds would still have been a valid answer. Mage would have got a stern warning after trying this the first time and probably a (SnS) bullet to the head if he tries it a second time.

My character doesn't carry APDS casually precisely because of situations like this.  On the job, sure, but not going around the corner for a pizza.  Getting my character to do something that will likely cause his SIN/licenses to get checked is not a prank.  They're decent, but nothing to foolproof.  We'd have a long talk about professionalism after all of this.

Character 2 (the ork) would probably break his jaw.  He's more the direct type.
